Not sure if you mean light tanking with sns is not that hard, which I totally agree — Skylighter gave several good reasons including perma-DS which means maximum fortify always, cc abilities, able to heal yourself, etc.
If you mean light tanking without sns, also totally agree with you, but I was just saying it’s more difficult than using sns
My only issue with Light Tanking is if it becomes so vastly superior to Heavy tanking that people start expecting it and kick you out for playing as Heavy.
So long as it stays this cool thing that few can pull off because they’re absolute mad lads then I’m all for it. It’s cool when players find creative ways to beat the content and have fun doing it at the same time.
Light armor whether it is a tank or dps should result in 1 shots in like M5+. The fact you can run 4 light armors plus a healer, do large pulls, stack, and not die is just plain stupid. It is very imbalanced in both PvE and PvP. Light armor needs a huge nerf in the survivability department
@pointe yep. I got a ban for being too combative unfortunately. I don’t take issue with it TBH. I can understand how being critical of someone is against ToS, but it wasn’t said with any malice. I even praised the forum user for their passion.
You can’t see this because all of my posts were deleted, you also can’t see the numerous likes they got (because I’m not alone in this opinion). And they weren’t flagged, just taken down instantly.
I was critical of a particular forum user who has created 5 topics on light tanking and has a propensity to skew any conversation about tanking into a light tanking discussion when it shouldn’t be.
I really hope I didn’t cause offense, I apologise and hope it was just an overzealous mod that did this.
I am disappointed that this has happened. There is no consistency and it feels like a particular forum user is being overprotected. Criticism is not an attack.
Zero apology from me tbh. Definitely unwarranted in my opinion. What does “too combative” even mean anyway? You can tell that they freehand those remarks.
Anyway I’m sure that I can point to several posts from a certain light armor tank that are equally or more “combative” than anything said by you or I in this thread, but that’s a whole other conversation.
^ the official response was actually for being off topic. Which it was. “Too combative,” was the note I received upon trying to log into my forum account whilst being banned.
I honestly don’t mind the punishment at all.
I’d just like to see this applied at all times, not just when the moderators feel like it.
Most times I see far worse posts than my own just be hidden.
They don’t get deleted, the user doesn’t get insta+banned and they don’t have all their replies from a topic deleted.
Unfair and inconsistent are 2 words that can be used to describe this.
It would be nice to know which moderator responded to my post and open a dialogue with them about this. So that any future occurrences are punished equally.
How did you got banned and still have regular status ? I lost mine while been suspended on a Ukraine / Russia topic earlier this year. I guess your ban was under 24hr ?
I like to say everyone could be a light tank, because I’d like to think I’m just an average player, but the truth is, you really have to be one of the best tanks out there with an expert level of knowledge to be able to pull it off. I’m one of the best, I just don’t like acknowledging that.
I do truly believe anyone can get there with enough practice. I did.
I was light tanking with a rapier before I moved to SnS; I believe the rapier to be the easiest tanking weapon. With SnS, the shield is totally required since I can’t just iframe or stun every incoming attack. From my experience, I suspect they’re both equally difficult and simply have different playstyles.
While you can maintain 100% uptime on 50% Fortify, it requires perfect execution. As a Light SnS tank, I didn’t find as much room for error as I did as a light rapier tank, though both have their own points at which encounters can be difficult or end you.
I don’t run any CC abilities other than slow on final strike and on the shield rush, which is only 4 seconds long (and 100% uptime can’t be maintained on that, but you can come close, though you can maintain 100% uptime on the 10% weaken, since it lasts for like 12 seconds) but it helps with threat gen since SnS tanks deal 20% more damage to slowed mobs (if they’re 200+ str)
I run leeching and that helps, but the majority of self healing comes as a paladin. Most light sns don’t have that added perk.
A lot of the encounters CAN one shot light tanks and light dps. The Genesis Soldier is a prime example. If I don’t dodge or block his slams, it’s instant death, even with 50% fortify.
I don’t know if there’s actually any contention. Keep in the mind the forums are an echo chamber that don’t typically reflect feelings or thoughts of live servers.
I think build diversity is great and don’t really care what people play as long as it’s effective.
What I will say is I only ever hear about light tanks on the forums. I run pug muts for a few hours almost everyday unless I run out and I have never seen a light tank in the real world.
I can count on one hand the number of light tanks, myself included, that can actually clear the content in groups without pulling the group down or stressing people out.
People have taken the one or two of us who can do it effectively and blown it way out of proportion; for reference, people cry that paladin is overpowered, but everyone who has ever tried it has sworn it off as too difficult.
Truth is, light tanking is exclusive to 0.001% or less of the population. A few outliers doesn’t make something overpowered.
So, yeah, I agree that the complaints about light tanks are way overblown.
Most tanks aren’t good enough to regularly run M10s so… there is that too.
Preach Brother…
I’ll again acknowledge the skill with doing it. I just don’t think a game needs such a large disparity in what is possible based on skill alone. It’s cool yes but it is a symptom in my opinion of balance issues within certain mechanics of the game. Based on how few tanks are capable of actually tanking M10 to begin with it’s a pretty big skill gap with your average player.
The forums are like customer service in retail. Everything is generally negativity but, for every customer who does complain there are nine who didn’t bother and just went elsewhere. There are defiantly folks on the forums who make it their mission in life to be an obnoxious karen but generally where there is smoke there is fire when it comes to forums in gaming communities.
I think the disparity on what a role can do is a lot wider in games where they let you make your own class by combining weapons of your own choice like in New World.
This is why I consider New World a Sandbox MMO on rails.
It’s got a lot of the elements of a themepark mmo; vertical progression, instanced dungeons, defined activities for progression.
It has a very-defining element of sandbox, too, though with no predefined classes or roles, but also doesn’t force you to participate in defined activities on a linear path.
I like this hybrid concept, but I think they need to take it further:
Properly balancing the benefits of being in heavy vs medium vs light armor, as opposed to attempting to limit what each armor class is capable of.
I always figured the devs would get around to making it so heavies apply 100% longer duration on stun, root, etc. As they are less mobile, it makes sense that they would be able to take away that benefit from opponents with better efficiency and frequency.
;
Anyway, I have a heavy tank build where I feel like an absolute god, and it’s like an immovable fortress compared to my light build. I run 200-300int, 200-300con, with SnS+VG. VB is out the majority of the time. Sword exclusively for fortify buffs and taunt.
With this build, I’ve face-tanked Cilla up to 25 stacks on m10, because fortify cap in heavy while you’re sitting on lifesteal cap is insanity.
Even medium has some diverse options; I first perfected medium tanking before moving to medium paladin, then finally light paladin. A lot of people discard medium, but it’s possibly the most-diverse armor build, at least for tanking hybrids.
