From what i can see in game, the armors/outfits are “stuck” to the model by what is called “ancor” points, these ancor points are attached to the RIG of the MODEL.
What does this mean for the game?
This mean that everytime a new skin or outfit is created, it just gets applied more or less automatically to the model by those ancor points. We can see this if you take a look at the waist bit of most oufits, especially those that do not have a trenchcoat/cape. IT’s also the reason why most of the skins “feel” same-y. Because they are using the same few “design patterns”, to make all this work much much faster and easier.
So the work for creating an outfit/skin is not as much in making it fit to the model, but in creating the textures and the meshes for it.
This means that UNLIKE in games 10-20 years ago, where EACH and EVERY single armor needed to be custom made for every single character model (like they do in FF14 for example) in New World they just fix one of the “design patterns” to the model and every single outfit/skin that uses the same base pattern will be applied to the model automatically.
They even talked about it in the video, they mentioned they have constraints for skins, WHICH Is basically those DESIGN patterns !
This means that with RELATIVE ease… they can create 6-10 body types, and automate MOST of the work. Because they will have to CREATE the design patterns for the NEW BODY TYPE. But once that DESIGN PATTERNs are created, all skins will apply to the body using them.
They DO NOT have to make every single outfit fit the BODY, they just need to make the PATTERNs.
So in my opinion, it’s the thing that will REQUIRE the LEAST Work for how MUCH it will IMPROVE the game, every single BODY TYPE will exponentially increase the customization options everyone has.
PS: For them to make skins, “fit” better they would have to put the SAME type of groundwork as they would need for making NEW BODY TYPES (they would need to alter, the costume/outfit “ancor” points)… so it would be COUNTERPRODUCTIVE to not do things the RIGHT WAY, and KILL 2 BIRDS with 1 STONE , offer better Character CUSTOMIZATION Options and BETTER FITTED SKINS (I stand corrected, this is more like killing 300 birds with 1 stone
)
I hope this gives you a bit of a better insight on how these things work with this kind of thing. If you want to look extensively into it there are plenty of courses that will teach you how to build character models, animate, create this patterns as well as create outfit and stuff like that. It’s often a lot of work (when u have to start from 0)… but the devs do not have to start from 0, they already have all the tools and resources they require, all they have to do is “change” what is already there WHICH is worlds easier and faster then starting from 0.
