I GM’d Anarchy Online from 2001-2004
I beta’d and played WOW from 2004 off and on until 2019
Played FFXIV 2014-Present
Played Diablo II, DAOC, LOTR, Rift, many others so I have a good sense of what I think is important features in an MMO, and I feel these are woefully missing from NEW WORLD.
A more user friendly and intuitive single interface Dungeon Finder
Equipment Manager, is coming but should have been in at launch
Any gear you get useable as skins, not junk ingame, and any decent ones in the shop. This is okay up to a point… but then don’t take advantage.
No Swimming?
No mounts? And please don’t give me some silly lore reason for why we don’t get along with beasts, as there’s always ways around this, it’s your lore…
Holiday items come out they can’t even be used as skins, and even if they could, they simply don’t look good.
Every dungeon should be mythic level unlocked, always, the only reason to hold mutation to 2 dungeons or 3? a week, is if you have enouigh dungeons to give people something to do, and you don’t.
Holiday food is 33 but food you can buy is 40 stats, so there’s no incentive for most people to care.
Killed Yeti a bunch of times and he only dropped items to turn into coins… which are then turned into premium coins every 25, like why? Is this convoluted system even necessary?
Music system could be better, let you write and save your own songs…
Potions weigh too much, they should weight 1/10 a lb at most, not 1/2.
Every holiday event so far has been annoying. Teleport to random location to kill a giant turkey or yeti… it’s formulaic, and not a good formula either. There’s already too much running around with no mounts, and you make the holidays all running around too? No thanks.
Having all those necessary resistences is a bad idea. WOW did this for years, and it sucked… they learned their lesson… no one wants to collect multiple sets for every thing they play.
One reason they are specifically giving you regular tokens and then having your convert them is the Azoth vial cost. They added wayyyyy too many of them early on in the game and this is their way to try and remove them from the game. Don’t think it’s at all necessary but might explain why they did it the way they did it.
They easily could have just given a single premium token instead since it’s 1-5 per kill (10-50 tokens) with a premium token being right in the middle.
I also agree with the open world bosses, I think it’s different with holiday events where they went to make them frequent enough so that everyone can participate in them but right now it’s literally just a massive train zerging it constantly.
I think it would be cool if the locations were not predictable. The frequency of the events was low enough that it isn’t a constant train. There is a variety of possible world bosses that can spawn. They have different level of bosses. Some that do not have icons so they require players to stumble upon them and explore the world, but require 5-10 players max. Then much rarer ones that are announced and have an icon that require 100+ players to defeat.
I have a whole randomized spawning system I’ve been suggesting forever now that find accomplish it, but honestly even if they wanted to hand place the spawns for each individual boss, instead of using a more global system. They could be doing it better at least.
I just don’t like it when these things are solved almost minutes after release. The thing spawns in 8 rotating locations. Etc.
Still! Because I’ve been particularly negative lately. Want to say that I’m loving the progress they are making and that we have world bosses now. I just hope they keep improving upon it.
This just seems like a “this game isn’t World of Warcraft and it upsets me” post.
The dungeon finder works fine, with only minor improvements needed.
Equip management is coming.
Transmog is coming.
No swimming was an intentional design choice to make water something deadly that got you killed in landscape PvP.
Every game does not need mounts. They are a movement speed effect with additional model and animation work. Traveling around the world is plenty smooth as is.
Holiday items will likely be counted in as transmog items.
Maybe. Haven’t heard much of anyone talk about this topic, most people seem content with rotating mythics. Either or system works.
Holiday food is cheaper, easier to get, doesn’t require crafting, and ensures that -crafted- food, which comes from other players, is still superior. It’s an alternative for max level players that is easier to obtain, and is a high quality option for people who aren’t end game yet.
Loot drops need to be improved for holiday bosses. Calling it convoluted is a bit dishonest though. Get item > turn into better item is not convoluted.
Music system was an unexpected and extremely welcome addition to the game. Considering it can be played by anyone, with the only investment required being that they learn the songs, and that the developers made their own in-universe fitting music instead of taking “Through the Fire and the Flames” and renaming it is incredible. Making your own music would be nice, but far from a priority in an otherwise very functional music system that is the MMO equivalent of Guitar Hero. It’s great.
Potions weigh too much? You have instant transmission storage for every settlement in the game, with multiple houses, territory standing bonuses to increase storage, encumbrance potions, encumbrance songs, and bags you can equip that raise your total equip load to almost as much as some territory storages. Weight hasn’t been a problem in New World for a long time.
Holiday events to you are annoying? Formulaic? It’s an MMO. An MMORPG is literally the genre definer for “formulaic” gameplay. We create characters, login, kill stuff, level up, get loot. The fact we have dubstep rocks falling from the sky, giant laser shooting turkeys, and fishing events focused on learning new dance emotes and home decoration separate the game from many other MMOs for holiday events.
Necessary resistances are a difference in design philosophy, not “leaning their lesson” like it’s a bad system. WoW over the years continued to shift further and further away from the “RPG” and more into the MMO. Removal of ammo requirements, reagents, gear resistances, weapon skill leveling, etc. I would argue logging into the same set of gear every day, in almost every form of content that never changes is boring and unengaging. You want players to keep looking at their character and gear.
The amount of mechanics that have been ground down to the bit since the launch of New World, and since before it’s launch is absurd. There are so few things left in the game that cause any real friction.
What ARE priorities that the developers need to be working on instead of pretty ponies and reducing potion weight are:
More PvP Content. The game at it’s core has PvP woven into almost every mechanic, and only recently has shifted away from that to accommodate WoW and Final Fantasy refugees.
Weapon balancing. Weapons still have a good bit to go before being ideally balanced, with some dramatically over performing in comparison to others.
New weapons. There are a lot of roles that have yet to be filled, and need to be to help garner along better weapon balancing, as each weapon would have it’s counter.
Not every game needs to be like the one we spent too much of our lives on previously. This is coming from a WoW vet that picked it up in mid 2005 and only dropped it in the last two years recently. I don’t want New World to resemble WoW at all.
After farming the Yeti for about 3 hrs today… I was able to purchase just about everything from the shop… all the skins, already have all the furniture from last year.
The event is technically dead to me in less then 24hrs… not sure who thought having no cap on Yeti loot per day was a good idea… but it is what it is.
I do agree, this is just the Turkey event with a skin… and true to form of the skin in NW… it looks stupid.
I give them a C for effort, a F for just using the same event formula by slapping a boss in the middle of fuck all and having a Zerg train of 200 players roll it over in 45seconds… if this is their idea of fun… we are screwed for future content.
It isn’t that I don’t like running out to some cool world boss, but farming him for hours shouldn’t be the core method people do this event… like they just break your event when they can ignore all mechanics and ROFL stop it…
Like this could have been a good time to introduce your RAID SYSTEM and make this your first raid boss that is and ARENA fight… no orb needed to start. This could get people to form groups using the NEW GROUP FINDER… cough and then you could have had like a three kill limit per day, make people do this event for a week or 2 at min to get all the items for the love of god.
There are so many little things they could do that would make the game more exciting and drive players together… but I guess their idea of together in this game is just a shit load of bodies in one spot smashing face against a boss… I did this for years in BDO… it wasn’t fun in that game either.
It’s because the people who made this game do not, not ever had any experience in MMO’s. (Don’t argue it’s clear) nor did they bother to do ANY homework on other MMO’s to see what did and did not work and what fans liked. Ya know the people who played and bought the game.
Luck in this game doesn’t work, because it’s overly complicated and the dev’s can’t even explain it properly. (Ie it’s a bad system and should be clear on our char sheet how much luck we have) and we should NEVER be so lucky we over shoot things. That’s stupid unless I mean even Anime’s make fun of that idiocy, Oh you wanted these common herbs that are literally all around you but you can only get the rare ones hahaha… dumb.
They also rely on the players to tell them when the game is broken. Hatchet ring any bells? Now I know they aren’t going to catch all of the bugs, and I’m not blaming the poor coders who are working hard and doing what they are told, I’m blaming the leadership. The people who are in charge of what is repeatedly becoming a meme… this game loses so many players by poorly thought out and bad decisions it’s not even funny. HIRE SOMEONE who knows what the hell they are doing please!
And why in gods name is the store… ya know who you work for right… Amazon… is not completely stocked full of (Reasonably priced) things is beyond me… it would allow you to have a bigger budget to higher people and show that you are successful… this from the jump was so bad of a project you should have been closed prior to launch… and I’m not even being near as harsh as I should be… I’m just frustrated, and these damn merges are getting old, because they keep folding toxic aholes into stable servers… we don’t need that. How about changing the system to support smaller server sizes duh… % based taxes NOT flat rate. And lose the double taxes in the AH, that’s crazy. 3.5 is too much but could be acceptable. You took all the money away from the owenershp of towns just to give it right back to them IDIOCY! While we’re at it put in a bank (For money) so I can put in cash so I can have my taxes for my house paid so I’m not constantly getting bugged… that’s annoying.
My understanding was that the Engine the game is built on does not support swimming physics. Could be wrong that was over a year ago before launch I heard that.
Yes, was intentional, they simply don’t know how to do it.
That’s one perspective, but every person has different needs and the speed buff is a joke, works only 20% of the time and in this game who will spend the entire time on a curved road if one can move in a straight line?
