What is in the following directories that keeps getting corrupted on so many players systems leading to a host of different problems?
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\AGS
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\AGS
I’ve read a multitude of posts by players that range from periodic lockups during gameplay to being unable to load a character that ultimately were tied to one or both of these directories. Who knows how many other potential issues are also tied to these directories.
Your customer service agents repeatedly suggest that players reboot their systems, do integrity checks and uninstall/reinstall the game among a litany of other troubleshooting ideas. None of those suggestions will likely have any impact on their problem as the files are not directly linked to any of the suggested solutions.
Rebooting the system won’t help because the files that are corrupted are still present. An integrity check only verifies the files in the Steam installation directory and uninstalling/reinstalling the files through Steam does nothing with the User files once they are created.
So again what is it in these two directories that could so adversely affect gameplay? If you aren’t certain then perhaps your customer service agents should be requesting that players send the potentially affected files to your development team for analysis. This would then help you to develop a solution for doing an automatic file check of them.
In the meantime the first step a player should be asked to do, above all others, is either to rename the AGS folders found in the Local and Roaming directories, or at an extreme delete them. Either of these choices will force them to be rebuilt the next time the game launches. Either one of these should come with the caveat that doing so will require a player reset up their in game configurations again. At least renaming the directories will allow a player to restore the original file settings should this method of troubleshooting not resolve the associated issue.
The customer service agents would also need to post steps to enable hidden files as the AppData directory falls under this category when searching for it using File Explorer.
I hope either you or Kay will read this and respond at some point with your thoughts.
