Giving a mob 10 or 100x more HP does not make the content better in any way.
LAZY!

Even if the mob had 10 hp the combat feels bland. I hit the enemy but the enemy hits me back like nothing happened. It feels like we’re both just mashing buttons to see who dies first lol.
The spear doesn’t do this against most enemies. It’s really satisfying if you like combat that rewards finding openings and avoiding punishment.
It is very unfortunate they removed the stagger system from this game.
Things like grit and heavy armor flat out encourage just trading with enemies.
It is all so brain dead. No amount of scaling in the world is going to make that combat feel engaging.
I wish more of the weapons felt like the spear and bow. I wish the stagger system was still in the game to promote rewarding not getting hit and taking advantage of openings.
and why does every mob seem to have the same knockback and stagger type skills? I love being pushed around the map my lvl 6 mobs. Once they block you into a wall it is like they go into frenzy mode too and attack 3x as fast.
Damn, stagger sounds like a mechanic that would definitely add some much needed depth to the combat. Why would they remove it?
Enough players complained about it in the alpha to have it removed, or maybe it was the beta. I dunno, at some point Asmongold got dumpstered by a guy with a hatchet on stream and the next time the game was available the entire system had been removed. (Not saying Asmongold is the reason why, it’s just how I remember the timeline. He actually didn’t say much about it when it happened.)
I ran spear for a long time because it most closely resembled stagger. Shame I had to use a weapon to mimic a system the game had from the get go.
Damn but wouldn’t it be more practical to nerf a single weapon instead of completely removing a core mechanic of combat?
Isn’t it obvious? Or am I crazy?
Bro half the decisions these developers make, make no sense to me and seem like over reactions to smaller problems. They try to communicate, but they are absolutely horrible at getting anything meaningful across - so I could not tell you what was going on with the stagger system that caused it’s removal.
The combat in this game was way more complex in the closed versions of the game early on than what it is now. Maybe they just weren’t confident they could keep a playerbase with an MMO grindfest that had mechanically complex combat. They seem to not have confidence in a lot of areas of their game, changing things as often as they do.
Mmm makes sense. I agree they seem to have little confidence in what they’re doing. It feels like they just can’t make up their minds
they look down on their playerbase.
this is what is happening. It is very obvious in just what happens on the forums. It is telling of what the culture is.
Just got done reading this article, sheds a lot of light on things. Yikes.
Amazon hired celebrated developers like Kim Swift, designer of the puzzle game Portal, and Clint Hocking, director of the shooter Far Cry 2. It also formed two more studios in California. The splashy hires kept coming, including Madden guru Richard Hilleman and online gaming pioneer John Smedley. Today, only Smedley remains. All declined to comment.
When the only industry veteran with a track record of working on successful titles that opts to stick with your company is the one that has been black listed from the industry.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I just wikipedia him.
he’s the one that ruined swg.
WWWWWWWWWTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFF
this game is dead to me. DEAD!!!
He isn’t on the team that works on New World, he is on the Lost Ark team. (Cancelled my pre order when I found out.)
As far as I know his son works on New World’s team but I do not know what he does and haven’t verified that 100% myself because I really don’t care enough to.
Both branches are stationed in Southern California, though. With some of New World’s team being in Seattle from what I’ve read about the game. Kind of curious how much of an ear Smedley has with the decision makers around New World.
if he’s the general manager, i mean, how can he not be involved?
I actually need to thank the guy personally because I was playing that game very heavily.
Might have ruined my life if they didn’t ruin the game.
lol yeah, true, would love to say it’s impossible for just one person to be the reason a game is fucked - but Smedley would definitely be one of those rare exceptions.
