I play all the time with 40% thrust dmg reduction and still any SPEAR, BOW, RAPIER etc. can kill me in 3 seconds if I dont have stamina or get CC.
Why FS can`t even make any dmg if any other weapon can???
Basically everyone does if they run out of stamina. That’s a big part of combat, if you can run someone out of stamina you basically win.
The notable exceptions are rapier and lifestaff, both of which players complain about the most (for good reason).
It’s also why I paired BB with FS.

Fire Staff is there to do all the damage while they try to run.
It’s not hard but it does take some practice.
Yes I know. BB is good paire with FS or IG.
I use it too quite often and will be using more probably.
Problem is FS as main dmg weapon (for example paired with IG). Then You have maybe half dmg of other weapons. That is why I`m talking about mages. BB user is no mage but gunner ;p
Yes please keep BB pairing out of the discussion. It scales off INT only thing that even allows it to be mentioned. That is not mage or mage play style. That is akin to calling the old GA/IG a mage.
So I will add that mage clunky play style is due to walk animation after auto. Strange way to balance any weapon and even can be called more as a method to limit mage. At this point where the AGS is in its armor balancing attempts with the stagger on hit, the walk animation should be sped up or even removed.
Furthermore, abilities that require mage to be in melee like incinerate, would be nice if they allowed fortified to apply like VG to allow the player to disengage. This only allows the mage to not explode in 2 hits and gives a healer time to heal or even player to pot. If your CC after incinerating you are incinerated.
Lastly, as much as I hate flamethrowers it is probably the best 3 skill now. If you build your armor towards that play style it can be effective. Counter argument is that people play a mage to not be in the chaos of melee’s.
The class is suffering an identity crisis in my assessment. Which is causing players who play mage for different purposes being confused by the direction it’s heading. This confusion can be seen in the forum in many of these post.
A stagger at least to the pillar of fire would be nice since its a pretty difficult ability to land

That is just a clear case of AGS saying “take the hint”.

For those attempting to say, “I bought a mage set and jumped into arena and dominated!”, please understand your appearing like a court jester dancing around and making jokes. Determining the game play state for all mages based off your impotent arena matches is high class comedy. Arena can vary from having absolutely new players with no experience on the opposing team, or a competent team with a pocket healer. I’ve known plenty of times myself and others have queued for arena just for the free gypsum and not caring about playing. A good team would recognize you’re the mage and then just use their many movement abilities to easily stick onto you and put you in the dirt with ease.

BB primary stat is strength guys and even scales better with melee weapons as they all have gap closers , stuns , rends , incaps. , and more!

Based on what i heard on dev video it will be nerfed because 3 flamethrowers against 1 guy with sword and shield is OP then they will nerf it all that in arena pvp and i wonder what the other 2 team mates were doing… probably sightseeing or something.

@iGurz LMAO exactly , their mindset for combat balancing just shows how lost and misguided they are. That melee fan boy on the AGS developer team is long overdue for a butt kicking because just look how insane their toolkits are and the crazy perks in their talent trees. Meanwhile, mages talent tree nodes are the most pathetic dead perks I could ever read. They think flamethrower does damage lmao, clearly shows they don’t even play their own game.
Fighting any melee player with a flamethrower → you would realize if they are using trenchant recovery (gain 40% health on melee heavy swing dmg) or have any type of heals that the flamethrower will do negative damage. Meaning they can heal more than you can even damage them. Melee weapon swings hitting 3k to 7k damage and then healing for 40% of that. Then you compare that to the flame thrower which is doing 300-500dmg per tick with 300dmg in fire DoTs. So again… blatant proof the developers at AGS are melee favoring zombies.

It’s delusional to think flamethrower is bad now after the patch. It literally got a massive buff now that attunement and the new runeglass gems proc on it. Flamethrower is legit busted. Thinking anything different probably explains why you are never in the top 20 in wars and opr. Sadge.
Again the player who won the 1v1 cross server tournament was a mage. Think a little. Sure yes firestaff needs some qol fixes but it’s not weak by any means.
Except if you use attunement/runeglass then empowering meteor doesn’t work after the first hit, meaning these are useless in a war because you want to bolster your fireball burst as well. having +20% dmg on every tick (.5s) of FT is stronger than attune/runeglass hitting every 1s.
If you want to play to pad, go for it.I don’t play to pad, I play to kill. Farm healers and squishies. My last war, we had another mage who was first just shy of 3 million damage running aoe stat pad build. 7 kills and like 300+assits. I did 2 million damage with fire/ice in a kill group getting over 40 kill and 240 assits, most of the time I was solo just slaying. Next guy in the lobby had 25 kill on the other team. It wasn’t even a farm fest. They got into fort and almost took it. I am not even that good compared to the great mages. Mages better than me just slay. But I think you guys are crazy firestaff and ice gauntlet need buffs in terms of dps. There are other areas mage is weak and there is a legitimate argument. Like right now tomb is basically useless. Bugged. The new dodge slow screwed over mages hardcore. We have no way to apply this new slow to a melee but they can just keep us slowed when dodging endlessly. Dumb
my point was that losing the 20% meteor empower buff is a net loss in flamethrower damage compared to attune+runeglass. Especially since you can get the meteor bonus +vic/keenly emp for the trade.
It was a reasonable change. They did it to all perks that provide empower so it’s not targeted specifically at firestaff. Plus it makes meteor shower more desirable on the weapon. Besides I don’t think shower goes well with flamethrower, they are counter intuitive imo. Flamethrower requiring you be up close and constantly moving while MS locks you in place while typically from a distance. and you would need to typically heavy attack consistently to get MS Back off cooldown fast enough to keep all the stacks up indefinitely, but if you pop flamethrower just no Good. I haven’t used meteor shower for months. Consistent still do big damage. Always in the top 10 while being apart of a kill group.
Glad to hear you are finding some success with the changes. I know myself and other mages have been chatting about work arounds. The light armor issue is a big one, the toolkit for FS doesn’t lend itself well to the changes like it does with dex. Are you running burnout or pillar as your third?
Fr, fb and burnout. If I don’t take flamethrowe I run pillar. But pillar is just so weak compared to flamethrower. Unfortunately it’s a disadvantage to not to use flamethrower. Pillar is good just not great and just doesn’t has much pressure as ft.
