If I was going to add depth to this it would be combo based. ie “light light heavy” is a different result than 1 heavy, 3x lights or 3 heavies. Widening the hotbar so it can ease into hotbar spam so people can “play from the tray” would abandon the fundamental cycle of combat.
Not opposed to some shorter cooldowns though. Also some TTK’s could be lowered as this type of combat can be very exhausting to keep up over extended periods inside a single fight. Grinding in a game with combat like this becomes tiresome much, much quicker compared to ARPG’s or hotbar MMO’s if you have to stay on top of changing circumstances frequently.
this game is honestly so refreshing to play as it is, hopefully they don’t listen to the forums and 1. change the combat or 2. nerf everything to oblivion like ESO did.
There are already combos based around bleed, stun etc.
What we need is more base attacks and counters. Like in Sekiro, when someone attacks with heavy spear attack, jump on spear and counter.
2nd paragraph is mostly subjective to someone’s taste. I am very happy with this combat because of the result/punishment. It needs real skill to win (+low ping). Not just better build and innate skill advantage.
People are not defending the game. We all want an improved game but not at a cost of the fundamental system of the game. I really like the suggestion of chaining but not make the game like what you want 1,2,3,4,5,6 and repeat.
You already have 6 abilities, is that all you do now? No? Weird.
I want to add ONE ability to each weapon, then introduce interesting interactions between those abilities, not just, “hur hur I spam long range slows then shoot bow hur dur.” You’d still have your LMB spam, but you’d have to be smart about how you do it, not just shut off your brain.
But that kind of gameplay doesn’t bring in money these days, so, rest assured, game will never change!
Yeah, one ability that’s up a lot would be nice. It’d shake it up instead of just pressing LMB for varying amounts of time for 20 seconds waiting for cooldowns.
I just don’t consider it skill when its the trash solo enemies, just bothersome for relatively low rewards. Its like keeping a specific pace on a big crank you have to turn. Its a trivial matter to do but you can still mess up and most mistakes are due to fatigue/boredom not a lack of skill.
Tougher enemies though, absolutely keep us on our toes. Being able to faceroll or “rotation” them to death would be lame.
If you read anything I said, that one ability would be the basis of a lot of interactions for your weapon, things resetting, things happening. Not just another button to push.
combat is not boring or stale, what is missing is weapons types
for being in the renaissance time period, where are the greatswords and halberds with floppy hat fashion and flamboyant sleeves. surely the germans/french in aeternum would have brought them in droves over.
also considering that most people in aeternum are pirates, what happened to cutlasses and pistols combo. these guys would be the perfect medium armor players.
since romans came to the island, as per one of the early promotional videos, how about trident/shortspear and weighted fishing nets, gladiator style.
2ndly is combat consumables, more throwables, fire bombs, sticky potions for the frontline. smoke bombs, choking gas to screw up the backlines and prevent effective fire
the game actually became a sort of hack & slash type, and this is clearly seen when doing dungeon/expedition runs… it would be nice to have some more active attack/support/enhancement skills relative to the weapons used that is added in the line up. The game lacks diversity in terms of usable skills on fights and too simple. The game has reaction based combat, so it has to be tailored to this type of gameplay rather than the usual MMO chain or rotation of skills.
Another thing they can add is more weapons. I don’t see the reason why some of the mobs have more diverse weapons than the players. The setting is in the medieval period, so I’m pretty sure there is more than enough weapons to add on than the current selections. (or maybe they are planning it to be paid DLC )
