The solution to the RNG / Umbrals that would SIGNIFICANTLY improve crafting and decrease player frustration is simple:
Umbrals should allow you to:
move crafted items to 600 and have them roll a random third perk (doing this would make the item BOP)
reroll 1 perk slot with umbrals on legendaries only (once that perk slot is re-rolled, no other perk slot can be rerolled on that item, but you can keep re-rolling it as many times as you want with umbrals).
This creates:
more demand for crafted items. People will buy good bases to push to 600 instead of just not buying them at all (which is happening now). Crafted items are flooding the market and it will only get worse as demand for “non bis” continues to decrease with the new dungeon mutator loot.
opens up the market for people to buy multiple good bases so we can gear out lots of alternate builds for different encounters / scenarios and alternate weapon setups. This is a GOOD thing since alts do not exist. Keep players playing by allowing them to build out lots of different build types (like an alt). With the current RNG setup, it’s hard enough to work towards BIS in ONE weapon combo setup.
gives more control to players, lessens RNG, lessens frustration and ridiculous money sinks (like crafting x10 amulets only to have 6 roll with mining / logging luck, what a joke. I saved up for 2 weeks to do this and couldn’t re-sell near anything. That alone makes someone want to quit)
gives more reason to run mutators (because you’ll need the umbrals to bump your crafted gear / reroll perks), giving more value and demand to the orbs, pushes more players into end game content which increases social interactions / group availability.
Stops legendaries (which roll far and few between) with a bad perk from being useless / dead in value.
Increases a sense of gear pride / player progression as you work to bolster your gear.
P.S. - no item should roll with a gathering /crafting luck type. This should have to be forced. This instantly kills any item and makes it near impossible to sell.
I agree that gathering/crafting luck shouldn’t be a in the random perk bucket for crafting. I however don’t agree that crafts should be auto legendary and have 2 perks chosen. This would wipe out all the BiS epic items currently out there.
I also don’t think rerolling is needed, there needs to be an element of lucky or unlucky when crafting and having the option to change the ‘unlucky’ craft is not the way to go. Maybe for leg crafted items some of the materials could be recouped (asmodean etc.).
I think the solution is that (like your gathering/crafting perks) perks which aren’t the ‘norm’ don’t belong in the random crafting bucket. If people want them then they can specifically set them when crafting.
How so? Just because you can re-roll with umbrals doesn’t guarantee you get what you want, ever. RNG is still RNG. Being able to flat out buy your bis is a HUGE win for most people as it removes the extreme time sink you will still take on trying to reroll a perk. Then you can move onto your next slot to work on moving into BIS.
Most MMO’s survive the test of time because of alts. Alts do NOT exist in this game, but a plethora of weapon / gear sets do. Maybe one day I want to play a gaxe/warhammer 200con / 300str bruiser. But next week I want to go back to a void blade / IG build. This is a whole new set of BIS gear / perks to optimize. Good luck trying to gear multiple builds with the current RNG, its a slog and just makes people want to quit.
Sorry, I misread that ‘move crafted items to 600 and have them roll a random third perk’ meant that you could use umbral shards to craft a leg item.
I still stand by my point in that the issue is the perks in the random bucket though. Take away the ‘niche’ perks and that in itself would take away futility of crafting atm.
However, as mutations come out, why would people buy any 590+ items anymore than they buy them now? Mutations are about to introduce a lot of 600+ items into the world including more leggos. The market is only going to get worse as more non legendaries enter the market. Non legos are already extremely hard to re-sell and continue to decrease in value every week as more enter the system.
With the proposed system, there is an actual reason to buy really good bases. Something like a life leech / keen ring would be a REALLY good base. This would be even more sought out than it is now because of the fact you can move it into lego status and perk roll.
In the current system, this item sells, but a lot of people with big wads of cash are holding out for their “bis” or spam crafting rings (creating an insane amount of 595+ rings for the market that no one wants). That just isn’t fun / engaging gameplay and it only causes extreme frustration and makes people quit as it feels like they will never achieve their goals.
I meant that the reduced bucket would be for crafting, not drops. This alone would dramatically increase the number of decent crafted items vs those dropped.
This needs to be done as some of the named drops are either BiS or close to BiS for weapons and jewelry.
Trash gear isn’t just affecting the level 60s. Your solution is great for endgame players, but people that are leveling from 1 to 60 will continue to get trash loot until they unlock the umbral system.
I don’t agree with the umbral reroll system. However, I do agree with streamlining the list of allowable perks to be rolled.
Leveling to 60 is such a short time frame in the span of the game since you only have to do it once. The gear given to you while leveling is not an issue for leveling. You can even buy new gear on the TP for 10-20g for most of your levels.
But I don’t disagree that the crafted gear for mid levels just stinks and is worthless. Not sure why this is.
Thats true but ideally it should not work that way. Level <60 should get good loot, they shouldn’t have to go to the TP to get good gear.
As well, the umbral system is gated behind the Expertise system. That grind is the main reason players are quitting, the process to get to 590 GS just isn’t fun. Throughout this grind, they shouldnt be getting trash loot either.
I agree that loot sucks right now, but the outlined system isn’t inclusive enough.
