Gigabyte G1 GTX 980ti DEAD!

This happened after the 1.0.1 patch and after three crashes at queue (login screen) my Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 Ti G1 Gaming has finally DEAD at the third crash.

This premium card was running for several years without ever having any kind of problem, I used this card for gaming and deep learning many times before.
It never had any high temperature problems, the cooling is great and it was running around 70º C maximum at crashes time. The main board and tower was never > 40ºC.

I was playing in the closed and in the open betas and certainly had some crashes that were solved after nVidia driver update.

There were always some suspecting things about this game:

  • Very high GPU usage, around 100% when most of games is 90-95% or less.
  • Low FPS. With lowest settings I was getting around 55 FPS max at 1080p.
  • Most strange: FPS were changing from 40 to 55FPS every few seconds… even at login screen, that is really difficult to explain.
  • Hard freezes. I had many of them and it’s really strange having them nowadays… usually the game should crash but not freeze the entire computer.
  • High GPU usage or temperature while the game is minimized or backgrounded, even more than with the game maximized. I know this because the gpu fans were blowing harder when minimized.

What’s wrong with the game engine?

After 1.0.1 patch:

  • After a 600 player queue I got in the game and after several minutes I had the first crash: The screen was totally pink coloured and the computer was frozen. I rebooted.
  • After 20-30 minutes waiting at queue, the screen was white and the computer frozen. I rebooted.
  • Tried again, queue screen and after 5 minutes the next freeze. I don’t remember but maybe my screen was white painted again. I rebooted. The computer doesn’t start.

Tried several things and managed to start the computer using the integrated iGPU (i7 4790k) and the nVidia drivers not even detect the GTX anymore.

Perfect. I’m unemployed, my GPU was broken because a game, and the graphics cards are too expensive right now to buy a new one.

Thank you, New World. Now, what do I do next and how do I get a new card?

I stopped playing because of the crashes. Once your shit black screens don’t even attempt all the bs fixes. They’re temporary. There’s something within the game partnered with the GPU. Best to just call it quits and wait for a real fix. Otherwise you’re going to inevitably brick your gpu.

Maybe the reason of bricking is the 100% gpu usage stressing some weak soldering of the card, and the freezes (not crashes), were an early advice of that future failing. I will try unmounting my board to see if there is something I can to to recover it, like reballing… it’s a really good gpu yet… :frowning:

Darn that hurts to hear, I appreciate you posting this though. I’m experiencing freezes in the game every 2-10 minutes. I keep changing settings on computer and have tried several different things to try and fix it. For whatever reason I didn’t stop to think that maybe just maybe it could kill my card like yours. Granted my computer doesn’t get hot like that, hasn’t popped over 60C according to monitors, but still scary! Thank you for sharing!

Watch this people My New World Testing revealed something unexpected... This NEEDS to be fixed!!! - YouTube , even if your card hasn’t failed yet… You should get MSI Afterburner to check how your card is doing, and put a Power Limit below 100% to be on the safe side. Obviously that video is only about RTX 3090, but the problem seemingly happens even on my ancient GTX 780 so watch out honestly.

I totally agree with you, indeed even an ingame 60 FPS cap is not safe because strange behaviour at queues or minimized. A 90 or 95% cap should work perfectly, safe, and cooler… don’t risk your gpu.

Finally my 980ti was dead and I bought a rtx3070.
The new one now is running only at 30% because the cpu (4790k) is running at 100% (4 cores are not enought), and the max FPS is around 40-50 no matter if low or high detail…

So the next shopping will be cpu+mb+ram, preparing 1k €…

How expensive is this game…
