Melee is not fun

why do you nerf great axe more ? are you mocking us ? XD EVERYONE is playing mage or musket / bow melee game play is SAD and after killing great axe in your last patch you nerf it more ? like are you serious ?

No, @Willard, the desync/lag and its resolution will NOT solve all the problems with melee.

  • Melee is too slow in combat as well as getting to combat (lack of gap closing abilities).
  • Melee in heavy armor does not absorb enough damage to compensate for ranged damage attacks (ranged opponents can drop your health by half before melee can even engage).
  • Melee attacks telegraph what they are about to do much longer than ranged opponents do (need shorter animation speeds [maybe increase 10-20% animations] on some melee like warhammer, great axe, sword and shield, and some spear abilities – rapier and hatchet seem to be in pretty good places right now)

Please note, I’m referring to frontal melee vs frontal ranged (not stealth melee vs stealth ranged); that’s got its own issues.

Look at the advantages of the Ranged player:

  • Encouraged to wear light armor (or medium for more survivability) (increase in dps).
  • Has more dodges (lighter armor)
  • Can fully attack at a safe distance
  • Can see what the melee is about to do and kite away (while still hitting the melee person who can’t reach that far)

Between the dodges, higher dps, kiting away, and fighting at a distance, what offsets do melee dps have to compensate? Not much.

For STR builds:
SnS point Anchor and chase down GA

Per the PTR the changes to Gravity well is about to put the nail in the coffin for GA.

Grav Well is a major aspect of GA being a chase down/initiate weapon.

The original lunge was too much, but currently the GA has a worse lunge for light attacks than Spear or Hammer. You can literally back pedal and keep the GA out of lunge distance.

Bruisers should be the back line dive and chase down in OPR/WAR but it’s very hard to dispute that VG/IG does it better because they don’t really have to chase due to the lock down VG/IG pairing can offer.

I have a few discussions on rapier with rapier mains as well that adds to the current state of GA.

GA isn’t in a good place and if PTR is an indication of a nerf to Grav Well, expect not many people to run GA after.

I personally may leave the game if GA is made any worse as I don’t want to spend the time or money regearing for VG/IG or WH/IG or some other more viable melee build.

Apparently. Every time they nerf GA, “melee is dead”.

I am a WH and GA player and no, they should not attack faster, they are two handed slow weapons. However the fact a rapier can reposte a hammer that size is a bit silly. Ga does no damage at the moment and while the WH can cc, it’s way to easy to dodge and cannot close gaps.

So you are left with a gap closing weapon that does average damage and a hard hitting weapon that cannot hit range players.

Increase GA damage as it was before and should be fine

The issue is also related to armor. If these two weapons would be used with only heavy armor, balancing them won’t be an issue. But since they can be used with medium armor that has a lot of armor rating and good mobility, it’s hard to balance. Light should have high mobility and take huge damage, medium shoukd allow you to survive a few hits, not spam dodge and take 1k dmg from a GA while dealing more damage

yeah Desync is by far the hardest to balance and iron out… but if it were, half these nerffs/changes to some of these weapons wouldn’t have needed the nerf to begin with imo… Like the GA lunge distance… Who’s to say that if Desync were fixed to some degree, that people were actually able to kite from the lunge distance properly, and it wouldn’t have needed such a large lunge distance being taken away from GA users. Or Bow/Musket damage… they seem to hit more often than miss, and half the time, I see the trail of a musket being 8 feet away from me, yet I still got hit… So if the Desync was fixed, who knows what type of nerffs are needed to truly define how a weapon should or shouldn’t work.

Thank you very much for your reply. Great axe was nerfed too much and now is getting even more nerf. The lunge was too much at the beggining that is a fact but now its less then 2 meters to land a hit. The big issue is that you hit someone and he literally can walk away and kite you easily, damage was nerfed, bloodlust was nerfed and now gravity is nerfed. ive spend 1500 hours grinding the gear i like to play and now i see it nerfed in every patch. if the other player is just decent great axe right now loses every fight! give something back to the weapon maybe a bit more lunge or a bit more damage dont nerf it more plz

Yes, the pull on All 2 handers should be standard with Spear being slightly longer.

The current light lunge on GA was over nerfed.

This among other changes I’ll go more in depth in my post when I get home.

Yes indeed. Hey don’t let the trolls and the negative comments bring anyone down at AGS, yall are doing what you can to stay afloat, and I’m eager to see some of these suggestions and improvements be implemented. Who knows, maybe this “Frontier zone” idea sticks and makes some of the best of the best players unite again.

yah no it wont lol, revert ga back to where it was for lunge, revert rapier cds to 20 sec ags just overbalances like it wont make a ripple effect LOL

I feel like as a new studio the biggest advice i can give you guys is not how to change classes, but to establish design principles and investigate others from other studio’s.

An example of that in this case would be:

  • Every action that can be taken has a counter type option for that action.

In this case, melee cannot generally do anything when they get “stuck” in ice shower.

Its for this reason / principle that i have suggested that ice shower and gravity well get removed from “locking people” from movement and to simply allowing them to roll out of it, and for the abilities to have longer durations or lower cooldowns.

I think you will find that chance to ice shower and grav well will go over much better that way.

Second,
I would really encourage the removal of dodge, and duck and moving roll to all classes away from armor types. Roll is superior in terms of “fun” and there is nothing wrong with it being on all classes as they fundamentally all do the same thing.

Honestly the nerfs need a full revert. Now that people know how to play the game, now that the skill caps for the other weapons have been reached, we should be taking a second look at great axe at its peak.

Yeah if I had my VG/IG heavy armor build during ga/wh peak I’d of had a field day taking a nice 800 damage a per greataxe swing and rooting and spiking them for around 4-6k damage. People’s knowledge on defense stacking and CC use has really improved in this game.

Competent bow/musket/rapier players and FS/IG mages never really had trouble fighting greataxe at their peak. People just really didn’t like that greataxe could essentially only left click and kill newer players who didn’t know how to kite properly.

Now with greataxes only purpose of initiating fights in wars basically being removed they should at least give it a small portion of its lunge back and boost reaps damage to it’s original state and fix maelstrom eating allied projectiles. As the new way to build Gaxe will probably be charge, reap, maelstrom

I wanna bump this thread, just to remind us all we had a ton of dialogue about why melee is bad, and specifically why great axe is absolute shit right now along with other weapons being pretty bad too. And AGS came out with their PTR notes and said “Fuck you and your melee weapons”

Ranged classes raged over gravity well for a long time, and they did it, they nerfed the only ranged skill for melee class that can actually stop a ranged from running away, WITH exceptions like rapier.

Now it’s virtualy impossible for a melee to get to a ranged and do enough damage to kill.

so my idea: We rage over ranged cc skills to get a balanced game experience.

THEY DONT CARE like… AT ALL. Countless of topics for 2 months about how bad the melee experience is did anyone of the devs reply? did they fix ANYTHING no. What they did ? more nerf why ? because they dont care about you or me XD. They have a path in their head they stick to it and keep loosing people why ? BECAUSE THEY DONT CARE peace and love <3
