Umbral Shards can only be applied to an equipment piece if both of these 2 conditions are met:
- The equipment piece is Gear Score 600.
- Your Expertise for that piece of equipment is also 600.
So does this mean anything below 600 is worthless since you can’t upgrade it to 625 in the future? All the gold spent on 595-599 gear with the right perks all for nothing? That’s a bummer
Gear under 600 is not worthless. You can use it to clear the mutation levels up to the hardest one. As 600 is endgame, it is kinda fair for the hardest difficulty to require the highest gear in the game to clear. This way you have a goal in the game, to get the 600 gear.
Yeah this is honestly one of the dumbest changes they have made. A 600 GS item that already existed can be upgraded but a 599 GS one can’t. I really hope they don’t go through with this change and make so many peoples work obsolete while others is not.
these devs have done a terrible job with this game. Our time means nothing to them.
Good point. Tough to balance providing incentive to push through mutations and reach 625 vs loot less than 600 being worthless. Would prefer they just remove a lot of the RNG to perks/stats on gear rolls so it’s at least not as ridiculously hard to get high quality 600 drops.
It is like in many other games, when the item rating increases, you need new gear, it is nothing new.
With the expertise increase there will sure drop more 600gs items

Why not introduce ‘piece of umbral shard;’ used to upgrade weapons from GS 500 all the way to 600. Using multiple pieces of umbral shards increases the GS bump further.
Seems very stupid that I have to spend another 200k+ gold on “bis” 600 gs gear before I can upgrade it further even tho I already have spent 100-200k on my 595-599 gs set with bis perks…
I’ve run 15 gen/laz runs in the last week, 2 flagged daily chest runs, OPR dailys, constant wars and invasions in the last week and I’ve looted exactly one 600 legendary:
One legendary dex/int Warhammer with mana regen on hit, ancient bane, and Stam regen on hit. Absolutel trash.
The drop rate is trash and they aren’t going to fix it.

Your current expertise is 590. That is the cap atm. They listed in the patchnotes that the Expertise will be increased to 600
My gearscore is around 570. I can get it crafted up to 595+ but literally anything crafted and dropped at 600 has RNG stats.
So what they’re saying is, grind RNG gear, grind umbral shards to upgrade said gear… PER PIECE.
I hope they up the chance of crafting 600gs items
Except anyone who just so happened to purchase 600 GS can upgrade theirs as opposed to 599 GS who just get told to screw off and get new gear. Some people have paid 50-60K for a 599 GS gear with BIS perks and now it is basically obsolete. I would be perfectly fine with this change if you could only upgrade 601-625GS.
