This isn’t necessarily true, which for me means that it isn’t true at all. In almost all MMORPGs, and most certainly in New World itself, it isn’t at all obvious exactly what impact different choices make on the overall DPS as an outcome.
Weapons have a primary and secondary stat. Do they have diminishing returns? Are these stats combined or just the highest stat used? How much constitution should players weave into their character? Which abilities provide the best DPS and in which order should they be used?
While on the surface, even if the answer seems obvious, different scenarios can call for different optimal approaches. Max DPS builds are not necessarily the optimal build for instanced PvE encounters. While you might one shot ever mob in the open world, and are able to stop and eat between extremely short open world trash mob encounters, being a glass cannon could be, and in my opinion SHOULD be a recipe for disaster in instanced PvE content. As the old saying goes, a dead player does 0 DPS.
Encounters in many MMORPGs are tuned around the old Tank n’ Spank mechanic where the best choice is always more DPS because if the encounter ends quickly enough you can ignore mechanics. I’ve yet to see the approach New World has taken, but even if their initial foray into PvE content is Tank n’ Spank, I hope as they find their legs as a development team they are able to create better and more interesting content.
…dps meters are exactly for getting better at the game…
It is not a static “good at the game” vs “not good at the game” it is about improving over time.
sorta true, but players will still do that without dps meters, they will just do it with no evidence.
the current situation is mostly because no one has established an accepted meta yet, once they do, things will change.
that said, I have no particular love for dps meters, so I’m fine and probably prefer it doesnt exist. Just pointing out its the people not the tools in this case
If there is combat logging, there will be some kind of dps meter. There’s always a way around things. Anyways. I personally enjoy addons, they make the tedious things bearable. I would love a minimap.
Not having a dps won’t meter won’t save you if you’re bad. I will kick someone who is very obviously being carried. Go tip toe in the tulips on your own time.
Also in games with meters if you had to stare at i the whole time it means you probably were doing it wrong lol.
I’ve come to realize the only people that hate meters, are people that generally are bad at the games they are playing and the meter just pointed it out for everyone to see.
I dont miss any of that stuff from World of Warcraft. I dont really have a problem with dps meters or things like Raider.IO since they are useful add-ons, but over time it all turns into something more elitist and unhealthy.
I am aware how utterly terrible communities get with things like dps meters. Don’t want to support that.
Though I do kind of wish that at the end of an expedition I could see a reference for how much my Dots actually did.
I want to see
Damage: dude did you even attack?
Burn damage: Hell recreated, you God of fire.
…jokes aside DoT contribution is harder to observe than standard.
I see alot of people wanting DPS meter to “check themselves” if they are “performing good” or if “a build is better than another”.
The thing is comparing builds in numbers leads to min maxing and cookie cutter templates. Aha so you want to be a DPS? Ok you need to spec like this and use these talents. Buy Awesome shoes of Doom and Santaclause hatchet or you will not be able to find a group…
You should be able to judge yourself if a build works better than another if you are skilled without having to look at numbers. Go kill some elites and clock if you are anal about it then swap build and do the same… Is it easier, harder, takes longer time? There you go.
To use DPS meters is kind of lazy. Play the game and try different builds and see what works best for you. The only way really your build is underperforming is if you find it very boring to play whatever the reason is be it its just boring mechanic or its boring because everyone kick you out from a group because you decided to be a lifestaff DPS and put all points in STR…
The thing is if you have cookiecutter builds where build 1 is best then 2 then 3… A guy that enjoying playing build 3 can often outperform a guy playing build 1 but not enjoying it even if build 1 is slightly better on paper. With DPS meters and the elite community that usually follow in its tracks the guy playing build 3 will probably be denied groups alot. Like in WOW… Oh Firemage… well err no… Respec to frost… or whatever the FOTM is…
oh lord no, please no DPS meters. Already have folks I have played with going full retard and nuking while tank was still running in. They have been an issue in any game that has it. Then we have those “group looking for a xxxx DPS.”
I do like your idea with a dps reporting trainingdummy atleast over a dungeon dps meter but on the other hand that will also lead to FOTM templates and minmaxing that will eventally force all players into the best templates… Healers shall spec like this and use these items and dps shall be this or that…
In fact it was a way to praise high performers or wow people in pugs. It was alot of fun actually.
The only people this affected was people clearly not helping a raid that should be kicked anyways because they can’t do mechanics or are causing 20 people to fail a tight dps check because they do less damage than tanks.
Again the only people that thought meters were toxic were people getting kicked for 2k dps when everyone else were doing more than double that. If you suck you suck and have no place in higher tier content where you are quite literally wasting 19 other peoples time because you can’t acknowledge you are actually holding everyone back.
Nonsense. I’ve seen people get kicked from old dungeons because their dps wasn’t up to the current dps even though their gear and dps was the relevant gear and dps for when that dungeon came out.
This is the very reason why FFXIV will never implement or allow dps calculators officially. They turn a blind eye to people using ACT, but if you mention it at all or use it to create a “baseline” for content where the dps required is well above what is necessary (which is what happens in WoW) your account gets suspended, and rightfully so.
DPS meters are a great tool for yourself, but they are consistently used to bully players.
Anyone and everyone raiding in FFXIV knows DPS meters are standard lol.
Also what you just said isn’t the norm. As someone thats played for years… the only time I see dps brought up is when dps is too low overall and the group fails. Then people start getting their dps looked at.
But there are many times when I have brought a friend into a current raid N/H as a carry and as long as bosses are dieing no one says a word.
I have cleared all the hardest content in FFXIV. I was the only one in my static running ACT and most of the time I never looked at it. DPS meters are not standard nor necessary in XIV.
And what I said is the norm. I played WoW for years and I saw that shit happen all the time. Yoshi P was also an avid WoW player and clearly his experience was similar and he outright states in their recent community stream that they will never add or allow meters because it straight up leads to bullying, especially in pug groups.
Any person clearing high content and who actually has a shred of understanding will tell you that dps meters do much more then measure dps. People who bully people cause “Her Der your dps isnt high enough.” without any context to that number will bully people in some other way regardless and this happens most often at lower levels of play, Any high end guild that isnt shit I know isnt kicking you instantly because your damage was low on a single pull. They had to invest time into recruiting you, getting you in the raid, and actually doing shit, so after 20-50 pulls and you still dying to the same shit, or pulling complete crap dps even though you hadnt gotten any mechanics that would cripple your performance, or using your cooldowns where you shouldnt to try and be that epeen fucking idiot who thinks numbers are all that matter rather then the kill on a progression boss. Being high on the meters dosent matter. But knowing how good your doing as a whole is if your a performance minded player and want to play with other like minded people.
While dps meters are banned in FF14 by all the twitch streams, an entire web site dedicated to it with hundreds of thousands of parses on it, it seems like people who want these features will find a way. Sure they may be banned if they chat about it in game, but thats what discord and third party chat is for.
