Invasion Freezing

No, never in Open World. I am bow, stand (if in back like last night) on the rocks well outside corruption to get a better angle for my shots.

I think every time I froze last night (6) it was while taking a bow shot. Perhaps the issue is folks (mage, bow, musket) firing into corruption spawn before complete spawn?

Bandwidth Mode: Medium
Video Quality: High

I included my graphical settings in the video. I change a few settings around depending on what I’m doing or where I am but usually I’m playing at all “Low” settings with a resolution of 1920x1080.
Here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • Limited to Invasions
  • Game freezes shortly (~5-10 seconds) after the corrupted spawn circle appears.
  • Affects a large numbers of players.

Depends on Distance from Corrupted Spawn.
Here is a map of the most recent invasion I was in with a rough estimate of the distance between important points:

I haven’t heard of anyone’s game freezing while on the siege weapons or just the wall in general. In my recording at 0:27 the player “Ciera” in my group has their game freeze along with multiple other players at the gate. However, I and others at my gate received no performance hit. So it seems that if you are further than 45 meters away from the corrupted spawn point then your game will not freeze. After that it’s kind of hard to narrow down but I would suspect that if you close enough for the spawning animation to render then your game is susceptible to crash. This also makes sense as I’ve noticed that a lot more players’ game will freeze if the active spawn is the closer of the two possible locations.

Other things I’ve noticed myself but cannot confirm:

  • Happens on every server
  • Doesn’t happen on some territories. For example, I have been in multiple invasions on CoS cutlass keys and it rarely if at all happens. It’s also the only territory on that war time slot (7 PM EST). Possibly other events are contributing?

Just to supplement this, Castle of Steel only had one invasion today, 9PM Ebonscale, no other wars at the same time, and we had middle gate fully crash at least once. (With some smaller crashes I can’t remember off the top of my head.) No one on the gate appeared to be recording, but I was recording from the walls. Obviously not very helpful, but I’d be happy to upload it.

It’s extremely hard to tell from our perspective what is actually causing it, but right now I don’t think it’s due to other events like wars happening at the same time. (And it’s hard to tell if the distance to the corrupted spawn is the key here, as Weaver’s Fen invasions in the past had seen crashes on the stairs, which should be far enough away…)

Server wise, I know for sure it’s happening on Castle of Steel, Maramma, and Valhalla. Can’t confirm any others.

Actually the stairs in the back are close enough for the spawn circles to render and are about 35 meters away from the closest spawn. I would be surprised if someone on the stairs crashed after the corruption spawns on the farther back locations.

The only reason why I bring up other wars is due to overall server performance dipping which could be and has been in the past a contributing factor.

Just keeping everyone updated, we continued to have crashes and freezes during our invasions tonight.

At 9PM at Reekwater tonight, we had multiple freezes and full crashes on the back gate and front middle gate.

During Monarch’s Bluffs at 10PM EST, front left gate froze a couple of times and we had mid gate fully crash.

Mourningdale at 11 was quite bad as well, having a ton of lag (skipping around for lots of players), crashes, and freezing.

Sadly, we didn’t get any videos. No one who was recording were on the correct gates, but obviously we’ll keep trying and keep you updated.

We had some in Mid and Back Freeze in Yesterday’s (08/23) Morningdale Invasion. I did not freeze but most of those around me did.

Happened at 16:25 (wave 4): NewWorld - Valhalla - Invasion - Morningdale - 2022/08/23 - YouTube
My video settings are in the video towards the end of the wave/chapter (NewWorld - Valhalla - Invasion - Morningdale - 2022/08/23 - YouTube). FPS is enabled, however New World covers it up in invasion, so not sure if it is helpful.

PC SPECS

I have 3 monitors, game plays in Display 1 ( SAMSUNG 49-Inch CHG90 144Hz Curved Gaming Monitor (LC49HG90DMNXZA))

I play in mostly low settings as seen in the video above, because the PC is too dang loud on anything higher, and visually it doesn’t seem to change much.

Hardware Specs:

  • CPU: i7-8700K
  • Memory: 2x8 16 GB 3000 MHz
  • Storage: Samsung SSD 850 EVO
  • GPU: RTX 3060

I included the total CPU Utilization as well as the other graphs which are a bit smaller. The second Invasion I switched the CPU graph to show logical processors. None of them reached 100% during the crash.

Crashed at 1:42

As you can see in the video there was no spike in the total CPU utilization, actually was a slight decrease. There was also a large decrease in GPU utilization.

I noticed this as well. When lots of Vfx, many players in an area, OPR big battles, my 3080 gpu has 50% usage.

Open world by myself, 99% usage

I think he wanted the task manager CPU graph on “Logical processors” to see if an individual core was maxing out. I also can’t remember, did anyone else freeze with you on that one?

Unrelated:

In the first few minutes of Brightwood at 11pm, we had a freeze on both middle gate and right gate at the exact same time. Sadly, again, it seems no one who was recording got it.

I did have “Logical processors” up the second time but forgot to record. I’ll include that in my next recording to show that none hit 100%.

Had a few crashes in WF today. Multiple other players in my area frozen and unfrozen at the same time. It seems that those further than ~30 meters were not affected.

At the end of the video I have two deaths, which show a completely separate bug that has been in the game for a while. It’s a bug that affects the respawn times in wars and invasions. Your game slows down to 2 fps whenever you’re on the death screen and it causes your respawn to be longer than it should. The only fix for this is to restart your game so if you’re doing a lot in the war then its actually better to restart MID WAR rather than to have your respawn time effectively double.

  • First death I died at 12:39 remaining in the invasion, the next respawn is at 13:06 so I should have ~33 seconds before I can respawn. When the timer pops up it shows 29 seconds, but the respawn didn’t come up for another 52 seconds! (60 seconds after death)
  • Second death I died at 2:26 remaining in the invasion, the next respawn is at 1:51 so I should have ~35 seconds before I can respawn. When the timer pops up it shows 32 seconds (similar difference as the first one), but the respawn didn’t come up for another 59 seconds! (64 seconds after death)

I also have “Bandwidth Mode” set to “High”.

Again, as you can see in the video this is not my system that is crashing. None of my CPUs ever reach 100%. You can actually see a large decrease amongst all cores during the crash.

Both these bugs NEED to be a priority in the upcoming bug fixing month if not sooner. Could we have an update on these bugs? @DoJoDan

Also from left gate on WF on the 26th at 10pm, Lila Mariposa froze twice.

We saw the same thing @Prasinos333 did, with the CPU usage actually going down rather than up during the freeze. Her hardware specs are: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, 32 GB RAM. She was running all low graphics during this invasion and continued to experience freezing.

(This video contains two crashes, One at 11 seconds and the second at 55 seconds.)

Same thing in 3v3 and OPR can happen. Fix your game.

MD invasion. We lost… Froze 7 min before the end… Mind to help? thank you.

Yes, as BunnyASF said, Mourningdale at 9pm was (in my opinion) lost because of the dual crashes happening on both right gate and middle gate at the same time. Some people were frozen all the way until the end, having to restart their games to get back in. It started at 7 minutes left in the invasion and lasted the entire rest of the invasion for some people. It doesn’t seem like anyone was recording this one from the crashing perspective, sadly, but we do have one from the walls and inside the fort. (Obviously not as helpful.)

Just in general, it’s rare to not get a freeze and crash at least once an invasion at this point. Obviously some are much shorter than others, with some lasting significantly less time, as well as happening earlier in the invasion, but it’s still quite frustrating to run invasions with these issues.

Again, we’re happy to help with literally any debugging required. We’re working on getting more people setup with the capability to record.

We’ve continued to crash, but we have some videos this time with CPU usage graphs on this time.

From Lila Mariposa, 08/28, Brightwood at 11pm.

32 GB RAM

My crashes from tonight, 08/29, First Light at 10:30. I crashed twice. The first crash lasted a full minute. At about 30 seconds, I got the windows non responsive screen, but let it sit. It appears that when I died in game, my game immediately came back, but it’s hard to tell.

The second crash appeared to happen at the exact same time as the 2nd skull spawning on middle gate. I’m unsure if that’s related, but it seems important to mention.

In both recording you can pretty clearly see the CPU usage per core and in both cases when frames aren’t being rendered the CPU goes down quite significantly. When the frames are being rendered, you can see it go up slightly, but it doesn’t seem to max out any single core.

My Hardware specs Ryzen 7 2700X

16GB RAM

Obviously this is continuing to happen and we’re continuing to compile videos of it happening. Please let us know if you need anything else, we are happy to help and would LOVE to get this resolved.

Here are the respawn times along with the first video’s timestamps:

  • 10:38 Respawn
  • 10:34 Spawn 3
  • 10:28 (0:05) - Crash
  • 10:14 Spawn 4
  • 9:54 Respawn & Spawn
  • 9:34 Spawn 6
  • 9:14 Spawn 8
  • 9:10 (1:23) - Death Screen, Instant Respawn
  • 9:10 Respawn
  • 9:04 Mid Head

Since your death lined up with a respawn it’s hard to tell when exactly you died. If you have another recording in which you died we could probably know for sure if dying “fixes” your character.

Yeah. It’s hard to tell for sure! It’s been a theory we’ve been thinking about for a bit, so we’ll have to see and we’re planning on getting some more data on that. Thanks for those specific times!

Sounds more or like what happened to me. My game froze for a good 10 seconds during a Mourningdale invasion yesterday, in Dry Tree.
