How to bring shields on par with dodge

Rework block stability as follows:

Blocking will no longer damage your stamina, instead your stamina drains every second you block.

Every shield can block an infinite number of hits, same as dodge can avoid an infinite number of hits at one time.

Block stability will decrease the stamina lost during blocking:

Round shields - 15 stamina lost/sec

Kite shields - 10 stamina lost/sec

Tower shields - 5 stamina lost/sec (final value with bonuses from heavy armor and tower shield)

Values mentioned above can be adjusted based on testing

This way players using shields can block multiple attacks but cannot spam block indefinitely

Breaking a block will only be available for certain weapons, 2 handers mostly like GA and WH.

Armor breaker is one, execute is another. Breaking a block is guaranteed if the target has less than 50% stamina and will make the target drop to the ground. If the target has more than 50% stamina, these abilities will apply a debuff for 5 seconds that will decrease blocking stability by 50%.

Weapons that do not have an ability to break the block will have mobility and can focus attacks on the target until the blocking enemy stamina is exhausted ( hatchet, spear, rapier, sword and other fast attacking weapons)

Reaching 0 stamina will cause a stagger as normal

AOE abilities will bypass blocking as normal

This change is mainly focused on tanks, which seem to get the short end of the stick lately. While a dodge will still be superior most of the time, having the option to block multiple attacks at once will be a good change. While fighting multiple opponents they can still flank you, but a good tank will try to keep his enemies in front of him, and accept the lack of mobility in exchange of becoming an immovable object for a few seconds.

Good idea, but 5 stamina per second is a lot, let’s say 1 stamina per second if the shield is up, and 5 stamina per second after getting hit (for 3 seconds). And after the dodge, players playing with a shield have a buff of + 50% to stamina regeneration

I dont like idea since it would make blocking to strong. Like 2 tower shield tanks could block entrance vs 10ppl for 20+sec? No. Would be ok if mayb you don’t have 100% chance to block. If change would be like:

Round shields - 60%
Kite shields - 75%
Tower shields - 90%

That you block is succesfull then yea. It would make sense since you can block for long time but some will get through and you migjth be forced to move back.

If we would have chance to block then stamina can be same for all types of shields i think.

I was about to say that you are right and maybe a 50% healing debuff while blocking is needed to make aoe more potent.

However, shockweave, gravity well, the bombs from bb and musket will make any tank move/dodge(less stamina - less blocking) or risk to be stunned, staggered or take heavy damage.

I like your idea as well, however round kite shields are a bit underwhelming with a block chance. Any way we could improve on that?

So one guy with a shield can be totally invulnerable to like 20 people hitting him for like 10 to 20 seconds? Or can totally avoid boss mechanics and strike combos for 10 seconds at a time?

No. It makes sense to take stamina damage per strike.

Also, not that it matters much, but you missed or forgot that musket has a perk that breaks stamina, and is pretty good at exhausting mobs that block.

It’s the start of a very good idea but I do think it’s flawed. There needs to be SOME counter play (other than just a few abilities).

Also, the longer you hold block, the faster stamina should drain. Blocking should be tactical and timed, not just held while getting wailed on.

Also need to punish going into exhaustion (grey stamina) more… And not just for blocking but dodging too.

Then we’re getting somewhere.

Good feedback guys, it’s clear there are some things I did not think about, but it’s good to know people are on board with giving shields more love.

The idea was to make shield users have a unique play style and bring them closer to the dodge mechanic in terms of usefulness, not make them OP

If anyone has ideas to improve this or a different idea altogether, feel free to jump in

Blocking with a tower shield should make you literally invinicble from the front regardless of stamina.

Change my mind.

Also… plate needs 95% slash damage resist. A fucking arrow isnt going to pierce platemail unless its shot out of a trebuchet, and a sword only works if its the right kind of sword and with thrusts.

Magic.

Kite shields should be removed from the game anyway, who uses them?

Cant that same magic be used to defend?
