Every single drop from elite enemies in Myrkgard have been 500 gear score.
The only time I have gotten higher than 500, was from a boss or elite chest.
So the regular elite enemies cant raise your watermark?

I was told it updates even if it just drops, but after a week with no significant drop score increase i just equip everything I get now. it SEEMs to drop a LITTLE bit higher gear score occasionally. Most shit is still 500-505.
crafted does not raise watermark.
A dev feedback post confirmed that you don’t need to equip the gear, it doesn’t even need to be in your inventory, I believe the update happens the moment the gear is generated as a drop from the mob. It can be any mob to my knowledge the only exception is named pieces of gear. Crafted items don’t raise the gear score as they’re not dropped in that same manner.
So what is it then?

I went through 3 elite zones so far, and all I have seen are 500 items.
I got 5 chest pieces just this morning from Myrkgard, and all 5 of them were 500.
It seems bugged or something. There’s no way I have gotten this many items in elite zones, and not a single one is above 500.

Yes mostly bad luck. The gear score watermark is very aggressive because the odds that something will drop that is above your watermark is very small.
However the devs confirmed there is a forgiveness system built in. Every time you get a drop and it’s not a GS that’s higher than your watermark it alters the luck ever so slightly so the next drop is a tiny bit more likely to drop above the watermark. This way even if you’re unlucky you’ll still eventually always get a GS increase.
Also keep in mind that watermarks are per slot and for weapons, per weapon. So you can have say a watermark of 495 for your chest, and 500 for your gloves and a 500 drop for your chest would constitute a watermark increase but it wouldn’t for your gloves. And unless you’re keeping precise check of which is which you likely have had watermark increases but just not known it. Watermark scores for all your slots are hidden so unless you’re tracking them with a spreadsheet or making notes for every drop you probably have had increases.
But it’s designed specifically to be a grind, it’s end game grind designed to last a long time, In a similar way rare drops in raids are designed to keep WoW players playing long term, the difficult grind is deliberate. Right now the most effective way to do this is to group up with other people grinding gear score, and hit certain areas where mobs spawn fast and have high % chance at gear drops.
Yes regular elites can drop them, however, the dev said the watermark improving drop would be “rare” from regular elites. He specifically pointed out that NAMED elites have an improved chance. So basically, dungeon bosses and the open-world named elites.
Yes, the dev did say that Thus, to read between the lines… for them to add a Pity system to the drop rate is pretty solid evidence that the drop rate is really low.
Even regular mobs drops items that will increase your watermark - if they are high enough level.
In the far east of Shattered Mountains, there is a area called Spryla Tower (or some such, at work, so cant check map) - you can solo those easily and increase your water mark - but only up to a certain point.
The level of the mob limits the possible gear score drop. Need 65-66 for gs 600 I believe.
Not sure ho far you can push it on normal mobs in the mentioned area, but you can got quite a bit into the 500s.
I just started wartermarking today. It seem like it will take awhile. But got up to 517 after a few hours. Got a 600 named drop sword coral lash. Great upgrade.

Sorry I don’t have it, it was a length reply on this forum from a dev which was then screenshot and linked on the reddit, I can’t remember the original source. Maybe search the reddit for “watermark” and look for linked images of orange text which indicate AGS feedback on the forums.
