How to play with a real tank

Typical answers here from Tank disccusion.

Tank needs to do damage
Tank needs to DPS
Tank needs to dodge

Etc…

How to use a tank, that was the purpose of my first post, but I kept it short cuz I was expecting these usual replies.

In fights I’ve been, I don’t see the rush, necessity to backstab. The tank aggros, the boss follows the tank, everyone backstabs, do crits all the time. Wam bam g’night m’mam.

Instead, melee DPS just goes between me and the boss, I have the aggro, the boss does heavies and hits everyone in front, and me, just lose a bit of stamina. Healer have to rush, etc…etc…

On a tough boss, when I can take 2-3 hits, we could be two tanks, to exchange the aggro while the stamina recovers, and the boss never has to damage anyone else.

Nobody uses tight spot, to block a boss. No reflex to go inside a house, to use the doorframe has a single point of entry. Etc…

Sometimes, it happens, I can behave like a real tank, and it’s a pleasure to see the fight finish quickly. Like the 2nd Winter Warrior quest, in Ebon. I go there, someone else is there. It’s obvious I’m a tank, I’m in xmas gear. Haha. No, my tower shield. The melee DPS tries to go in front of me. I get the aggro, I try to put the Warrior toward me, the melee DPS just dies.

I finish the Warrior alone. It’s tough to kill a tank, it just takes forever to kill something big.

Those are the things I wanted to talk about.

There are not many true tanks left in game. Its just Melee DPS in heavy armour with reasonable constitution.

You can tell them a mile off when they can’t keep boss aggro and are not using the shield buffs.

Which kind of annoys me when I specfically ask for “LF Tank” and this is why alot of DPS actually just charge into and start smashing the boss because why wait for a fake or useless tank who cant get aggro…

You better pray they never add DPS meters or actual difficult encounters because this post is embarrassing to read.

Yep, I apologize for that. It must be quite embarrassing to read something difficult to understand. completely agree. Thanks for your very constructive and informative input.

Schmuck.

If the melee DPS died. It’s cause you suck as a tank. If the healer needs to use all his heals to keep you up and is not able to spend heals to keep melee DPS alive. Then you seriously suck as a tank. I played healer many times in dungeons. I can keep both the tank and melee DPS alive no matter what the situation.

Give the bozo a little credit.

DPS are very much accountable for their own behavior, and for most encounters a DPS should be able to keep themselves alive (assuming a good tank) almost entirely with potions (not that they should have to). Of course, often times tanks just rotate the boss around for no reason and get your melee killed, which is probably why OP said to avoid melee DPS (ya know, project blame to others). A REAL tank loves melee damage dealers because they have some of the highest consistent DPS output in a PvE setting, especially with how janky hitboxes can be on some mobs. A REAL tank doesn’t need the healer to focus all of their efforts on the tank because they know how to block and dodge to mitigate their own incoming damage.

It is silly that OP claims to know the makings of a real tank and then give a horribly flawed synopsis.

Hey schmuck, seems we are on first insult basis here, it’s obvious you are just trolling this discussion. So, well, buzz off?

The purpose of this topic was to talk about how to best use a tank, to know how to use a tank.

All the mistakes I wrote are very common, if not the norm.

A tank wouldn’t move backwards if we kept the third position view when the boss was right in our face to see his mechanics, to be able to dodge once in a while.

A tank would go backwards IF ALL THE MELEE WERE BEHIND the boss. I mean, com’on, that’s basic DPS 101, back = critical, back = more damage.

A tank wouldn’t go backwards if he wasn’t easy to push in this game.

Schmuck, if you are so good in games, how the heck do you not know that? Unless you hate to play a tank in general (which is very common). Being a tank is an attitude, generally to fix people’s attitude.

But that’s just basic tanking 101 from any MMO out there.

Don’t feel bad, believe it or not there once was a time I wasn’t great at games either.

That was a long time ago but I believe you, too, will get good some day. :hugs:

You would THINK these things make sense and a tank “would” do them, but they often don’t and people like me need to pull off the boss and lower performance until the tank manages to sort their shit out. Luckily none of the content in New World is tough and so there’s no real DPS checks, but it’s painful as a high-performer to sacrifice personal performance in any setting.

If New World has taught us anything, it’s that MMO kids struggle with action combat.

Pouhahahahaha! I was drinking coffee while reading this, now I need a napkin… Good one.

Well, that’s normal. For example, when you achieve 200 in skinning, everyone in the chat will reply: “Nothing special there”. While it’s not even 10% of the players that accomplished that right now.

Cuz it’s the basic 90-9-1 rule. 90% are casual, 9% will participate, play a lot, 1% will create content, with companies and activities.

It’s normal that the majority of the 10% has achieved something, but for the 90%, it is far from that. Like people not understand a world with 300 concurrent players at night has 3-4k players in the world. It’s a basic 10:1, 8:1 ratio of activity vs concurrent in busy any IT service. Drops to 20:1 in casual ones.

So, the purpose of my post was to see where it would take us, me, to explain a bit more about how to play a tank. If it was interesting, I would spend more time to make a good guide. But if it’s going to be received like this, I won’t.

What a great opportunity for discussion!

25.9% of people that bought and own the game have achieved 200 skinning. New World peaked at 913,027 concurrent players. Even if we go with the 20:1 casual ratio, that means that about 20million copies sold worldwide, meaning roughly 5 million players would have the achievement. Current New World peaks at about 120k concurrent users, times 20 is 2.4M active users.

So, according to your numbers and official steam information, almost twice as many people have that achievement than total world population that logs in on a regular basis.

Doesn’t seem very special to me. (But grats all the same!)

While I get this post is well intentioned, the only take away here should be play what is fun.

That being said, the optimal tank build is 300 STR and the skill of knowing how to manage threat and stamina, everything else is just sub-optimal and translates to slower progression. At the moment, there is nothing you can’t tank with 150 CON with the right strategy that you can tank with 300 CON.

The grit perk and extra damage is worth much more than any other terrible perk from the con tree that you don’t even need.

Oh boy another tank gatekeeping thread. Disclaimer: I play tank in every MMO and have been playing online games since they existed, bla bla. This post is directed at PvE which appears to be what you’re discussing.

Anyway

A HP sponge is not the only “real tank”. A tank is a player who can hold aggro and survive against an arbitrary number of mobs/bosses that allow for clearing content.

  • A HP sponge is a real tank
  • A lifesteal tank is a real tank
  • A healtank is a real tank
  • A high damage tank is a real tank
  • An avoid tank is a real tank
  • A mitigation tank is a real tank

The viability of any of these options depends on the game and player skill.

In New World, based on my 1300 hours playing a tank, trying every build I can and clearing all end game content hundreds of times - the most optimal tank for the best utility is

  • A damage tank with SS/Hammer

Why? No content in the game requires max HP. No content in the game benefits from max HP. Tanking in this game is done with blocking and mitigations. Things that make you a better tank in this game include proper skill/passives, proper skill modifying perks, proper gear for stacking mitigations and fortify. You want crit as a tank so you can pop keenly fortified. You want a healthy bit of a damage stat so you can easily keep aggro for very high glass cannon DPS so you can clear dungeons in 20m or less. You want to be a fourth DPS on bosses that require zero tanking for some (Taxodius, Marl, Cilla) or all (Chardis) of the fight.

An HP sponge works fine but is not optimized for this game. This may change when Mutators are released, but I doubt it based on the existing game mechanics. If you know what skills to block, what skills to avoid, and what skills to block->skill iFrame you don’t need HP. I’ve considered switching to 300STR for extra damage/grit for this reason.

I think I was posting while you posted but

The grit perk and extra damage is worth much more than any other terrible perk from the con tree that you don’t even need.

Pretty much this. The only thing that might benefit from high CON is if you want to get smacked by 10+ mobs for a long period of time but … that situation doesn’t exist if you are the one doing pulls or if you have good dps.

Even if you have 10 mobs hitting you, one hammer shockwave with the right talents/gear and you basically heal for more than your life total, apply aoe rend, and cc mobs.

This made me laugh. This is also the reason I run sword/board and hatchet.

I’m pretty confident you’re a shit or at least an inefficient tank. There’s no reason for you to be tanking with 200+ Con What do you need so much health for?? Are you that bad you can’t survive without 15k hp?

i absolute totally dont agree with you.

200 CON. Thats the way togo. no point more no point less.
If you need a HP bumb → take Consti Bufffood. But if you are a half decend player you will not need it.

Second for your “Guide” here is a little hint:
You DONT need “Defiant Stance” it is useless in PvE AND PvP.
Take a Hatchet as your second weapon while tanking group contend. Switch to Hatchet → berserk for AoE Taunt → switch back to S&S.
WAY better then WH or GA.

Third:
DONT fucking skill the “Defender” tree. There are only a handfull important Notes in that tree: “Sturdy Shield, Sturdy Grid, Elemental Resistance, Recuperation and Shield Bash.” everything else is useless. Shield Rush is half decend and Final Blow works as a filler note to get to Recuperation.
Go into the Swordmaster tree and get the Elite Perk “Leadership”
It is WAY WAY stronger for your group then anything else you can do.

But you are right. You dont need to stand inside the heal circel if you are not below 50% HP.

My goodness, the mansplaining is in full swing here. A tank with DPS, blablabla

PVE this, PVP that, buzz off.

With the best config, in your mind, a player can be great or very bad, if he can’t play.

And with the worst config, in your mind, a player can be great or very bad too.

You guys like a tank that holds aggro and you stay in between the tank and the boss, getting hit by the boss nonetheless. #Slowclap

You guys complain if the tank doesn’t hold aggro while you still carry your weapon with carnelian in it. #Slowclap

Anyway, we are far from a constructive discussion now, you frigging trolls.
