Forum posting priviliages?

Hi, I don’t really see a place to ask this, so here it goes…

Is there a way to earn the right to start using colorized text within my posts?

It is all very well and good to be able to use Bold and Italics, but it would be far better to be able to use a bit of color to highlight things instead. So, is there some way to earn the right to use some color in our posts?

Sadly, no - this text has the html code for red as a style attribute

Or maybe not sadly, as rainbow posts would probably proliferate across the forums.

I would like that as well

I like this game, but these forums need more work than the game itself in my opinion. If there were a way to enable colorized text highlights (and different ones than the moderators have, so there would be no confusion) then we could all get some better reading in.

The other thing that I would (eventually) want, is to be able to earn the right to moderate some of my own threads.

I have made several threads, over the last 5 months or so, attempting to express thoughts and ideas for the game, but these forums are horribly difficult to make good, useful threads on. Part of that is the ‘stream of consciousness’ style layout of the forums itself, but the main problem is, that when folks make a thread, there is no control mechanism to keep the thread “on topic”, and thus the community is deprived of earnest folks being able to prune out “off topic” posts.

This potentially leads all threads to become muddled, confusing, and not as effective a way of sharing good ideas.

Being able to have the ability to post threads into a specific forum, where like minded threads are the only threads present, could finally allow AGS to start getting useful feedback on ways to go forward with this game, and to keep just anybody from posting in such forums (say a notional "Faction mission GUI improvement thread" posted into a sub-forum where all could read, but only a committed few get to post in) we would need something like what the current system does when you unlock things.

For these forums to be as helpful to AGS as possible, they need clear, well focused threads that stay on topic (which would require some moderation) in order to get such threads.

I’m not ready, myself, to be able to write such threads, as I’m just not good enough with my posting skills, to get my point across clearly and concisely, but I am working on developing such skills.

I don’t think that one’s likely to happen - that level of authority is reserved for mods. Frankly, I don’t want the authority - it’s simply too open for abuse and simply moderating opinions that an OP may not agree with.

To be sure, such an option isn’t something I’m currently ready for, but then again, the idea would be for folks to be able to earn this right, but within the context of creating threads to discuss a specific thing, and these threads (at least as far as I am imagining them) would be posted in a mostly read only sub-forum, where folks would need to have earned the right to go there, even just to read the threads that folks earned the right to create there.

Right now, I don’t see how anything posted here on these forums is going to be able to be created that could be kept on topic long enough to provide a go-to place so AGS can count on the content within the thread being seen and read by a large enough cross-section of the player-base, to warrant their own reading, let alone taking up the ideas presented for consideration for future inclusion in New World sometime down the road.

Right now, the way the forums are laid out, if you are not getting enough folks replying to your threads, no one will ever see them, which is bad.

What kind of an effort would a poster need to make, here on the NW forums in terms of threads created, content created, ideas put forward and that sort of thing, would you think might be worthy of such a power, that of self moderation of some of their threads?

Perhaps such a thing cannot be done, but if not, can we perhaps get teamed up with an actual MOD, who could work with us on our ‘special threads’, so that such threads can be seen and read by everyone, but only those that have earned the right and trust of the forum community could post in them in the first place, but with the understanding that such threads are to remain focused upon the topic introduced in the OP (Original Post), and any content that strays off-topic gets moderator attention?

Keeping in mind, that the overall goal of having a sub-forum like what I am talking about is to get “showcase threads” where the thread is kept on topic, so as to be a good read, and getting a consensus on whether or not folks would want to see the ideas put into the game.

I’m starting to ramble on, I think, so I’ll stop for now, right after mentioning some things/threads I created since I first started posting here on these forums back in November 2021, after having played since October 8th 2021.

I have a current thread I’m working on, that can serve as something like an example for what I would hope to achieve with these kinds of threads, and it can be found Here. I tried to make a thread that I thought would appeal to every player of new world, but had to spend effort to get it back on track, which is a problem I have seen here on these forums (and which inspired me to make this thread). If you would like, please check out that thread, and let me know what you think about the ideas expressed in the OP, as well as how we need to be able to keep threads “on topic”.

Hope to see you two over there @Hiply and @MenoTwitch :grinning:

I have the highest level of forum access that can be granted to non-AGS staff today, trust level 3 (which you can see by the “Regular” forum tag I have), and I don’t think that should come with mod powers. As I said, it’s just too easy for us forum users to abuse or over-use moderator powers - even in our own topics.

Holy Cow!

I just checked your profile.

You have been here 330 days to my paltry 95, and while we both have created 30 threads to date, all the rest of my interactions pale in comparison.

{Tips hat to someone that deserves it}

Do you have the required knowledge to pick colors that are viewable by everyone? Do you know what colors would be unreadable by color blind people?

I know that I set my own background to black, because my eyesight is very poor now in my middle age, and I know that anyone else can do that and more, so…

Beyond that, that’s not why it can’t happen (but it’s one reason why I don’t believe it would if it could) - it’s simply not a supported function. The last time I checked Discourse it was not part of the core feature set and required a plug-in to add that.

Staff font colors/.backgrounds/shields/etc can be changed but that’s via a css change iirc.

And that is a shame, because colorized highlights would make for an interesting addition, and if thread starters could moderate their own “Special” threads, and keep them on topic, those threads would be of a higher quality, and then might just be useful for more than venting or just spit-balling.

Oh well, it was a thought, and one that had at it’s heart the desire to improve these forums, but hey. :grinning:
