Let's bring the MASSIVE back into MMO

Enough of this 2k population limit BS - it’s almost 2022, the hardware is out there for servers to have 50k pop, let’s get everyone together in new big massive servers with fresh starts for everyone without the duping, where there’s a TON of action going on, remove the town company control BS and these taxes BS and just have factions in control of wars with a 500 vs 500 war limit with UBERFORTS with street to street fighting, barricades and multiple flag capture points, 100 vs 100 OPR with 5 control points, let’s get REAL amazon, show us what you can really do and you might just save this game yet!

I sort of like that myself. You get to know who all the wreckage are by name, so you can permanently shun them.

If this has a graphics and combat mechanics like WoW it might work, but current 50v50 war is lagging lol

Game lags with 100 people and you thinking 50k servers?

Only way would be sharding and that is one of the worst things Wow added.

It also wouldn’t work with how the map is designed, so many people on a single server with so few territories? This would gate even more people from being able to participate in invasions and wars and such.

Even Wow struggles with large wars. In epic Bgs 40v40 during the initial fights its a lag fest with horrible spell activation. Only improves once people start spreading out over the map, but the lag difference between 40v40 and 15v15 is very noticeable.

There is no MMO with true 50k servers, not even close to it.

Population limits are always in place. Sure, some games resolve limits per realm by introducing multiple instances of zones, but this in my opinion is just a sham solution. We may as well then just opt for a RuneScape like system in which players can log in to any server, or at least any server of their worldset, to play as well. And link economies cross-server.

Non instanced, it is just not going to work. Clustering of players in high density areas, such as major cities, will just cause tremendous lag.

Large scale 500 vs 500 battles, even if the servers would be able to handle it. Once more, let’s be real, even games like EVE with their known massive battles turn into an absolute slideshow experience with such numbers. But just for the sake of humoring you, even if the servers would be able to handle it, player computers won’t.

You are not wrong.

I expected much better for video games to have technology to host thousands vs thousands at this point.

And to say that here we have problems with 50 vs 50…

The server hardware you would need to support this many on the same instance. Would cost in the billions atm. And that is just server hardware. Not even considering the cost of the Dev team to create and maintain this.

Maybe this is be a thing in about 10 to 20 years from now. Once gaming grade quantum computers become affordable. Speaking about that, with current top of the line civilian tech. You will run at sub 20 FPS with 50k people on the same instance if that.

Let’s be honest, NW is not even close to games like BDO, etc. Is nice at begining but later this game is just boring… and boring in very bad way. Here we are pushed to do things that has no sense in overall - why i must spend hundreds of hours to grind gearscore if pvp in this game is nonsense and meaningless - same with character progression and pve content. Why should I bother? Actually that is reason why mass of players going back to previous games they played.

I partially agree with this. I want large caps and less servers but there needs to be LOTS of fixes before any of that can be achieved. Even then though I don’t want 50k… Maybe 5K max

Hello dear forum users.

There is an example on this topic. “Neverwinter Online”. There are many channels on one server. A player can be in some place, and another player can be in the same place, but they cannot see each other. To do this, someone has to switch to another channel. One click. At the same time, the auction, chat, etc. are perceived as one. The whole server is one, but all are scattered along the channels through which you can freely move.
As an example. Therefore, you can solve the problem with a bunch of people on a small map. Everyone will scatter through the channels and move or collect as needed. So everything can be boiled down to a single server with many channels. And for an instance or raid - a matchmaking system. There groups gather regardless of the channel and location inside the game.
And beauty.

It is possible without a selection system. I got to the dungeon, and the others got there, and then everyone gathered on one of the canals and forward.
The beauty.

Thank you.

But from a user standpoint, this is not a single world. There are no 50k players in a single world. It is just multiple worlds in which players are allowed to freely transfer in between. It’s comparable to e.g. RuneScape (which has done this for roughly 20 years by now already), or ESO.

It however does not bring MASSIVE back into MMO. You still won’t be seeing Everfall buzzing with 2k players, you won’t have a single ‘channel’ with 50k players.

And in a game like New World, this does pose certain ‘problems’. Not so much from a technical standpoint, but rather put simply the question how to you deal with territory ownership in case borders from servers are lifted and free movement between worlds is possible? Do you restrict territory ownership to 1 per guild to prevent zerg guilds from just owning not one instance of Everfall on server A, but also owning it on server B - G?

How do you work with things like taxation? Will you average Everfall taxations for example, to that of all servers combined and have a small share go to all owners? What otherwise is stopping players from moving to a low tax server to do their crafting, sales, etc. Nothing really.

As such, technical restrictions will not so much be the problem here, but rather the gameplay implications it has.

Hang on while we work on adding that. We’ll let you know

And add in game queues to every node and quest mob in the game?

Do you people just think about your wishes instead of the idea that that you wish for might technical not be possible and/or wouldn’t help the game at all?

Try to gather on full server. There are times where I see no orich, no starmetal, no iron, no wyrdwood, no silk, no hemp, fishing hotspots are empty and if I am lucky then the quest miniboss willnspawn fast enough. Even the trees are all taken down near the major towns.
Gathering will not work once there is 100+ people gathering in the same terrirory. Luckily people also craft and search chests, so it is more like 250-500+ people in the same territory, but with more people on the same server there is not enough territories for gathering to work and support crafters.

The game would need complete redesign to support larger popularion.

One server, but with many channels. It turns out that several groups can fight with a certain boss on the map, in the same place, but on different channels and at the same time. Likely parallel worlds. With shops and taxes, it’s also clear - all channels are copies of each other.
But how to deal with the seizure of territories in such a situation is a separate decision. Probably some kind of event, on any of the channels and according to the results, the territory either changes its owner or does not change it.
There are, of course, many nuances of how this mechanic can be implemented correctly.
But the concept itself is one server, one world, many channels, which are complete copies of each other. In cities, taxes are different within the world itself, but the parallel channels are exact copies. One auction.
This solution is how you can physically disperse thousands of people on a server so that no one interferes with anyone.
A busy spot for pumping or extracting resources is changing to another channel. I need to go through the quest, I found the nearest player in the list of active players in the vicinity - I asked a question, like help the quest run? OK. One to the other jumped onto the channel - and started.
Sieges, conquests, and so on - there may be different options.

Superficially something like that.

Gracias.

One Server to rule them all, One Server to find them,
One Server to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of New World where the Shadows lie.
