In-game Racism, and what is being done

Wait, this is the racism of which you speak?

I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if this is racism. I’m sorry to make a monkey out of you, but your really monkeying around with this one. Do you know what an idiom is? This is just a case of monkey see, monkey do. It’s a nothing burger. Now this monkey business has been more fun than a barrel of monkeys and I’m sorry to be such a cheeky monkey, but if every time you see the word monkey you think ‘black people’ then it’s high time to admit that you are a racist and should seek help.

Just saying.

So… calling someone an asshole. This is definitely abusive.

Really not surprised why you would defend someone being abusive.

Oh sure, the guy who called the OP a monkey was just being nice.

I use the word monkey quite a bit. Usually to describe a monkey. I’m not concerned that this may be offensive to anyone. If all you do is use the word as an idiom with people you know, around people you are sure aren’t going to feel abused by it, and don’t actually go around calling other people you donm’t know monkeys, in particular you don’t go around calling certain people monkeys, you’re all good.

We are all aware that the usage of the word monkey is fine. When you’re not calling someone a monkey. But this case? It’s so obviously intended to be abusive I’m astounded anyone feels the need to call the OP out as some sort of flag waver.

They got called a monkey. Obviously that’s going to fucking upset them. I’d be fucking livid if someone called any of my friends who are not white a monkey.

Did I miss something, my nekker?
Edit: if you think his answer was no asshole answer, I have no hope for you

I’ve heard people call others monkeys A LOT without it having to do with race. It’s used to insult someone’s intelligence, as a monkey is compared to a non-evolved human in terms of intelligence. “It’s so easy a trained monkey could do it,” or “a monkey could beat the market” are things people may say to describe a task requiring no brains to do.

Calling someone a monkey can also be intended as a racial slur. But in the context the OP gave, it seems much more to insult someone for being dumb, i.e. leading people the wrong way.

I’ve seen some racist BS in this game.

I roll my eyes, think less of the person, and move on.

(As to whether the OP’s example is racism is about 30/70 chance… humans being degraded for perceived incompetence or frequently called monkies regardless of whether their skin color is known.)

If you get all butthurt about it, you invite more of it.

Sorry to throw a monkey wrench on what you are saying but he didn’t call him a monkey, he used the idiom ‘follow the monkey’. Context matters, whether you know someone or not is irrelevant. Don’t be fooled by monkey talk, it’s there in black and white. So take this monkey off your back and lighten up.

Ah yes, it’s absolutely fine to degrade someone so long as we can assign a 30/70 statistical chance to it that suggests it wasn’t intended to be racist, when the avatar the player being abused has dark skin…

Sure, it’s all good then. The world is right, so long as we can degrade others without any consequence. If they just so happen to actually not be white and we’ve just called them a monkey, it’s just fine because there’s a 30% chance it wasn’t intended to be racist.

Do you lot actually think about what you type before you hit your keyboard?

Dear lord please bring back old Call of Duty chatrooms. Not sure if this post was to get attention, but how does anyone know what the color of your skin is? Please stop acting like you’re the victim because someone on the internet hurt your feelings. If you feel like you’re being targeted, please use the in-game report option and not bring this to the forums.

There is no such idiom as “follow the monkey”. You’ve just made that up on the spot.

He called him a monkey.

All I can say is sorry. It must be epically exhausting to not only experience this racist shit in real life, but in game as well. AGS needs to respond harshly to any bigotry in game or on the forums. And yes, to anyone who is black being called a monkey is a long time well known racist slur. Those who don’t know it are the ones who don’t get it and probably use it without realizing its origin.

I hope you can get some sort of response from the devs on this. I’ve had to turn off global chat because of toxicity, racism, and sexism. I figured it was just part of MMOs but that shit really needs to stop. It reflects badly on the community, on AGS, and it drives good players of color, women, and non-binary genders away.

Anyone who thinks they should respond to my reply with “grow a spine” or “grow thicker skin” needs to “grow a brain” - This isn’t SJW nagging. We’re all human beings just trying to enjoy our time in a game. Just accept everyone’s differences and go about playing w/o spewing bigotry based statements and labels.

You’re trying too hard to look for racism.

I do think, though I don’t think the concept is universal.

“there’s a possibility it is racially motivated, therefore it must be racism!”

(You lot do know that the Brits finally also moved to “innocent until proven guilty” like…35 years ago, right?)

Yes, I just made it up… on the spot… and the person who’s comment is fifth in this very thread time travelled to copy me.

I’m sure you know every idiom ever created.

i am a person of no color.

china is not a race.

They have forced people to change name for having ‘fart’ in it because it might be viewed as ‘morally unacceptable’ to some individuals. If anything they are oversensitive.
