Bug: Free Look won't engage

****** Please make sure you fill out the following information before submitting a report ******

Don’t forget to check the Known Issues List to see if your issue is currently being worked on by the dev team.
We also have existing workaround for some issues that you can find here:

  • What is your character name in New World: Aymiia Darell
  • What server/world did you experience your issue on: Diranda
  • Describe the issue you are experiencing: Sometimes, holding the ‘Free Look’ button doesn’t allow you to free look while running.
  • Is this a bug or an exploit: Bug
  • (if a bug) How did the issue effect your gameplay: I can’t look behind me while I’m running away from something to see if it has stopped chasing me.
  • (if a bug) Were you able to recover from the issue: It seemed to reset itself after awhile, I didn’t have to log out of the game.
  • (if a bug) Please include a screenshot or video of the issue that you have experienced: n/a
  • What are the steps to reproduce the issue as you experienced: Can’t for sure reproduce it, it seems to happen when I’m auto running and something ‘hits’ me while I’m running, maybe even only if it applies some sort of debuff. I kept trying, even after the debuff went away, and it wouldn’t work. It eventually fixed itself, noticed it was working again when I was running down the road, after I had been in some camped combat for a quest. It’s possible attacking things resets it? I’ll try to do some experimenting if it happens again.

I’m using the default LALT binding for free look.

This happens for me as well. Sometimes it kicks in but I haven’t managed to figure out what causes it to.

Free look (LALT) doesn’t work at all for me when auto running. Mouse movement always changes direction irrespective of what I change that keybind to.

I was able to fix this issue with restoring my keybinds and gameplay settings to default, as it also affected my targeted healing.

I get this bug quite regularly and it puts me at a huge PvP disadvantage. Please consider fixing this bug. Thank you!

Swapping out an equipped weapon for a different one in your inventory seems to fix it for me. Then you can just switch back to your main weapons.

Shift+Tab to bring up the Steam overlay, then closing the overlay fixed it for me.

Interesting, will have to try weapon swap or the steam overlay trick next time it happens. Thanks.

Thanks, that worked right away. I just removed my weapons and re-equipped them.

This worked for me. Thank you. Maybe it’s an issue with the steam overlay? Idk but it worked.

Just to add, it started working for me randomly after I left the settlement and has worked since

Got the same issue

  • What is your character name in New World: Torgul
  • What server/world did you experience your issue on: Naraka
  • Describe the issue you are experiencing: Sometimes, holding the ‘Free Look’ button doesn’t allow you to free look
  • Is this a bug or an exploit: Bug

I got around it by unequipping both weapons and equipping then back.

I always fix it by clicking repair all button. So three workarounds has something in common - pressing tab. Maybe there is some problem?

I can now confirm that just pressing tab fix it for me.

Thanks so much dude, this worked for me!

This is happening to me every time I log in currently. If I unequip and re-equip a weapon it fixes it for the session.

The weapon swap worked for me too, thanks everyone!

Same bug, weapon swap in/out worked for me too. EDIT: This issue, along with Auto Run, is being triggered by a bad Hemp node that won’t harvest. I existed the game 3 times, restarted my PC, back in the game and POOF as soon as I tried to harvest the bad node it broke my Auto-Run and Free Look again. Just FYI for devs. Bad node coords in image: NW bad hemp node breaking Free Look and Auto Run

honestly thought this was going to be a troll, cheers worked like a charm
