TL;DR: The game is a highly flawed masterpiece. Overall score 5.6/10. There’s a lot he likes about it, but a lot he doesn’t, as usual. I agree with most of his points, and I hold out as much hope as he does that the game will follow the ESO model: disastrous launch, followed by much improvement, to the point of becoming a top-tier MMO.

Unfortunately New World neither has a massive IP behind its back nor does the developers seem to know what they do at all. Additionally Amazon will release Lost Ark next year, which will take the spotlight the moment it launches. There’s not much hope for New World.

ESO had to be a success, it was mandatory, because of TES VI being so so so far away. New World came and went, that’s the future of this game.

in a very very basic summary, he gives his own point of view but also does point out the general flaws. It’s basically his opinion just like any player would have about the game according to their own perspective.

I think his feedback is more overall positive than the forum feedback. Unlike a lot of “gotta-have-it-now” gamers, he puts quite a bit more thought into his reviews and looks at the long term prospects of new games. He has no hesitation at pointing out why AGS lost 75% of its player base, but he also makes clear why he put of 500+ hours into the game himself and how much he enjoyed the Pros. The Cons are of course familiar to all of us.

The games doing something right if it’s getting big MMO names to play for like 8 hours a day average because 500 hours in 2 months is no easy feat

At this point it seems on the rightish track aside from a few weird design choices then they just need to ram content into this thing like no tomorrow

Every game “has to be a success”, no one puts out millions of $$ into something that they’re prepared to throw away (well, Anthem).

Even if that were true, Amazon’s money, resources, and drive for market dominance will offset any lack of urgency to save an invested franchise or IP. Amazon doesn’t play in niche markets, they enter every market with the intention of owning it. That alone will keep this game going long enough for enough significant improvements to be made to get it up to speed. I never thought ESO would recover, but it eventually did, and not because of “a massive IP”, but because they fixed a shit ton of bugs and made the game more fun.

Watch it yourself and see if you find it new or interesting. If you don’t, that’s cool. If you do, that’s also cool. That’s not for people to decide for you.

So, yeah, I pretty much agree with everything said here. There are a couple things I wasn’t aware of that made me go “yikes.” But, in general, it’s very similar to the way I feel.

Most of my ire stems from the incredibly stupid decision making post - launch, as well as the white knighters who unfathomably think certain things are good for the game. That stuff to me is more egregious than anything else.

If somehow the decision makers pull their heads out of their asses and recognize certain obvious truths, such as the player economy is in a deflationary freefall and needs to be fixed by adding in a vendor, then I may actually play again some day. I’d like for the game to be fixed. It’s too beautiful for me to want to watch it crash and burn. But, it feels like some things need to be hammered in over and over for them to understand things that should be obvious to anyone. And, until that fundamental part of their development is fixed, the game will continue to fail and lose players. Once they can finally understand what is wrong and how to fix it, this game might actually succeed one day. And, I’m not talking about complex things here. There are tons of very simple design flaws that should be recognized.

Are you for real? They literally just did that “ramming content like there’s no tomorrow” with this patch that people are losing their mind over.

I don’t know how you can say that the economies are fine. “Epic” items sell for change, virtually everything is rapidly dropping in price, and I see no end in sight to the deflationary trend.

I always wonder why MMO developers pair high-tier crafting with gear systems that produce items that never wear out. The supply just keeps getting larger and larger all the time, so the prices necessarily drop over time. Given a relatively static player base that keeps getting better geared all the time, demand is just going to continue dropping and with it, prices.

You’d think that consumables would then be the way to go. But the game gives away so many potions in the ordinary course of playing, I have a hard time justifying buying them. And food buffs are nice to haves, but probably unnecessary until you get to the very margins of the high-end game, where every bit of edge helps.

Peon hits on some of the questionable decision making, but there’s plenty more to talk about above and beyond what he’s pointed out. It really is a flawed masterpiece.

Anyone who had hopes or was hyped forgot to research. The devs aren’t entirely to blame because they were thrown to the lions for bad decisions! And I particularly feel sorry for them.
