Are any Tanks Having Success in PVP?

After 1k hours on bow and 625 BIS gear im pretty bored. I am looking for a fun secondary to work on, and I thought tank could be cool.

Is anyone having success in PVP with this? Even after the nerfs?

I don’t mind playing something off meta and putting in a little more effort to succeed, but I need something viable.

I am struggling to find a secondary build to play that doesn’t require me to be light armor or an oonga boonga bruiser.

SNS/hammer is cool but it feels like light armor can eat u alive.

Please let me know if you have any tips. Thanks!

Tanks get eaten by everything. They don’t exist for a reason.

Pure CON tank is an entirely famine based gameplay experience. Offers zero damage compared to bruiser counterpart and has equally as long cooldowns.

Even if you land your skills, they don’t deal damage. They also don’t come back any faster than a 300str/200 con bruiser.

300 CON should have built-in cooldown reduction. For more uptime on utility skills.

CON and FOC offers the least amount of combat stats in the game.

SNS - Blunderbuss was before the patch. Don’t know how strong they nerfed the BB tho

PvP Tanks don’t exists in the game unfortunately… anything with more than 200Con is a waist.
Only thing I’ve had success is Vg/Ig heavy but its not your typical Tank.
And you offer less than if you’d go more offensive in Medium.

OPR tanks who body block the entrances can be pretty effective especially when pocketed. :joy:

I run with the tanks at wars, and by themselves, like, a single tank, is a joke, is a healer without a LS, just an HP bag that people just walk around and move on.

If you plan to run tank only, you will get bored fast.

What we found out that the tanks “variety” makes them very annoying for point hold and caps, wars/opr wise. We run premades just to do a quick test in OPR and they have an utility to some extent, not the best, not the worst.

Many people will argue that a Tank is useless at wars, we do agree on that, but calling someone a griever for playing whatever build they find better for their likes, is turning this crap into a toxic cesspool. Have fun, collaborate with the general strategy, win-win. At least that’s my personal take, might not be a constant success but people don’t flip sides or just run the meta because it’s OP.

After all, you still need point pressure and control, no matter how good a light bruiser is, it’s not going to work after the skills are on CC.

Tank with spear for stam recovery.
Tank with oblivion/vg and 200 Int for extra annoyance.
Tank with IG for entomb, general slowness and all that.

But all in all, any build with the primary stat at 300 would do better than a 300Con200whatever your secondary is.

pd: the 300con200int VG tank is annoying as hell with blackguard gauntlet. The 300con200dex spear tank with whirlwind for stamina/leeching and sweep is extra annoying and gets a good survivability.

There are plenty of nice new perks that are yet to be exploited and combined.

We use tanks as openers, which lets the bruisers run a medium/lighter build for extra damage, but the general setup changes from server to server, and latency is a big factor that nobody talks about. Old school heavy 300-200 got rebalanced for good, if people want to deliver consistent damage medium or light are the most constant builds.

Could a 300 Str 200 Con medium SNS warhammer be a decent tank/bruiser hybrid?

Or is sns only good for light armor stunlock builds?

If im wasting my time let me know, I suppose I can just go back to bow.

Man I’m not really the one to answer that, you gotta play whatever likes you and works somehow for the role.

I played tank since day 1 and bow for a few months. Tanks have no business in PVP in this game. Stick with the bow. It’s 10x more fun and rewarding than playing a tank

There is a whole thread with almost 7k views on how bad tanks are in PVP in new world. AGS DOES NOT LIKE TANKS! If you are going to be a tank then be prepared to:

  1. not do a lot of damage
  2. everyone is going to skip you (it’s boring playing tank)
  3. you will die pretty fast even though you are a tank
  4. you will most likely not be slotted in wars (tanks are just not the meta)
  5. desync*** sword attacks and abilities still desync.
  6. lose stamina FAST. I still think blocking with a shield should have it’s own “stamina bar” (it’s the same with throwing hatchet as it uses stamina.) It’s a huge inconvenience especially in a game where having stamina to dodge and iframe is a must.

Heavy armor 300+ str 200 con ss/gaxe is what I run for OPR and arenas and it works great, however it’s not exactly a tank build. It’s more of a hybrid tank dps with decent dmg and survivability, lots of mobility and cc, pulls/slows, gap covers etc.

I’d agree with most others on pure tank… probably sucks for anything but point sitting.

It’s strange to me that people here in general don’t consider that to be a tank.

You’re high hp and heavily armored, so much so that it more than qualifies you to tank any content in the game. Yet that somehow doesn’t qualify you as a tank?

It seems the people here really just mean they want to be better at PvP with a full defensive build but that doesn’t hyperbole as well as “AGS HaTeS tAnKs”.

It’s also my perks… round shield with keen/vicous/keenly empowered, str sword with rogue/empowered leapstrike/refresh move/, gaxe has thwarting strikes and keenly jagged. Skill trees are all about dmg and chasing too.

Honestly, I would go healer

There’s hardly a significant number of “tanking” perks, and most of them can be completely ignored.

Hated? Sturdy? Not required for anything.

I think the bigger problem is that the trinity isn’t trinity enough for some people. Of course, that opens a bigger discussion of how much the trinity should play a role in this game and that is a very, very ugly discussion to have with the MMO community.

People are mad that they can’t effectively kill things by stacking HP like they can in some games. It’s very strange to me, but it highlights the bigger issue that this game’s combat just isn’t skill-based, it’s gear-and-meta-based. Which is basically written in nearly every complaint on the forums regarding combat in twisted wording.

Keenly Fortified and Lifesteal come to mind… refreshing move is neutral I guess… and there’s some tank perks in the new pvp pool… shirking heals/fortified?

Tanks (traditional ones with more Con than str) have no place in PVP in New World. We have been begging to be useful for months, we are ignored. I go brusier in pvp. I dont like it, its boring. And even at 300 Con I die in a few hits from a light wearing dps. I’ll repeat, Tanks have no place inNew WOrld pvp. Go heals.

The buffs and debuffs that S&S offer are good, but the way they are achieved/applied do not make the weapon work in a supportive functionality.

The AoE rend from Whirling Blade is 1) too low and 2) far too small of a radius, if 10% I could see the ability getting a lot more play ([Sundering] Shockwave in comparison has grit, can heal off it, 4m radius, stuns, weakens, can rend, can slow, can exhaust and can pve taunt LUL)

Shield Rush ain’t half bad at what it does, but I think there needs to be a rework of it and Defensive Formation to make the Defender Tree more on par with a Protector/Peeler. Having a similar, laughable radius as Whirling Blade, Defensive Formation is an otherwise selfish fortify buff whether we like to admit that or not. S&S users should be able to sacrifice their shield entirely to offer a much larger defensive field (think Captain America KEK). Shield Bash also offers far too little especially when you consider the perk “Repulsing Shield Bash”.

The weapon might not need a whole lot of AoE CC to compete, but it certainly does need to establish control in order to feel viable outside of PvE scenarios where you block so as not to overwhelm your healer.
