How to demonstrate that Cloud Computing is a lie - the Amazon way

All the pitches about cloud being better than traditional server infrastructure because when you have too many users you can just flip the switch and increase your capacity in an instant - they just got flushed down the toilet.

Amazon, you own AWS. Why is it so hard for you to flip that switch you keep selling to me in all cloud computing webinars and courses? Not so easy, is it? I guess it is all a lie.

Not how the cloud works

i know, but that is exactly how cloud promo materials, ads and elearning courses on cloud for managers explain it. i find it funny.

take any AWS foundations course if you don’t believe me.

As somebody that works in the field of cloud computing (Google Cloud though). Either you don’t understand that you can’t just magically fix anything with the cloud (the software side needs to scaled and be made to work with scaling constructs). Or you’re just trolling.

In any case this is like saying: I don’t need a seatbelt 'cause I’m not crashing.
Better feedback would have been: Amazon, why don’t you put up more servers?

Scaling hardware isn’t everything as I already eluded. You also have the software end. But besides that, you also have customer support and various other factors (i.e. human constraints).

You can’t just scale to infinity and beyond. And those courses you mention? They mention the same thing and if you actually did the courses, you would understand that your comments make (very) little sense.

Peace.

mate, I have worked with AWS and Azure for years too (although, personally I use exclusively bare-metal servers as of late). I know how it works, you are missing the point.

Yes, I am trolling marketing teams of cloud services. Because that is literally how they sell it - the magical solution that scales to infinity with a flip of a switch. I did take Amazon courses on Coursera where if you answer the question - what are the benefits of cloud vs traditional server infrastructure you MUST CHOOSE the option “it can easily scale if you experience a surge of users” or you fail the test. Probably you took engineer-level courses while I took management-level courses (because with the latter it is more of sales pitch than actual education) so I understand the confusion.

Amazon owns almost 10% of all data centers in the world by the way and cannot easily scale it would appear. So yes, either they decided to save costs and spend all their money on streamers instead of user experience or the cloud is not working as is being advertised
