Lost Ark isn’t a hardcore grind game. It’s a pay to win game. That’s why you lose % chance to upgrade your gear at 3 different points and it sinks all the way down to 30%. It’s enticing you to buy.
Without that chance to fail, the game would actually be quite fun. But it’s too depressing to waste all your mats failing 7/8 attempts on the lower percentages… or even the higher percentages, if you get really unlucky. I failed 5 times in a row on an 80% upgrade. Combine that with failing 9/10 at 50%, and I was done with that nonsense.
I disagree. An MMO is perfectly capable of keeping a player base of decent magnitude, but in order to do it several things have to be true, and they weren’t for New World.
Crafting, for instance, has to be enticing and rewarding. Lots of players love crafting. New World’s crafting system is unfortunately among the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s the only MMO I’ve played where I basically haven’t bothered with it. It lacks incremental rewards, it’s too difficult to get to the point where you can craft anything useful, and most of what you craft is dumpster fire quality. I’m an engineer and looking forward to the Blunderbuss very much, but I’m still planning to craft exactly ZERO Orichalcum Blunderbusses.
Further, there has to be actual content. New World is actually fun to play in dungeons, for example, but there just aren’t enough dungeons AND they’re locked behind those stupid orbs. Look at when WoW launched. It had a whopping SEVENTEEN dungeons. And, sure, a couple of those were more likely to be done by one faction than the other (Deadmines, Wailing Caverns), or faction locked (Stockade, Ragefire Chasm), but the fact is that across the original 60 levels they had many, many more dungeons ready to go than New World did. Even if you look at older school games before instanced dungeons became a thing - like EverQuest - the outside dungeons were much bigger, had more bosses, and were arguably less buggy.
Then there’s just overall polish. While I’m sure we’ve all laughed at various times when just jumping to a higher point causes our 20 mob trains to grumble and wander back to their original spawns, or when chopping down a tree caused it to fly off into the sky, the fact is that stuff like that is ridiculous and kind of sad in 2021. They can’t seem to patch without breaking things, either. The launch of New World itself was pretty good overall, but even much older MMOs managed to patch the game without having to disable their in-game systems or introduce multiple game breaking bugs.
I think if New World fixes this stuff and manages to release some decent content and taper down the grind a bit then it could still recover to a good chunk of players. The game’s potential is still there. However, it’s going to be an uphill battle and they need to move faster than their current pace.
