As Expected - Inventory and Gear Management is a Major Pain. .

There was a lot of feedback given during Alpha about the headache that is gear management and inventory management. From the pain of going through and sorting out the good from the bad RNG loot, to the pain of finding your mining gearset in storage, to the pain of searching for the piece that you want that you stored with a particular perk, to the pain of moving stuff around constantly to make space for things. . .

So much a pain that for the first time today I was like “should I log in” and the answer was no, hell no. I don’t want to grind watermark for a few hours to get over 300 items, sort through them for 30 minutes, and find that only 2 of which are worth a damn. I don’t want to go grind for mats and have to find my 4 different gearsets to equip, and then equip and unequip them. I don’t want to have to juggle storage space to fit my motes or refining resources from grinding for materials and gear. I don’t want to page through 3 different storage spaces to find the greataxe with that certain perk that my friend needs because I can’t search for the perk by name, like you can on the trading post.

I want to just log on and PLAY a game that isn’t a pain to play, that is just fun an involves playing not managing inventory. So I played other things, and I had fun.

Unfortunately, I’ve been struck by that exact same feeling.

“Do I want to log in today?”

No, because:

  • Inventory Management is Awful
  • I’m tired of moving shit around the entire map for storage space
  • Watermark grinding is beyond tedious
  • My preferred weapon choices aren’t “meta”
  • Cannot consistently nor reliably enjoy the end-game PvE content (Arenas, Expeditions, etc.)
  • Even gathering, which used to be a quasi relaxing time sink, is now overwhelmed by an inordinate amount of real people or bots competing for the more rare materials.
  • The existential dread that I’ve been a player of integrity by not duping or exploiting, and, because of that choice, I’m geared like a 90th percentile player despite possessing the playtime of a 99th percentile player … and that gear differential is significant.

Honestly, I can stomach a lot of the drawbacks of New World with the hope they’ll fix them in time. It’s the feeling of being behind the curve - that is set by dupers and exploiters - and the inventory/storage management that just wears my interest thin.
