Guild leader hacked via steam remote play

I have already spoken to amazon support on this matter. Judging by a quick search on here I’m not the only one to have had this happen in the past 24 hours.

I went for dinner to come back and find that steam-remote play was active. In the short time I had been gone, my gold and guild banks gold had been set to 0 and I was in a different town to when I logged out. Furthermore I was now paired to a device I don’t recognise, who’s MAC/ID appeared suddenly in my steam logs prior to me going for dinner.

When I requested to reset my password, the email sent from steam was in Russian.

I’ve got my steam/game logs as proof (and I’m sure amazon can check their end) but this is pretty scary.

I’ve scanned my PC for malware and root kits with nothing showing. One possibility is that my info was included in a data breach from another website, or one of the new world wikis has a breach, or someone from one of the public discords I’m part of has somehow found a tidbit of information that led them to find something within a leaked password database.

I’ve changed my password and added 2 factor authentification. I’m making this post to encourage other leaders to do the same, as this is almost certainly a targeted attack given that 40k on Thule is quite alot (server has 400 peak pop).

Just hoping to have the gold returned to the guild bank given the brazen nature of the attack.

They can’t even properly ban bots and you want them to give you gold? Good luck dawg. People who have been hacked also find themselves on other servers. Support tells them to wait until another token is available. Doesn’t Steam also default 2FA to your e-mail as soon as you make a Steam account?

I’m guessing this is something that needs to be handled by Steam support? At the very least something they should also be aware of.

But at the end of the day this game is on steam, and the hacker targeted a player for in game-currency. Steam won’t be able to help with that side. But I am of course going to contact steam too.

My account was old. I had recently updated the email on it, so apparently it did not have 2FA set up.

This is why I’m trying to raise awareness for anyone who hasn’t set it up to do so, as hackers are genuinely targetting people.
