Amazon Game Studios is shooting itself in the foot with Territory Wars. For long term game health, they need more participation

There recently was a very big thread about this on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/newworldgame/comments/rppft9/growing_endgame_issue_one_squad_of_50_players_on/) , so i figure i would copy / paste my thoughts and post them here.

There is a major flaw with the territory war system. Imagine you are playing world of warcraft, you hit 60 and look for a guild to raid molten core with. You find a guild, get all your mats, head over to blackrock mountain then…

Sorry you cant enter, only 50 people are allowed to join molten core from either horde or alliance and we want to make sure we clear the dungeon this week

Due to players being able to set their siege time and the need to push influence in order to siege there is rarely more than one territory war happening at any given time, which means the entire faction is condensed down to a 50v50. This often causes company leaders to bring in the most experienced players across the faction to guarantee a chance at victory. There are simply too many players and not enough slots.

This is a poorly designed system. Territory Wars are right now the sole endgame content, and you are gating out the majority of players from playing them due to poor game design.

EvE online, black desert, conquerors blade, guild wars 2. pretty much every other territory control avoids this problem either one of two ways.

  1. Territory wars are open world pvp so anyone can join (EvE online, GW2 (kinda) )
  • or -
  1. the entire server is vulnerable to siege at the same time (Black desert, conquerors blade)

What either one of these options would do is guarantee there are way more available slots for territory war than there are players, increasing participation and allowing more of the player base to experience endgame content.

Let’s pick a random time, say Tuesday at 9 pm. Every Tuesday night every territory gets thrown into conflict and anyone can bid on sieging a zone. Wednesday night at 9 pm every zone would be at war. Companies that own territory would need to defend what they have, and companies that do not own land would have a plethora of choices on what to attack.

You would have WAY more players getting a chance to play your endgame content and would increase participation in the territory war system. The best part is there would be no immediate change needed to the existing influence system. You could still have that in the game, however once a week there would be a server-wide war.

thank you for coming to my ted talk.
