Help, how do I counter Greataxe and Hatchet?

Mostly you’ll see GAxe players saying this to try to defend their weapon choice, which I understand. If you’re using IG it’s also being done in light armor with high intelligence and little/ no constitution and hit points. The way Great Axe moves, and the pulls, heals and damage output it offers, the only way a fight ends between those main weapons is in the caster’s death.

edit I really tried to find a counter to Great Axe, but in the end…like many have said, the only way to win against it is to use it yourself, so I’ve switched and respecced my attributes. At least weapon skill comes fast when you’re flagged, lol! :innocent:

Stop crying and grow some. Everything has its downsides and upsides, and you should not be winning a 1v1 head to head with someone built that way - you should have more value in a group fight on the other hand

Everything in life isn’t about balance. Get better or stop crying. Do you not see wars on twitch? Why every time is it the fire staff or ranged guys with the most damage? Just because people are bad and die flagged to GA doesn’t mean the build is “broken.” I suggest you get to a higher level and reevaluate because I was feeling the same was when I was level 20 on launch day, but guess what when you’re not bad at pvp or level 20 GA is nothing.

I feel like a lot of people don´t really have a whole lot of experience in PvP.

Pretty much every single ranged weapon can counter the great axe.

Ice Gauntlet - The wall snares you in place and you can not charge trough it
Fire Staff - Can dash away to maintain the distance (great axe can not catch up)
Life staff - Can buff armor to insane up to a point where ga becomes useless
Bow - Can dash back, constantly keeping a great distance between you and GA.
Musket - Can set traps to stop GA from coming to you in the first place

I dont know what to tell you other then there is a counter for everything. You just need to put the time and effort into actually reading your abilities.

actually with against all odds passive(10%damage for every enemy in 5 yards) you can get some crazy numbers in wars if they are stacked on flag… pop zerk run in melt stuff get out well you still have cheat death passive heal repeat.

Hey thanks for adding valuable info on this thread I appreciate it.
Out of those that you mentioned, what are some good pairings?

i like running IG with hatchet while pvping in the world.

The IG slow + AOE / damage from exiting ice block dmage is insane, then if you need to get away… switch to hatchet, pop berzerk, heal and kite until your IG is off cooldown. The key is maintaining distance until you’re off cooldown.

I can literally one shot a GA player if he jumps on me inside my AOE and i get my ice block off.

You can also run with fire staff for insane damage.

get gud?
If not my hatchet is coming for you! hahaha
PvP is great guys! I don’t know why I didn’t play like this sooner!

I build my combos the following:

First I check which stats best suit what I want to play. Obviously for Musket (as example) it is Dexterity. Then I go to Attributes and (check*) which other weapons scale with this stat. You could go with spear, bow, rapier, even hatchet.

Then I look at which weapon gives me the most use for the way I play. For example on the musket I want to maintain my range and shoot from away. I check the weapon mastery for all the dex weapons and I look at Crowd control or other means that can help me escape. The spear has a knockdown, which is extremely usefully for escaping, but the bow has a dash backwards and so does the hatchet.

You can pair a lot of weapons and combinations, there is so much variety. You can pair any ranged weapon with the Spear and the Spear with any speed buff (hatchet, rapier).

Try out all of the weapons, find out which ones you like / dont like. Then level all of the skills and change them out, as the meta changes.

I have had continued luck with Fire Staff and Rapier. Both offer some great mobility. The big axe swings are seen a mile away, so simply doge or use riposte from rapier. Get distance and nuke again. The rapier passives give so much more mobility than the hatchet with no cooldown.

Have I just been lucky or what am I missing in pvp fights?

You don’t. even if they’re pretty bad, you’ll still lose. if they have heavy armor and weapon masteries you cant win unless you have a similar build.

ranged damage is terrible, even if you can keep your distance, berserk heals more damage then you’ll be able to do and it also makes them immune to most CC, if you run a weapon with a stun, good, but they can just wait for it to pop berserk and its wasted.

great axe hits super hard and is better at everything than any weapon, games no different than beta, same meta bs with terrible balance.

hatchet is good for spamming, its not good against pros. its only dps spike skills are multihit, which means people can move out of it, or put it on cooldown after one hit with an interupt.

it has no cc, no spike dmg. Its a pretty good Easy weapon, but later on, or versus better opponents it sees less use.

the weapons do different things.

spear has superior range and cc
great axe has better control, chase, and aoe
sword n shield is all around with defense.
hammer, mostly just cc.

I don’t think high end players have much trouble with hatchet users, they are probably most annoyed by the revive on death, and run away boost.

So I picked great axe and hatchet out the gate and I’m just going sitting here like… what I do?

put full int and convert axe damage to ice lol

Berserk lasts for 15 seconds and barely a cooldown ? The buffs only last 9 seconds and then once ended you have to wait another 15 seconds to activate it. Against ranged dps, you can be dead in that time. The only way a hatchet player can catch another player is if they have the GAxe skills to charge u down because haste with hatchet for 8 seconds isnt good.

The hatchet was nerfed by removing stunlock. I have fought lower level players and whilst they have been able to do high dmg to me I was having to break them down overtime a longer time. Using Beserk etc. Having said that I am stuck with gear 15 levels below my char level due to lack of amour and weapons for Str-Hatchet and lack of G’s

sword/shield, hammer user in heavy here … no problems in solo pvp against 1vs1, 1vs2 and sometimes 1vs3 (if they are really bad…) …
some say rapier/ice is op, some others greataxe/ hammer… and many other weaponcombos too.
all in all, seems fine to me …
and btw, i really enjoy open world solo pvp because scaling works perfekt, i can beat ppl up to 10lvl so far…

I easily beat them as light staff great axe heavy armour build full focus amber gem. Or even hatchet amber gem.
Even beat them as light armour bc light staff actually start to hit hard with an extra 20% damage.

Greataxe can def keep up with firestaff. the Bloodlust combo makes it near impossible to get them off you once they their and charge moves the same distance as burnout except its instant without a horrible cast time.

It’s not like Great Axe/Hatchet is imbalanced, it’s just super easy to play, and most people go that way.
As a bow user I find it very hard to counter their gap closers and seemingly indefinate “grit” state. I feel like I need to be 10x time a better player to kill GA/H user and I think it’s a good thing for the game, because it motivates me to be that.
