Invasion Freezing

Had a few crashes in WF today. Multiple other players in my area frozen and unfrozen at the same time. It seems that those further than ~30 meters were not affected.

At the end of the video I have two deaths, which show a completely separate bug that has been in the game for a while. It’s a bug that affects the respawn times in wars and invasions. Your game slows down to 2 fps whenever you’re on the death screen and it causes your respawn to be longer than it should. The only fix for this is to restart your game so if you’re doing a lot in the war then its actually better to restart MID WAR rather than to have your respawn time effectively double.

  • First death I died at 12:39 remaining in the invasion, the next respawn is at 13:06 so I should have ~33 seconds before I can respawn. When the timer pops up it shows 29 seconds, but the respawn didn’t come up for another 52 seconds! (60 seconds after death)
  • Second death I died at 2:26 remaining in the invasion, the next respawn is at 1:51 so I should have ~35 seconds before I can respawn. When the timer pops up it shows 32 seconds (similar difference as the first one), but the respawn didn’t come up for another 59 seconds! (64 seconds after death)

I also have “Bandwidth Mode” set to “High”.

Again, as you can see in the video this is not my system that is crashing. None of my CPUs ever reach 100%. You can actually see a large decrease amongst all cores during the crash.

Both these bugs NEED to be a priority in the upcoming bug fixing month if not sooner. Could we have an update on these bugs? @DoJoDan

Also from left gate on WF on the 26th at 10pm, Lila Mariposa froze twice.

We saw the same thing @Prasinos333 did, with the CPU usage actually going down rather than up during the freeze. Her hardware specs are: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, 32 GB RAM. She was running all low graphics during this invasion and continued to experience freezing.

(This video contains two crashes, One at 11 seconds and the second at 55 seconds.)

Same thing in 3v3 and OPR can happen. Fix your game.

MD invasion. We lost… Froze 7 min before the end… Mind to help? thank you.

Yes, as BunnyASF said, Mourningdale at 9pm was (in my opinion) lost because of the dual crashes happening on both right gate and middle gate at the same time. Some people were frozen all the way until the end, having to restart their games to get back in. It started at 7 minutes left in the invasion and lasted the entire rest of the invasion for some people. It doesn’t seem like anyone was recording this one from the crashing perspective, sadly, but we do have one from the walls and inside the fort. (Obviously not as helpful.)

Just in general, it’s rare to not get a freeze and crash at least once an invasion at this point. Obviously some are much shorter than others, with some lasting significantly less time, as well as happening earlier in the invasion, but it’s still quite frustrating to run invasions with these issues.

Again, we’re happy to help with literally any debugging required. We’re working on getting more people setup with the capability to record.

We’ve continued to crash, but we have some videos this time with CPU usage graphs on this time.

From Lila Mariposa, 08/28, Brightwood at 11pm.

Lila's Hardware specs AMD Ryzen 5 3600

GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER

32 GB RAM

Wired internet connection

My crashes from tonight, 08/29, First Light at 10:30. I crashed twice. The first crash lasted a full minute. At about 30 seconds, I got the windows non responsive screen, but let it sit. It appears that when I died in game, my game immediately came back, but it’s hard to tell.

The second crash appeared to happen at the exact same time as the 2nd skull spawning on middle gate. I’m unsure if that’s related, but it seems important to mention.

In both recording you can pretty clearly see the CPU usage per core and in both cases when frames aren’t being rendered the CPU goes down quite significantly. When the frames are being rendered, you can see it go up slightly, but it doesn’t seem to max out any single core.

My Hardware specs Ryzen 7 2700X

16GB RAM

RX480

Wired internet connection

Obviously this is continuing to happen and we’re continuing to compile videos of it happening. Please let us know if you need anything else, we are happy to help and would LOVE to get this resolved.

Here are the respawn times along with the first video’s timestamps:

  • 10:38 Respawn
  • 10:34 Spawn 3
  • 10:28 (0:05) - Crash
  • 10:14 Spawn 4
  • 9:54 Respawn & Spawn
  • 9:34 Spawn 6
  • 9:14 Spawn 8
  • 9:10 (1:23) - Death Screen, Instant Respawn
  • 9:10 Respawn
  • 9:04 Mid Head

Since your death lined up with a respawn it’s hard to tell when exactly you died. If you have another recording in which you died we could probably know for sure if dying “fixes” your character.

Yeah. It’s hard to tell for sure! It’s been a theory we’ve been thinking about for a bit, so we’ll have to see and we’re planning on getting some more data on that. Thanks for those specific times!

Sounds more or like what happened to me. My game froze for a good 10 seconds during a Mourningdale invasion yesterday, in Dry Tree.

Thank you. This helps seeing the memory, cpu, etc. during the freeze/pause.

Thanks Jake. Neo is helping me so we can figure out what this is…
Might be helpful if someone with high end-system like Lila Mariposa captures ETW’s as well.

Yup! I’m working on getting her setup with it as well and I will keep you and Neo updated!

I’m confused, I thought Wars & Invasions would be getting their own instances… Is that no longer a plan of action?

Sadly, this does not fully prevent it (and we have some other theories above, but nothing concrete.)

We’ve recently had a lot of cases where people even this far on the stairs (red arrow) are still crashing with the rest of the gate. It is possible they saw the corruption spawn animation, but it’s not really possible to have everyone play even further up on the stairs. (and most likely something to do with the server side)

I’m hopeful with the new information they can figure out an actual solution

Not really related to this thread, but I see you made a post.

They will.

@JakeL I think it may actually be relevant. The lag, game crashes in Invasions has been going on for a considerably long time. The convention of thought on this was that if your server had wars simultaneously, then this was the root cause. however we’ve seen these incidents still occur without concurrent wars in progress. So it seems logical that creating “instances” for Invasions in addition to wars would or should be the answers. It seemed as though AGS was working in this direction. Unfortunately it appears as though these efforts have stalled. To now see Dev’s asking the community to help them solve this long standing lag/crash issue, makes me wonder if they’ve given up. The “Instances” certainly seemed like “The” answer.

I’ve had this crash on servers with varying levels of performance. Crashes at max capacity & crashes at half capacity. Creating instances for these events will certainly help overall performance. It could help, but it’s unlikely to solve this issue. Who knows, perhaps a future version they’re actively working on doesn’t have this problem.

I think what the developers main goal was to detach the wars from the open world so that it doesn’t see a performance drop during these events. It should help isolate performance issues with wars and invasions themselves which this seems to be one of them.

I just wanted to mention that this has been happening on El Dorado for about the past month. It’s usually a pretty big chunk of people and they will either crash fully (game closes and have to reopen) or will freeze and come back like some of the videos above.

This continues to plague invasions. I am on US West; El Dorado and have had the same situation on multiple invasions.

Last night (09/05) it was the back gate that had multiple people freeze (more than 5) and either drop to desktop or force-end-task as they were stuck. I attended two invasions last night and can’t remember which one it was, but I think it was the 8PM Brightwood Invasion.

Tonight (09/06) it was the mid-gate in front. More than 5 players at the same point in the invasion. 7PM Restless Shore Invasion.

We have also noted that if you are in a group at the time of the Invasion invite, if you accept the invite, it will place you in a group… then automatically kick you right back out. This has happened several time. We now prep for invasions by making sure we leave groups a few minutes before invites can go out.

Yep I was shot calling mid tonight on Eld and my wife and I both hard froze and had to task mngr force close. Then I froze another 2 times but didn’t have to force close.
