Are pure melee characters basically screwed in PvP?

Hey, I’m still quite new and didn’t experience much pvp, especially since they removed level scaling, but I’ve been thinking how it works. Lets say, hypothetically, that you’re a pure melee character, and not use one of the weapons that has movement speed increasing abilities, how are you supposed to catch up with runners? As far as I see, the only reason is hoping to shoot them with range, but that’s not an option. As far as I’ve seen, everyone has the same baseline movement speed. So, if someone sees you and decides to run, is there simply no way to get the kill unless you’re playing a ranged character? What prevents someone from simply rolling out and running even if they get caught and survive whatever CC you had?
I heard about removed stagger system, which sounds great for me, and I honestly don’t understand why on earth they decided to remove it. It makes sense that if you get caught in melee and hit, it should become harder to just run away, leaving you an option to keep trying to get away or fight back. How else are you supposed to even compete with melee?

Disclamer : I am not the law, or the all seeing god of truth, this is only my opinion based on my experience !

There are usually lots of different scenarios for a pvp fight, in different contexts too, but to keep it short and simple, the short answer is : in open world pvp, as a solo player, yup, absolutely, totally, entirely, you are categorically screwed !

That said, you are NOT screwed in group pvp, or mass pvp.

That’s why, for open world, most players go ranged, and if they aren’t ranged, they use a second weapon for range. Personally, I chose to go full melee because I am “building” myself for group pvp later on, wars and such and I need the healing the lifestaff provides me to reduce downtime in pve.

Generally, in open world, the balance between ranged weapons vs melee is overwhelmingly in favour of ranged weapons.

Pretty much.

I’ve given up on the notion of going pure melee for overworld PvP and moved on to taking up bow.

I can only blow the 6 stagger/knockdown/stun abilities between spear and sword’n shield with a GA-wielding friend hooking and trying to pause escape-- only to have someone run aaaalllllll the way back to sanctuary so many times before I give up on the notion.

I’m not 100% convinced this is necessarily a bad thing though. Different weapons for different purposes and all that, though I do believe it could use a little tuning in its current form.

There are a few options I know of:

  1. The Greataxe: big dash, and the ultimate ability on the reaper tree gives a movement speed buff when looking at a foe.
  2. The Hatchet: Has an ability that gives you a root if you land it from behind. Good for catching runners. Berserk also gives a good movement speed buff.
  3. Sword and Shield or Warhammer: Both have at least two stuns/knockdowns that can keep you’re ranged opponent stuck once you catch them.

From what I’ve heard/seen Greataxe is a must for melee only builds, either pairing it with Hatchet or Warhammer.

Hope this helps,
