I really like the symmetry that was created in the GS tree between Onslaught and Defiance, both visually in the UI and in skill flavour.
As I’m sure you have noted, many sites/content creators have offered up suggestions on how to build a tank GS. Some of the builds that they have been suggesting are quite similar but have a big flaw in that it tends to ask the player to invest a point in utterly useless perks (keen posture/ swift onslaught) in the second Onslaught perk row, to have access to a better one (critical comeback) when the player wants to invest heavily in the Defiance tree. The inverse is not true for a player who invests heavily in the Onslaught tree but wants to have access to some Defiance perks as they can choose blade honing in the second Defiance row and still have a usable perk. To get my point across I have linked two trees so you can see the problem:
Onslaught focused build: New World Skill Builder - New World Database
- As you can see there is a usable option in the second Defiance row for someone who doesn’t invest in Defiance heavily (Blade Honing).
Defiance focused build: New World Skill Builder - New World Database
- As you can see there is no usable perk in the second Onslaught row as both perks rely on the player using a Onslaught skill to unlock their effects.
There are a few changes that could be made to open up the builds whilst retaining the symmetry that was envisioned. Here is an example of changes that could be made:
The reason behind swapping purifying and intimidating roar would just be to maintain the cohesion of symmetry. The relentless power perk in Onslaught is a 10 second buff and the Intimidating roar perk is also a 10 second debuff.
I hope what I wrote kind of makes sense. Thank you.
