GPU Usage AMD 6900XT 5900X

Hello players,
I have gone through the methodical trouble-shooting already; uninstalling/reinstalling drivers (DDU), even reinstalled windows 11.

I’ve been trying to identify the root cause of low GPU usage at 1440p (native gsync monitor, tested other monitor same results). Running uncapped FPS at this resolution my GPU stays at ~50% usage, rarely spiking to 80%. Tested with other games like cyberpunk, AC without this issue. The GPU i have is a 6900XT from powercolor and an 5900x cpu. I am looking for anyone who can provide any insight or fix in regards to this issue — again I have done the routine systematic check (timespy, cinebench, etc) to make sure everything runs fine, not thermal throttled. I believe its a driver issue with NW and AMD possibly, though Ive read about Nvidia users having similar issues.

What I find odd is enabling Virtual Super Resolution (VSR AMD driver) I can run at higher resolutions like 8k where my GPU runs at 99% usage but my fps is obviously not great. What I am trying to do is run at native resolution (1440p) at my refresh rate of 165hz.

I did notice a post about AGS working with GPU manufacturers on optimizing drivers, I hope this is done before the big update lands as I was testing this same issue on the PTR in hopes of a fix.

Hello! :mage:

Welcome back to the forums! Long time no see! I understand you’re having low GPU usage while running the game in your current config (6900XT and 590X), but you’re able to ramp up the GPU usage by enabling VSR to run it on higher resolutions. I do wish to understand a little bit more about the issue!

Are you experiencing low FPS along with the low GPU usage while running the game at 1440p with your current refresh rate? Your specs are way above the recommended specs for the game to run smoothly! Please do let me know so I can assist you with this issue!

Thanks in advance!

I’ll be lurking around!

Greetings! Yes, I am experiencing lower than expected FPS due to GPU utilization being low; herein lies the problem, I cannot identify why GPU usage is not being forced fully at this resolution.
This is a snippet of in-game fps (uncapped) at my native resolution. I have a 165hz monitor.

Running at lower than native resolution, 1080p, the frames remain about the same, which I find odd.

whats gpu temps do you have? I also have rx6900xt and r7 5800x and @60 fps / 1440p my temps are already high on that specific game so that may be the cause. However this game its cpu intens so probably your gpu can reach 165 fps or more but not your cpu, thats why the gpu its not 99% but the cpu yes

Hi,
no this is not the case. I had already previously mentioned that my system is not thermal throttling. Temps are ~70c under load GPU, and 50c on my CPU at ~4.2GHz. I’ve already done my best to eliminate these things before posting here in case anyone found a solution. I posted images of my system running at 8k with 99% gpu usage as a reference. So, @albertramos902 , running your system at 1440p uncapped you also have low GPU usage/power and non-optimal frames? Am curious, and hopefully @distantefix has some good news.

It looks like you’re standing in town in all your screenshots. The game seems to have different modes where it acts differently according to where you are/what you’re doing. Adjusting graphics and resolutions I have noticed does almost nothing when in town, the FPS caps around 60 no matter the utilization. I assume because it’s not exactly an environment where you need to sit uncapped while staring at a storage. You have pretty much the same set up as I do, so if you run around in the wild you should get 190-220ish.

You should note that uncapped will probably feel stuttering and weird at times. The best way to solve this is to force the GPU to run at a certain frequency. If you allow it to run auto the game acts up and will just be unpleasant in some areas. Your numbers could be different but locking my core frequency min 2400 - max 2500, and memory 2212 (it might be unstable that high, 2012 is unusually perfectly fine). I personally have a slight undervolt, 1140mv I have my max, the temps never really exceed 70c.

Hope you find some use with that information.

Hi john
in that case we have very similar specs but not same situation.
@1440p my cpu 5800x it’s always between 75-83 c no matter what and the gpu temps fluctuates SO MUCH when playing this game. I play @60 fps as It’s enough for me in this game and already it gets super hot (85-90c) depending on the location or depending on the skills other players do (specially the ice gauntlet).
If i play uncapped im around 150-160 fps but the temperatures are never below 85c.
So, I’m happy playing at 60fps (62.5 exactly) and not getting high temperatures, BUT even with that cap my gpu goes crazy sometimes, where stutters happen sometimes, and high temperatures some other times.
So, my conclusion here (sorry for the long and confusing message):
the game its not optimized at all, and the spaghetti code it’s really a mess

Thanks for that info, the images I took were at settlement since taking them in OPR would be wearisome —the notable loss in gpu usage in towns does not coincide with outdoor game-play, oddly enough, there are zones on the outer edges of ebonscale that force gpu to hit 99% statically. I had previously attempted to force AMD to run at a frequency but my settings were not taking effect, running adrenalin as admin worked.

As this is a temporal solution to a more complex problem, I will mark your post as a solution and hope we can get some more feedback from @distantefix or other developer regarding this. Forcing higher than necessary clock speeds is not ideal.

This issue is not going away, and may be further exacerbated by the influx of new players at expansion patch reminiscent of launch era.

I run a 3080 and 5900x, and yeah… same thing. Whether it’s an OPR, a town, or just looking in the direction of a town… The FPS will drop anywhere from 20 to 100 and the CPU/GPU utilization goes down.

I can run out in the world sometimes with 140 to 200 FPS… Walk into everfall on a busy night and get 40 with my GPU at 50% usage.

I it’s annoying for sure. If it was only towns… I could probably try to look past it. But like you said, you get a similar effect in OPR or anywhere there’s more than like 15 players.

I was at the temple in front of tempest one time when the gear score train was going on down below me and my FPS tanked HARD. The train wasn’t even on my screen, and just the fact that probably 30 to 60 players are running by in the same zone not that far away, my FPS dropped by 50% or more. It’s a big problem.

I see someone has added FSR support into O3DE. So hopefully someday this makes it’s way back into NW.

AZoth is far removed from O3DE or even Lumberyard at this point, I imagine they’d have to implement it again.

The patches came from Amazon, in fact there was some fascination with a Horus statue in the pull request sample images.

I just looked, that’s a draft PR that is unfinished right now. Also, like 90% of commits on O3DE are Amazon employees.

I’m giving my opinion, I don’t think this has any reflection on what will come to New World or AZoth.

Hello Aeternum Dwellers,

I am sorry to hear you seem to be having issues with GPU Usage.

Here are some basic things you can check in order to troubleshoot this:

  1. Ensure your video drivers are up to date.
  2. Set Windows power settings to High Performance.
  • Press Windows + R, type “powercfg.cpl” into the Run window, and then press Enter.
  • Select the radio button next to the High performance power plan. You may need to click Show additional plans first.
  1. Adjust your in-game video settings. (sometimes just changing them back and forth will reset the issue)
  2. Clean boot Windows by following these instructions:
How to perform a clean boot in Windows (to reduce startup applications/Check for Malware).
  3. Reset your video driver software to the default settings.
  4. Check for evidence of overheating.
  5. Please verify the integrity of game with the Steam integrity check
How To run a Steam Integrity Check

If the issue persists after this, the scenario will require our tech team to look into your logs and follow up directly with other possibly sensitive account information that is best not posted on the forums so it would be best if you could please create a web ticket by going to Contact Us | Amazon Games.

I hope this helps and if not, do not hesitate reaching out to live support.

See you in Aeternum! :wolf:
