[Megathread] Server Transfer Questions Megathread

Well, imagine moving 5000 people manually … they would be done early 2022.

At least it’s something lol

well, when you screw it up you have to fix it, so I think theres nothing impossible with a bit of effort

They could create a tool to do it in less than a week depending on how many people they allocated to the project.

They didnt create new technology or database structures specifically for this game. They are leveraging the power of AWS. AWS has the ability to migrate data to any number of locations across the world. They are choosing to not implement the feature in this product.

Imagine, if you will, my billion dollar world wide enterprise utilizes AWS a new app we created. We are US based but want local data accessible to a new site in the EU, do you think for a second I would believe them if they told me they couldn’t transfer that data?

oh heres an aws link about migrating data across regions…

Amazon is a one trillion dollar company telling us that entering information into a database is impossible.

The fact that you are letting us down in the region to region transfers makes me want to be able to ask for a refund. I have crossed the Steam refund terms. However, I feel like I have been scammed.

If you need to implement a harder transfer system, it is YOUR problem, not ours. You said we could be able to transfer to any available server, and you were asked in Twitter and responded with region to region transfers being possible in this transfer system of you.

Now you are not being true to your words, so I think that at least we de serve a refund. I am not playing again the same 25 levels and +50 levels in my jobs.

There shouldn’t be any technical reason that region to region transfers can’t take place.

If it is the case that the back end has been designed in such a way to limit this functionality then the team who designed it need firing!

You already have the necessary coding! I mean, you have the code to create new characters right? So, …

  1. strip the information for the character from the region.
  2. have that information pumped into a holding database (server transfer database)
  3. using already established code with the added functionality to connect to the server transfer database, run through creating a new character in the new region, using the information pulled from the server transfer database.
  4. confirm char was moved correctly by comparing data.
  5. if okay delete old character from old region.

Do you guys need me to flow chart and pseudo code it for you?

What are you talking about gentlemen? Are you computer engineers/network engineers/coders? Where are you taking this “manually” fantasy from?

If you can create a character on ANY server, whether its US East, West or EU… as you can right now, then do you think some physical USB drive has to be manually inserted in those geographical locations? Like there is a thing in EU or LA that gets plugged in onto a machine by a guy every time someone creates a character?

Do you know what modern virtualization is and what the term “cloud” computing means? Do you know what Amazon AWS is or Microsoft Azure? Do you know how much AWS generates in revenue for Amazon?

With modern day server data fluidity they can do this as easy as breathing. Your whole account/character data is at best a few megabytes of data, or even a few kilobytes… like 700kb that can get copied within a few microseconds, if not nanoseconds between different data servers in ANY well connected region or your computer. If you create an account on EU or US East right now and it takes you a few seconds to login, how do you think happens?

This is a relatively straightforward issue for them to solve, an easy feature for them to add. The reason they don’t add it is because they are lazy OR made the decision not to, due to other issues it may create, like server population dis-balances. If they start granting that capability on a permanent basis to all, region to region transfers, it may create problems.

So the solution would be do it as a “one-off” for those players who got stuck in wrong regions for the wrong reasons. And the responsibility of this stuck-ness of some players in wrong regions is on the devs/reps hands, as they were the ones to mislead with wrong information!!

Nope it’s impossible to enter information into a database. We’re sorry for your frustrations.

I scrolled through over 100 replies and found no answer to what Tervalentyeti13 asked so I’d like to repeat the question. If I have a character on Vanaheim Astra world set, and that’s the only character I have in the game, can I transfer that character to another server with the Vanaheim Astra world set?

It seems so as long as you dont want to transfer regions.

You can’t have more than one character on a world set. It says so when you are creating a character as well so there is nothing different.

k, sorry, i dont use twitter. in this forum they didnt (on german part)

“it seems so” is a speculation though, there have been posts that implied you may not be able to, but they were answering a different question. There was no answer to mine (posted by someone else as well as one of the very first replies to this thread)

Sorry.

Although I cannot speak officially

Yes is the answer

You can move a character to any server (in the same region) as long as you do not have another character on the target world set.

If you only have a single character… you can go anywhere within the same region…as long as… the server isn’t flagged as being locked due to too many players already.

If you have a single character on world set A… you can move to any world set… A B OR C as long as there server you want to move to isnt locked due to too many players.

If you have 2 characters , if character 1 is on world set A cnad character 2 is on world set B … you can move character 1 to a server on world set A or C… if you want to move character 2 you can only move to servers on world set B or C. Again…as longnas the target server isnt locked due to too many players already

That sounded way more certain, I’ll trust you. Thank you for the answer, I hope if that’s not the case we’ll have a community manager reply to this and give clarification.

AWS DataSync is for other more complex purposes and larger data sets. For transferring instances of installations, pre configured stacks, virtualized OS’s and many other things. They don’t even need to use that.

For this it’s a simple database fetch from one file (where your character is) and an amend, or copy of that data to another file (where you character should be), then a delete of the old entry. That is if they store player databases in separate files per region, which is most likely.

In any case its mostly copy, paste, and verify. The server machine can process 200,000 player entries in a minute. But they won’t get 200k requests in one go. If they add the feature people will initiate it at separate times.

This is simple stuff.

I must be dumb cause im not getting this… Is it gonna be possible to transfer from say World set A to World set B within the same reason? cause ingame says something different?

See my response above…

I edited it to clarify

Absolutely! we have a group who wanted to play NW together but are currently scattered across NA and EU servers, since the advice was to get on anywhere you could. Need to be able to move region. Names are globally locked, so that is not an issue.
