A few questions about weapons/builds from someone who hasn't played since beta

I have been trying to look up information on builds/meta/endgame and 95% of the information I see is almost a year old so I figured that I would ask everyone here

  1. Is sword/shield the only real tanking weapon? I see taunts on several other weapons and very old posts claim that anything can tank. For example, the Ice Gauntlet has set and forget moves like the Pylon and Storm, along with passives that seem designed for tanking. War hammer is similar as well. Can someone pick their favorite weapon and slap a carnelian gem in it and tank? or will you just be lol kicked after the monsters kill your party while ignoring you?

  2. The videos from the New World YouTube channel that were hyping up the release mentioned the damage conversion gems which let you play however you wanted, or I believe the video said something close to that, anyways are these viable or just a trap for new players? Can someone run something like a fire staff and a hatchet (using a gem so it scales with Int) and be viable or would they just essentially be a fire staff and a dead slot?

  3. How strict is the endgame with meta builds? When a party is recruiting 2 dps and a healer is it assumed that the healer is life staff/void gauntlet and the dps are war hammer/great axe (for example) or don’t people really care as long as you aren’t purposely being bad?

  4. Are weapons that scale with 2 attributes not as good as the single attribute ones? two guys have 300 strength, one is using hatchet and blunderbuss and the other is using war hammer and great axe. Are they neck and neck with each other dps wise?

  5. Are territory wars still a popularity contest? If so, what is the best way to work towards getting into one? Constantly having pvp flagged during daily activities? being active in chat? Having a cool/edgy name?

Thanks for looking through the wall of text and I appreciate any and all responses!

  1. Lots of weapons are used as off-weapons for tanking. Most of the time you need a taunt, but you can get away with hate on the weapon depending on context.

I often face tank with a hatchet, like with the Siren arena.

Any boss with a knockdown mechanic basically needs a tank with a shield to hold it in place so the DPS has something to attack. Sometimes you can burst the boss stagger bar so the tank (or DPS with agro) doesn’t need a shield (like with brutes that spawn with Thorpe in Depths).

Any build can tank.
(laugh ) Just ask healers how they can always get aggro from the mobs while everyone else is ignored
Tank is to migrate/absorb damage/grab attention of the mobs so others can damage/kill them faster.
How well you do it, the damage you absorb from full attention of mobs /boss is up to you and your build/gear/play.

  1. You can tank with a lot of weapons and I have seen a lot of different things but in general shield block is superior over the other choices so one of your 2 weapons will probably be Schild and sword.

2.I think this is a miscommunication. Yes you can convert your damage to convert a certain % of your damage to said magic damage. But it doesn’t change with what your weapon scales. If hatchet scaled with STR and DEX it will never scale with INT.

  1. As long as you don’t come across elitist asshole you are good with whatever you pick up as long as you do your part. The current pve scene isn’t so demanding although it will obviously be easier
Clears when running for said dungeon a meta weapon ( fire damage or slash for garden or thrust damage for strmwind

  2. That’s hard to tell you would need to look at the scaling factors of the weapons but from my feel no it’s not that terrible in terms of their difference especially not the INT and STR weapons

  3. Cool edgy name, funny personality, 6foot tall and gigachad looks. Or be biological girl
Outside of that if you join a company that owns a territory the possibility of joining war is high when you are somewhat decent or are willing to play some meta builds or can play different builds like bruiset or healer or mage

Hope you enjoy my wall of text as much as I enjoyed your /smirk/ xD

  1. its the best so yeah pretty much

  2. not really the gems are only half the damage so it would just be more worth it to use weapons that scale together

  3. in wars its pretty strict but outside of that you can use just about anything

4.kind of not completely sure on the scaling think its 90% for main and 60% for secondary and then for single its just 100% but there are diminishing return for both. but yeah you can use hatchet and bb if you want to and just do single stat hatchet/GA is somewhat popular.

  1. be good at pvp and get your name out there.
