Gem visual effect help

Hey everyone, just looking for a little guidance when it comes to making my character look appealing ! I noticed on my old war hammer I equipped a cut flawed ruby which granted 20% of damage is converted to fire. I pulled out my war hammer (with a skin or not) and it gave it a lovely fire effect on it when drawn, cool!

Well, this brings me to my next question. I now have a new warhammer and put a brilliant cut onyx in it which grants 25% extra damage to targets with full health, cool! Sure the stats of the gem are nice, but we all know I came for those visual effects again, unfortunately it appears the onyx does not give any fancy visual effects when the weapon is drawn?

My final question now being… so i’m like you know what, i’ll just buy a cut brilliant ruby to replace the onyx to get that cool fire effect again right? When i try to put the ruby in overtop the pre-existing onyx it is not letting me. I thought this was something you could do and it just destroys the old gem no?

Just a little bit of confusion here. If anyone can guide me on why I can’t put the ruby in even though I already put the onyx in let me know. Also if anyone has any insight on what gems create what visual effects that would be awesome, thanks!

Think you have to un-equip the hammer before it’ll let you, but don’t hate me if I’m wrong.

And the yellow one that grants lightning damage and whose name escapes me gets a zappy yellow lightning effect. Not too over the top, kinda cool. Not had any others myself yet.

Thanks for the reply @GojuSuzi !
The lighting effect sounds cool, awesome.

I tried un-equipping the weapon and adding a gem into my hammer with the onyx already in it and it says “Gem not compatible with that item” but I swear I have done it before like this with other weapons, which is why I am confused.

I’m thinking maybe since the cut brilliant onyx titled the hammer “Brash Ancient War Hammer of the Soldier” by adding the Brash effect, maybe now the cut brilliant ruby cannot be added because it’s now a “Brash” war hammer, although you think it would just change the name of the hammer again…

Regardless, maybe this is little bug that I am bringing attention to either way and hopefully get’s resolved if there isn’t an answer. Maybe I just have to purchase another war hammer with an empty socket and equip my cut brilliant ruby that way I am thinking with a clean slate, it would just be unfortunate as I bought the ruby and hammer from the Auction house.

The hammer has a permanent nature affliction. You can’t mix elements. You can add a nature gem for a green effect

I don’t think it’s a bug, unfortunately. As far as I’ve seen, only Elemental Damage modifier gems add a special effect. Topaz for electric, Ruby for Fire, Aquamarine for Ice(I like the effect, hate the damage type in this game) and so on. There’s also Void, Arcane, and Nature. With colors Yellow, Red, White, Purple, Blue, and Green respectively.

These visual effects are only for the elemental damage conversions. Nature, lightning, fire, void, cold, and arcane.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys got everything figured out! It does appear just the elemental boost gems give visual effects.

@Ugoldengoose you solved the problem to why I couldn’t put my ruby overtop my onyx! I attached a screenshot as well regarding that issue. Like you mentioned, since my war hammer has a nature bonus built in it already, respectively it accepted my brilliant cut amber as it is a nature gem, giving me that green glow. Definitely not my favorite visual effect, will definitely be looking back into the fire or lighting down the road on a war hammer that will allow those gems, those are sick.

Sweet, thanks everyone, I hope this thread helped some others as well as it did for me

UPDATE: Visual effects (fire, lightning, etc.) do not work on the new Great Axe skin “Pharaoh’s Curse” but work on my War hammer skin “Destroyer’s Wraith” or even other Great axe skins for example.

It would be nice if this was in writing somewhere. I Purchased the new “Pharaoh’s Curse” great axe skin for the sole purpose of applying a cool visual effect to go with it… that did not go as planned, were was the warning? Slightly disappointed. :pensive:

Here is my end result so far. I used a cut brilliant amber (any amber will produce same lightning effect) on my “Destroyer’s Wrath” war hammer skin which was purchased from the store, paired with my “Pharaoh’s Curse” great axe skin, also purchased from the store. Again I applied an elemental gem ( Ruby / Fire ) to the Great axe but no visual effects will show with this new skin that was just released.

Hopefully some insight here for everyone. Can we get a update that allows visual effects to work on the new “Pharaoh’s Curse” great axe skin New World! Was this forgotten?

Cheers all! :yum:
