Are there any plans in the near future to update fishing or can you provide us with any information with regard to what we can at least look forward to? I was quite fond of fishing, but it became very stale at max level and no longer feels rewarding at all.
I feel that what sets fishing apart from the other skills in New World is that its very much supplementary to the other gathering/tradeskills. It is unique in that the loot obtained can provide crafting mats for Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Jewelcrafting, and Cooking. However, there isn’t a whole lot of control over which of those resources you are actualy gathering. I think that its place within the gathering professions is good but the current state/ experience of fishing needs to be improved on.
I’ve listed a few problems I see with fishing that I feel need to be addressed, I’m not on the forums nearly as much as I should be so apologies if this has already been suggested. Hopefully this can generate some additional input on how to make this gathering profession a little more worthwhile / enjoyable:
Issue #1: Fishing is Not Rewarding Enough for the Time Investment
After spending hours upon hours, upon hours…upon hours with tight lines, hitting 200 fishing (then legend fishing for a short while afterwards) does not feel rewarding at all. I don’t feel any need to fish anymore. I find it to be the least lucrative, yet its the one gathering skill that requires the most time investment, with the least amount of player input. At level 200, my only incentive to fish is for the T5 Fish. In order to obtain this I still have to go to the 3* hotspots and still have to fight RNG to get legendary fish. Additionally the market for my legendary fish is not that hot- at least on my server. Not to mention a few of the legendary fish are actually USELESS at the moment. With regard to the T5 Stat foods, its far more economical, for both the average player and the crafter to go for the T4 attribute foods.
Issue #2: Gear
I actually had a blast doing the fishing questline, I felt the end reward rod was worth it - I love my new pole! I did feel some way learning after the fact, that there are several legendary poles and its up to RNG which one you get. Theres a couple poles I would have rather had and it makes me wonder if we should have been given the option to choose, or get a differet rod somehow.
While the rod is the bees knees, Armor rewards have decent perks but a ton of useless stats. Furthermore, the ONLY way to get any new fishing gear is from End Game loot. While this makes perfect sense for the BIS fishing gear, we should be provided options to upgrade our gear between the questlines and AFTER the questlines. There are no craft mods to make fishing gear. There are no world drops for fishing gear Basic, Uncommon, Rare or otherwise- now that I think of it there doesn’t seem to be ANY other gear besides the Vengeful set.
Issue #3: Focus Stat
The bonus at 300 Focus points with regard to fishing is pretty lame. Getting a 10min reduction on my inn respawn is pretty useless to me as a fisherman.
Issue #4: Cooking Recipies / Trophies
The fishing/cooking recipies and their descriptions, along with the description for the fishing trophies need attention and need to be addressed. @Doradox91 has a lenghty response here with regard to trophies / recipies mix up here: Fishing - The Broken Profession - #45 by Doradox91)
Issue #5: Fishing Bait
The current bait selection is pretty much Firefly or Glowworm. These 2 baits are practically necessary for not wasting your time, but the other baits seem useless. No variety, no actual point in using the other ones. Furthermore, the baits only increase the size / chance for rares, rather increase the chance of catching a specifc fish which is how bait should normally work. Sure every fish will eat a worm or a fly, but generally you should want and in some cases NEED special baits to land a particular fish (even some of the in-game lore talks about special lures). Currently the region the hotspot is in determines the resources you will obtain, but its still RNG from that list. If this was mining it would be like farming Ori but the nodes ALSO drop stone, flint, lodestone, sometimes starmetal. We have no way of catching a specific fish/resource, unlike the other gathering professions they can simply just go to the resource they want to farm. this current system makes fishing very cumbersome.
Issue #5 Chest Rewards
There was a very noticable uptick in chest droprate on 3* hotspots as my skill level increased. Sometimes I’d fish out up to 6 or 7 chests on a 3* hotspot. You get a decent amount of ingots, and a fuckton of Gems aside from the fish and salvaged resources. While this is nice, a lot of it is stuff I do not necessarily want- I don’t need those 30 random common jewels right now I need Fish Oil.
Here are a list of suggestions:
TARGETTED FISHING
We should be experts at catching any fish using a variety of bait. Allow us to weigh chances for catching specific fish. For example: if I want to catch Salmon Roe, let me put on a bait that will increases chances of catching salmon specifically. So my 3* hotspot should yield like 70-80% salmon
MOAR BAITS / EQUIPMENT
Give us a wider selection of bait or add additional equipment that is useful. WE can use the baits or lures or hooks to increase the chances of whatever we are trying to catch. The bait could be derived from new materials salvaged from the fish you catch. The old boots, and anchors and junk, whatever the item is, instead of granting ingots which we already get from chests, perhaps we can craft that junk into something useful- equipment, or craft mods for armor or fishing jewelry for example. Allow us fishermen to craft a wider selection of baits, and send our salvaged bait material to an engineer or alchemist to make baits. You can implement special baits will give fisherman unique drops to fish for.
FISHING CRAFT MODS
We. Need. This. Allow us to fish up crafting mods, obtain them in fishing chests, or salvage fish for them, or even CRAFT a mod using salvaged mats that I can give to an armorer to make me some fishing gear.
FISHING GEAR WORLD DROPS
We need more gear to be available aside from the 3 sets available in game. The first set is pretty easily attainable. But the quest for the second set can’t really be completed safely until close to end game. The only droppable set is available in hard game content, this is fine for the BIS gear, but surely we need filler before we get there. Perhaps we can fish up old tattered gear and give it to a crafter to renew/refurbish.
CHEST REWARDS
I would like to see raw coin as a reward re-implemented into the chests, somehow. Maybe require special bait that will increase chests containing coin, or perhaps start giving us coin randomly like mobs give the random coin / azoth when we catch a fish, or even give us a token or quest token we can trade to the Master Fisherman for coin.
Bait material or baits in general can be added to chests.
Vials of Azoth as as rare drop would be a welcome addition to chests, this would help fishermen get around to the pesky out of the way hotspots.
MOAR HOTSPOTS / VARIED HOTSPOTS
I would like to see more hotspots in general, or hotspots added that hold a higher number of specific fish species (Cod Hotspot for example). Perhaps all hotspots turn to 3 star if you are level 200. Or Level 200 you can fish in open water (read: not a hotspot) and get the same loot as a 1* or 2* .
FISHING RECORDS / LOG BOOK / FISHING POSTS
Record our big catches in a log book so we can show off. Better yet, add a post to each hotspot hat has a list similar to the housing list, where we can see teh top 5 catches or something at each spot. The fish size can be used for something actually useful.
TAXIDERMIED FISH
Let us taxidermy more fish! I love the look of the taxidermy furnishing items.
SALVAGING
After cleaning 1000s of salmon, I should very very adept at it. As my fishing skill increases, I should be able to increase the chance of obtaining rare filets from the fish, since I’m better at salvaging cuts of meat. As my skill increase, increase the chance of obtaining rare filets from the fish.
FISHERMAN SPECIFIC COOKING
Most fisherman know how to clean and cook the fish they are catching. Perhaps if we havea certain level of BOTH cooking AND fishing we can make special food that traditional cooking skill cannot make. This would give a lot of value to fisherman.
FISHING QUESTS
I enjoyed the parts of the fishing quest line where you had to catch specific fish (I despised the amount of travel immensely though!) Fishing quests that can be obtained as a rare drop from fishing chests, these are one time quests that would reward coin, or fishing mats (bait / lures etc…)
FISH BOSS
Allow fisherman to summon a Kraken by fishing it so we can fight it for epic loots!
Hopefully these suggestions can garner some attention and maybe help generate additional ideas to help improve this skill!
