Blocking is Irrelevant in PvP

Currently, attacking or using an ability locks you into an animation where the game doesn’t let you dodge or block an incoming attack. This makes the game feel like you’re not in control of your character and can’t really use block effectively when fighting another player or even PvE enemies for that matter. Some will argue this gives a risk factor to using abilities or attacks but all it does is make the combat feel like a dps race to who can output the most damage and little ways of outplaying the opponent. What I suggest is let block be able to animation cancel at least light and heavy attacks if not abilities.

The scenario you pose here takes for granted that pvp is always two people left click spamming and therefore implementing block would fix this “dps race”. What you fail to consider is that plenty of good pvpers do not start a fight in kissing range ready to spam left click and dps to death. Most people, even if not good at pvp, try some iteration of a tactic such as throwing a gravity well before charging. Good pvpers know how to punish left click spam.

The fact that left click spam is punishable, which you’ve admitted by acknowledging the inherent risk in animation locking when left click spamming, actually suggests that combat is not a dps race, but a factor of various things; one of which is who can play more precisely and carefully via minimizing time spent in locked animations.

Im not against your suggestion, I havent tried this game in closed beta with stagger so I can not comment. All im saying is that if you want what you want, youre going to have to be more convincing because what youre saying atm is not helping your cause.

It really annoys me too and it’s the same thing with weapon swapping.
I’m used to the fluidity ESO offers. That game has many issues, but blocking dodging and swapping never felt this clunky.

To be fair blocking is pretty garbage unless you have a shield and are in heavy armor.

Normal weapon blocking barely works against one person. With two or more your stamina will break and then you’re dead.
