Did they Lie or are they just Incompetent?

So the truth is out. It will not be possible, after all, to transfer characters from one region to another despite being encouraged during their botched launch to roll a character anywhere and transfer it later. Now it transpires that what players were encouraged to do at the chaotic start, (roll a character on a low pop server) was wrong. It isn’t possible to transfer characters from one region to another (so they now claim) because apparently the player data is held on separate physical databases (as if they didn’t already know that). So either Amazon told a bare faced lie and told player they can transfer later (knowing they couldn’t) just to ease the shambolic disastrous launch or they didn’t know that transfers between regions aren’t possible which makes them not only shambolic, but incompetent, too. For an organisation as resourced as Amazon, the management of the game launch and now the unbelievably poor post game treatment of “good faith” players is staggering. Stick to delivering parcels, Amazon, you aren’t fit to be a games development business.
(And why bring us Guild Wars 2 again? Nothing new about New World! But that’s for a different thread.)

Someone probably said things without checking with the right people if it was possible.

It was likely a matter of PR people not being developers instead of something malicious. This happens all the time in every conceivable realm; PR person sees no reason why you wouldn’t be able to transfer to X if you can transfer to Y and realistically, that might be a decent assumption. Even if the developers did think you’d easily be able to switch between data centers, maybe some blocker came up. Software developers are not omniscient and if they promised something, that’s obviously a negative and they shouldn’t make a habit of it.

To me though, it seems like PR didn’t know about potential issues and informed everyone to that effect. It’s unfortunate and maybe you will be able to switch servers in the future once they find an elegant solution to that or something. As a software developer (not as a game dev though), situations like this happen constantly. It doesn’t matter the size of the firm; if you have a PR person or a media management type who is not a developer, they will say things that are not true. Not because they are being malicious, but because they don’t understand why some specific issue would be problematic for X goal. That’s not their job and while they should make significant effort towards saying only demonstrably true things, sometimes that falls by the wayside in the heat of the moment. I’ve done it myself.

TL;DR Drink a beer and watch the boats go by, it’ll be fine.

I have yet to see any official post telling you to make a character on another region cause you will be able to region transfer later.

They have said that there wilk be server transfers, and that you will be able to join your friends. That you will be able to do region transfers, that is your own erroneous conclusion.

Yes, as said above, probably just someone misinformed.

On the other hand, what made all the people make characters in different regions when they were adding new servers to the existing regions while saying you should go elswhere?

I agree, nothing nowhere shows anyone saying you can transfer regions. I did see a Twitter post about some player asking if they can transfer later. And the rep saying yes. I can’t recall exactly but I think the post was something like “if your server is full and you still want to play the game, you can make a character on a lower pop server”

But that doesn’t state regions at all. And it’s also if you just wanted to play right away. So it’s completely valid.

Given just how much miscommunication is floating around between developers and community managers, I’d say it’s rather a problem of not conveying the right information to the right people. And unfortunately that leads to problems for the players.

I think under these circumstances, AGS needs to sort out their communication chain better. And they also need to figure out a solution for those who are on different locations, so that they can get their character transferred. They mocked things up and need to solve it, regardless of how difficult it is.

I have friends, who were in this situation, because my server was one of the fullest from the beginning. They made characters on a newly open server, which became full just a few days ago, it didn’t have any queues for days after it was added. It would never occure to them to go to a different region.

Exactly. The only thing I know is basically all EU were full from the start. Not like NA which had only half full. But I wouldn’t go to a different region , face unplayable le ping, and try to level with intent of keeping it. Knowing id have to eventually go back to my region for a better quality of life.
To be fair. It’s been a week and a bit. If they regain can still be max level for a while without missing much tbh.

1 they said 2 weeks 2 weeks ago. 2 with the names being unique through out the game the name must be the code holder. should be easy to transfer anywhere

Tldr, but your argument is flawed from the start. “They” don’t need to be to be one thing or the other just because you’ve put two options on the table. “They” are people and I would think you wouldn’t won’t someone calling you a lier or incompetent because you messed something up at your job .
