CPU Usage / Throttling causes stuttering

TLDR: Check to make sure your CPU / GPU isn’t touching thermal throttles. (causes fps stutter)

So I’m creating this topic to help folks that may or may not have been in the same boat as me. I have struggled with the optimization of this game for two years. Weird stagger / stuttering with no real reason. I tried all the FPS guides, fresh installs, etc. Changing my settings never helped.

I have (or did have 2 yrs ago) a top-of-the-line rig:
i9-10850
RTX 3090
4x8g ram @ 4000mhz
Custom water loop that keeps it all nice and cool.

So I never had any indication that I was hitting the thermal throttle so it wasn’t even on my radar.

Yesterday I happened across a discussion that touching the thermal throttle was causing issues for someone, so I re-assessed my overclock and sure enough I was occasionally tapping a self-imposed 70c thermal throttle on my CPU.

I’ve since adjusted my CPU power limits in my bios so that i’m not keeping it hard pressed against the bleeding edge of performance and my game quality has been notably better.

So if this helps anyone, great. If not… at least google will find this to help out someone in the future.

Nah. Stuttering is there no matter if you cpu, gpu, ram whatever are busy or not. It did come with last patch and its some game issue. And since it happens more on some period of day than others i bet on server side issue.

I’m sure game is so bad optimized that no pc can run it smoothly in wars/opr

The problem is server-side, definitely. Lumberyard F

I recall seeing a chat about something relating to water cooled PCs.

To be fair I have not suffered anything that can be considered untoward and I use an old Alienware Laptop as my PC (it has a better spec than some modern tower PC’s)

Yes, I have seen stuttering, “lag detected” messages, freezing and though I expected that to be just a normal part of the internet, it was only since the latest update that the stuttering has happened.

I’m usually listening to music on youtube on the background and, when I fast travel, sometimes the music stops for a second. What the hell is the game doing to cause firefox to do that? Big cpu usage spike or something? I had never seen any game do that before.

One thing is lag detected, which is the server, and another is stuttering. Lag=connection; stuttering/fps dip=your computer. I get stuttering way more often than I get lag. To me the servers are fine, but not the game engine. It needs better optimisation, and the memory leak fixed so we don’t have to restart the game every couple of hours.

I also suffer with exactly the same issues you just explained.

This is exactly what happens, so much load is generated on one core that the CPU is overloaded because it cannot divide the task between the other cores.
All processes that are then also running on the core have to take a short break.
That’s why youtube stops etc.
The lag detected can also be due to the fact that the network card simply does not receive any more data.
The problems have become much worse since the last update.

When I have the game open for several hours, it is sometimes so bad that the fps drops every time I kneel down to pick Hyssop.

This game is broken from sketch by using Azoth Engine at the first place.

New World 2.0 is needed with Unreal Engine 5 version to play the game without any of these problems really.

It’s some kind of significant engine issue, coupled with intermittent server-side lag.

I just replaced my 16Gb DDR4 @3600 CL16 B-Die RAM with 32Gb DDR4 @3600 CL16-19 (not B-Die), and maybe (maybe…) there’s a slight improvement, but I don’t see it, to be honest. I thought this would help after reading a post mentioning that, but it hasn’t really improved anything for me. This is on a 5800x3D and an RTX3080, with the game in an NVME.

The amount of ram (GB) doesn’t really help, the only improvement is to overclock the speed of your ram. 3600-> 3733mhz is very achievable on 5800x3d

It’s a pain, but really benefits gaming.

I’ll pay more attention when I stutter. I’ve written it off as unavoidable until its fixed. This patch has made the stuttering worse so much that the server teleports you forward

Big bummer, it happens the most to me in OPR/War when many players are around.

I can’t pinpoint the issue, happens randomly. However, the OPar respawn being built always guarantee a stutter

This game consumes cpu much more than anything ffs
