Dangerous GPU Usage and power spike when in background!

I’ve been monitoring this directly from the PSU, wall socket, and AIDA64 sensor readings.

The game, when running in the background, is consuming more power than it should. It’s even consuming more power than when in focus!! I’ve noticed GPU power usage alone spike to 470w
at a point!! If it happens more often, my card will definitely get fried.
I’m running a 6900XT liquid devil (non ultimate), it can potentially draw up to 525w of power (3 8-pin + pcie power); but I highly doubt the GPU components (VRMs, controllers, chipset… etc) are designed to accommodate this much power without any mods. I’m suspecting something is critically wrong with the game and maybe that’s why many GPUs have reportedly died, and it isn’t just EVGA.

I’ve set monitors refresh rate down to 60hz; limited FPS from AMD Adrenaline to 60FPS, game FPS limit to 60, vsync on, and enabled the option to limit FPS when in background, drivers updated, and the game still consumes ATLEAST 90% of power in background compared to when in focus.

I know games need to use some resources to stay alive in the background, but not to use 100%+ of my GPU!

This is worrisome… are more people going to have dead GPUs from this game?

75% usage but not in the “danger” zone… still, 75% usage while watching the queue is… sad.

GPU chipset utilization might be at 75%, maybe lower… but total GPU card power draw when in background exceeds 90% of card TDP… and in some cases FAR EXEEDS 100% of card TDP!

`watched GPU-Z now since my first post, nope power draw is not that high, 50-65% depends on “tab” in the game or not.

same problem. 85-90 % of my gcpu and 5 gb ram while in “idle mode”

This is a few seconds of logs… over 400W GPU power draw at 80% usage, over 350W at 60ish… my GPU is bios limited to 330W.
And this is just being on the menu screen!

The problem lies in the New World Vsync. This overwrites the AMD driver and does not work in the background. When I turn off the Vsync in the NW setting, the card no longer starts up but stays at 60fps. The maximum 60fps are stored in the AMD driver.
Interim solution: Max 60fps in NW setting and Vsyn with max 60fps in the AMD driver. Switch off Vsyn in the NW setting.
I hope the bug will be fixed soon.

nope, still the same.

I have to highlight this aswell.
I’m using an Asus Strix RTX 2070 card, and i’ve NEVER seen this high usage ever.
Like from the main client i noticed early on like why the fuck are my fans spinning. Checked the temps, sitting at 85 degrees… And up to 90-92 ingame. And i’ve mixed and mashed with all settings without any good result.

Like, i even tried to MAX out all fans in the computer to 100% all the time, and graphic card still didnt go down in temp cause of the power usage. It’s just insane. This can’t be on the hardware end, there is no way, but i also don’t know what the solution and what is actually causing this but this is fiery stuff. I hope they take this feedback serious.

On a sidenote, my little brother has a 2090 card and has the exact same issues.

This allready drove me nuts in the betas. I have to switch to windowed mode and turn the resolution to the minimum to prevent my 6800xt from heating wild while in queque. Was hoping they fix that. It feels like there is no way to minimize it.

I’ve had a 3090 FTW3 Ultra for almost a year and I’ve played some extremely demanding games in that time.

An hour into New World, I lost display on both monitors and my GPU fans went 100%. I hard reset quickly and everything was fine. I tried it again and once more an 1.5 hours or so into the game, it did the same thing. Temps are fine but the game is pulling over 300W doing nothing.

I did read someone’s Gigabyte 3080 got killed today.

I know alot of people on the forums and on reddit are saying that “software cannot kill your hardware… its a hardware issue”… but that isnt completely true… software can kill GPUs, there’s a history of some old benchmark tools that were capable of totally burning your CPU.

If your card is doing the black screen and fan ramp. Be careful. Its the precursor to a dead card.

Ive lost my 2nd to this issue tonight.
And my first with the same in the beta.
