Each weapon should 'feel' OP (in regards to PTR Ice Gauntlet)

The truth:

Heavy Freeze is auto-win vs all melee except for heavy shield tanks.

OP is complaining that now he can’t rely on overpowered weapon, so he will lose viewers on his stream.

im standing by my point people do jump out of roots and out of ice walls.

Lol you are just wrong.

Imagine writing all of this just to realize breaking out of freeze is as simple as hitting your space bar. That’s it. Or just iframe the ice wall. But go on about how much of an expert you are, please. Multiple pvp tournament wins? lol

I don’t know why you’re conviniently missing out on the part that it’s just toxic design, even if you can jump out of freeze which I already stated you can do and is most likely a bug, heavy freeze nerf is a must whether you like it or not, and I say that as mainly an ice gauntlet player, but if you don’t see that I think you’re a bit lost and hopeless.

I just have a problem with claims of toxicity concerning an ability which has a mechanic that is replicated throughout the game. Gravity well is a ridiculously strong root that you can’t jump out of.

Is the IG great against idiot melees who smash their faces into the keyboard and spam left click? Yes. It’s really strong, and in my opinion, it should be… but toxic?

There are counters to all the weapons in the game, and maybe they’re nuanced, but that’s what makes weapon diversity exciting. Is the expectation really that any class be balanced perfectly with another class? That’s the fastest way to a boring, water down design.

One thing I wish they would consider is how weight effects mage damage. Mages should have a miserable experience in anything heavier than light. If you’re a mage and a GA player gets on you, you shouldn’t last long, but you should be able to defend yourself. Heavy freeze is a good way to put distance between you and a melee player. Perhaps the buffs to rapier would make it a great counter to IG.

There are some common themes that I think we all agree on though. 1) Amazon has really shown their cards as amateur game designers, as no experienced or knowledgeable game designer approaches balance as heavy handed as they are. 2) If there are actual bugs with jumping out of root, inconsistencies with damage and specific mods, isn’t it a good idea to fix bugs fundamental to the kit before deciding a balance is in order? 3) it sucks to dump a ton of time into a build, only to have that time feel unjustified. It creates massive rifts in the community and just makes the game less fun.

It just seems very strange for a studio struggling to build trust with their players would even consider a massive balance overhaul. Maybe my perspective is unique, but the last few weeks as a mage have been awful. Having both of your weapons completely broken left me frustrated and not wanting to login. After the fixes, it finally felt playable again, and I’ve been dabbling in end game, my patience feeling rewarded. Now this week, “oh yeah, let’s intentionally break your weapons now.” It’s just frustrating, and like I said, maybe my perspective is unique, but it’s not a good experience at all. Maybe it makes sense to apply dramatic changes when their player base is more condensed, or maybe they have analytics which show 90% of the players who haven’t logged in in the last 7 days were melee players who were killed by an ice gauntlet?

To try and be constructive (apologies if this post is more one sided complaining), here’s my feedback on how AGS can balance AND communicate more effectively: Every major balance change in most successful games will include developer notes on why an adjustment is being made. It’s typically backed up by real data, and it demonstrates that the changes being made are meant to combat the imbalance pulled from the data. While the conclusions made by the developer are subjective to a degree, it’s an interpretation of actual data. Notice how AGS has presented the balance changes in comparison. And apologies again if this is out of line, but it seems like balance done by someone with no experience just turning knobs without any justification.

You can’t jump out of roots.

Gravity well is not a root.

Yes you can.

No you can’t. Stop spreading misinformation.

What is gravity well if it’s not a root? If it’s an effect that prevents a player from moving, it’s a root. If it also prevents the player from using items or fighting back, it’s a stun.

Gravity well is not a root because you can use several abilities to escape it.

Roots can only be broken by hatchet berserk.

You absolutely can, it’s fairly common knowledge, and is a widely used tactic against IG in pvp. Quit assuming you’re the knowledge police, you’re only demonstrating your ignornance.

you know what beats ice gauntlet cc, sword and shield. You can literally block every attack if u take a defensive stance. Just cause you want the WH/GA to double as a tank buster and instant kill mean that you need to nerf IG. The fact that WH/GA player can already LMB spam and kill mages, light armor dps with ease with insane cc and gap closers. You literally do the same if not more BURST damage per second up close, why shouldn’t IG players be rewarded for you getting caught in their root, which btw doesn’t work 50% of the time and is only 1 second long, compared to 2-3 second stuns with a hammer/GA.

Oh, ok sir. So it’s not a root because it’s possible to use a counter ability to escape it? And to be a root, it must be 100% inescapable? Are you trolling me? If so, well done.

Wait you think that melee can easily beat Pre-PTR nerf Ice gauntlet? Lol. You are not playing the same game, or atleast not at a high level.

FYI ice gauntlet root can easily last up to 13 seconds.

I do agree that gravity well is another toxic design. By toxic, I’m not talking about my personal opinion on what I deem as noxious to the game, but a mechanic that has little to no counterplay, or that the counterplay is simply not intuitive (such as jumping out of a root, that’s 99.9% a bug, I highly doubt the developer sat there thinking hey I’m gonna add a line of code to let people jump out). Gravity well however is a slow projectile that is fairly easy to evade and you can get out by using mobilty skills. The latter does not apply to frostbite root.

In Xaryu’s video regarding the balance notes he displays a clip where he fights a greataxe player jumping out of his roots, he’s forced to bunny hop for a fair amount of seconds, unable to do any other action until the game allows him to register other things, sometimes jumping once won’t let you evade straight away and you need to jump multiple times. That’s just silly.

People should not be able to jump out of roots, that’s a fact, but heavy freeze is also quite strong. The perk needs tuning in some way or manner.

Sadly, rapier is bad versus ranged weapons, including Ice Gauntlet. (even with the changes) Rapier is more of an utility/combo burst tool similar to Ice Gauntlet that has great synergy when paired with other weapons. Here’s an example of what Rapier can pull out when paired with Ice Gauntlet in the right scenario. riposte bait into ice gauntlet bait into rapier nuke I didn’t abuse heavy freeze on purpose in order for him not to use riposte and swap to bow before nuking him with rapier (I could have also done something similar by running ice spike instead of entombed by the way). Ice Gauntlet is really strong even without heavy freeze, seriously.

Completely agreed.

I do believe the justification is that the general consensus when you ask players, is that the Ice Gauntlet root is silly, being stunlocked is silly and so on. That’s probably one of the measurements they took. The damage nerfs though, completely uncalled for (and all because of a bug on ultimate chill, but that’s a whole different story).

You can’t jump out of roots, for the millionth time. How many times does it have to be repeated?

Saying that IG is “literally impossible to beat” is going overboard. Sure it’s difficult to play against a good IG player but there are definitely ways to play around it. Like people have already said, u can jump out of the ice wall and roll out of the ice storm. You can bait their abilities too. There are many ways to play around enemies weaknesses and just because you haven’t figured out how to do so doesn’t mean it isnt possible.
