Same issue - character is gone since the pre-merge server outage last night. i was not sure if just broke mine - so contacted them on chat and filed a trouble ticket. Noticed that when this happens - character box on left spinning with no character - it also locks the client up for me - top right buttons (like to quit) also do not function.
Had the issue last night. Started for me with the previous night’s weekly patch. Assumed it was the login server being taken down for the merge downtime. When servers came back up the same problem. My wife plays too so was able to test my account info on her machine and she was able to connect fine. So I knew it was localized to my computer not my account.
Verified files multiple times … did not fix the problem.
Did a DNS / IP reset / flush… did not fix the problem.
Rebooted several times… did not fix the problem.
Logged in and out of steam multiple times… did not fix the problem.
Found a post similar to this mentioning the AGS folder in the app data and deleted that and was able to immediately get back in. Unfortunatley, it reset ALL my game settings including keybindings, chat settings, everything. But I did manage to get back in and playing after about three hours of trial and error.
I have tried all the fixes pointed out in this thread - with no success. I even fully deleted New World in Steam, then deleted the folders and all local files for New World. Did a fresh installation - and same problem.
Interestingly my New World PTR instance works fine.
This started for me when the server pre-merge outage happened. I was fine and in the game with no issues just prior to that.
My trouble ticket is in - so see if get any help from Amazon that fixes this.
We are looking into this. Seems like deleting app data is working for most but not all. @StingJ make sure you add your New World app data zip to the ticket. It’s what will help us the most. The CS representative can walk you through how to get it if you’re not sure.
I found the following suggested fix posted by customer service in response to someone having this issue in another message thread:

Uninstall the game
Delete these folders :
– C:\Users\USERAME\AppData\Roaming\AGS
– C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\AGS
re-install the game
These steps DID work for me. Now am back to seeing my character. Server is down for server merge at the moment. But the issue with not seeing character seems cleared. Hopefully after server merge all will work again.
Alright, thanks for the update. If it does happen again, please send the zipped app data for NW folder to CS. That will help us with the investigation into what initially caused the error.
I had to use the START menu bottom left to open the “Run” Program. Windows button+R should work… but didnt for me. Really, just open “Run” however you can.
Look up "%AppData%
Click on AGS
Delete the savedata and settings lines.
Restart Computer.
Open game and verify it worked.
