Not necessarily. The trade-off of having to melee is having to dodge all of the incoming attacks and needing to move with the mob whereas a ranged DPS is basically free casting for most of the fight.
To be fair there’s no ranged free casting because no one takes ranged lol. Phalanx just hurts the rapier/IG builds.
What “phalanx” are we talking about?
It’s an old idea to give heavy shield builds a phalanx buff that costs mana but it was just that, a concept. Or you talking about something else?

How does phalanx stop you from evade light spamming ?
It doesn’t, but it blocks spike and pylon.
Could always use pylon burst I guess :p. That counts as a melee hit
Phalanx + Nature Mutation + Blood Offering makes healing fairly obnoxious.
With ranged damage builds potentially becoming more viable in Season 1, it might be worthwhile to tweak Phalanx a bit. Perhaps make it only reduce the damage by a percentage, only absorb a set number of projectiles, or just change it to something else entirely.
People should also understand that, outside of bows, muskets and throwing hatchets, many builds need air quotes around “ranged.” Mages using Flamethrower, Ice Spike, Void Blade, Oblivion, etc…as well as anyone using a Blundbuss, are going to spend quite a bit of the fight in melee or near-melee range. They’re going to face many of the same dangers as pure melee builds, but generally have a lot less crowd control, and will have some of their attacks absorbed by Phalanx.
