Memory Leak / Freezes while level up fishing profession

I did some fishing while the XP boost was active this week. I noticed the following problem:
After ~12 level ups in a row in fishing, the game is starting to freeze while level up of the fishing profession. It starts with freezes which lasts less than a second. After some more level ups (in fishing profession) the freezes already lasts more than 30 seconds. While the game freezes, I can see in the Windows Task Manager, that New World is filling my RAM. At the beginning New World needed around 5 to 6 GByte RAM. As soon as the freezes starts, New World takes up to 12,5 GByte RAM. I was not moving around, just standing at the same spot and do fishing. After around ~20 level ups in fishing profession in total, the game freeze already for up to two minutes, New World is crash to desktop in the most cases, if it takes so long.

I found an old forum post from October 2021, it seems that person had the same problem. But no one responded and it seems it is still not fixed:

I also guess, that this persons have the same problem:

But it does not crash to desktop for them (or it takes more level ups), because they has more RAM.

Using Windows 10 21H2 64 bit, Intel i7 7700k (default clock), 16 GByte RAM (DDR4 2666 Dual Channel), NVidia RTX 2080 Super with NVidia GeForce Game Ready Driver 512.77.

@Wyvernn thanks for your answer. I opened a Web Ticket for this issue. Unfortunately the max length for the description is very limited, so I had to cut down my error description. And it seems not possible to upload the dxdiag.txt file to the Web Ticket.

How can I see my self created Web Tickets?

Got already an answer from AGS customer service.

Just an addition:
I have no crash logs in %localappdata%\AGS\New World\CrashDB\reports
My guess: New World run out of system memory because of the memory leak. In this case maybe no crash logs will be written.

Hey there, we have a fix going out in the next patch - but if you still experience the freeze post-update, let me know.

@Kay thanks. I had a more detailed report hopefully that helped. I also believe it’s tied to the popups of aptitude chests as well. If you stockpile a bunch and open them, you start to see the same behavior and memory starts ticking up. Nothing like the problem I saw where the client ate nearly all the ram on a 64G machine though. Client likely needs a pass with a leak detection tool.

I’m having issues still on Live and on PTR.

After 20-30 minutes of fishing it starts to freeze or glitch where fishing wheel gets stuck and I can’t tell where my tension is at. Also the longer I fish the longer the delay in response to me pressing/releasing the mouse button.

Sometimes I get really bad glitches where fishing UI gets stuck on my screen, I can’t unequip fishing pole, fishing pole is stuck on my back, my character uses wrong animation mining ( gather herb animation ), just a whole slew of weirdness from fishing.

I watch the latency and it doesn’t spike when this happens

@Kay at least my freezes are gone. With the todays double xp event I made 22 level ups in fishing without restarting, and 15 level ups in a row. No freezes anymore. Thanks!

Going to send this to QA and see if we can repro. What world were you on, RTT at the time of the hang, and any other details you can provide?

Hey @Kay - I was actually about to update this good timing

  • I’m still having issues

edit: I will try to do an actual recording this weekend to showcase all the weirdness as it progresses cause sometimes it gets reaally weird ( using fishing pole as weapon, T-Posing, etc. )

World: Maramma

Decided to do some fishing today and headed to First Light. Went to a Broad Fishing spot and caught an aquatic snail and another fish. The third fish I tried to catch resulted in the Tension Meter getting stuck and my character stuck leaning back reeling. I have to dodge or put away the fishing pole to break out of this stuck animation.

I tried fishing for the next few minutes and kept having issues with my tension bar getting stuck and it just keeps going red and never breaks.

Tension getting stuck and maxing out but never breaking:

Stuck in casting mode without the ability to move unless I put away fishing pole:

Tried moving to another spot but the game finally had enough and crashed:

At this point I went full-ham on trying to resolve this myself. I scanned my RAM ( no issues ), checked my Registry ( only 2 issues regarding unrelated missing keys that I resolved ), and verified files on Steam.

I restarted my PC using safe boot and disabled all non-essential programs except for Steam, New World, and Easyanticheat using MSCONFIG.

I then pulled up task manager memory to keep track of it while fishing. I wish I took more pictures but I was so fed up at this point I wasn’t thinking clearly cause I spent hours trying to fix it and it didn’t help;

After just a few minutes fishing my memory shot up to 85% usage even with my PC running on bare bones:

So my memory started out around 35% before staring New World.

  • It then went up to about 60% on login screen
  • It normalized around 70% before fishing and just walking around first light.
  • As I fished it kept going up as high as 90% but if I stopped fishing it would slowly come back down to 85%.

Some additional issues I have while fishing:

  • Character will sometimes cast the fishing pole and nothing happens. I just sit there with my pole out and can’t real in or put away fishing pole. I have to /unstuck which results in me being stuck in fishing position without a fishing pole. From here I have to weapon swap to fix myself.

  • Character forgets how to fish. Sometimes while these other issues are going on, my character will no longer pull out the fishing pole when activating the hotkey. I can reassign the fishing hotkey and it still doesn’t work. I can assign the key to another task and the button works - I just can’t fish. Sometimes if I unequip the fishing pole then click “repair all” and re-equip the fishing pole I can fish again.

  • Character gets stuck reeling even when I let go of the mouse. The fish will then start glitching towards me and keep going until it travels into the ground a mile behind me - line never breaks, I have to /unstuck or dodge to break out of the animation.

  • Fishing tension desync happens frequently - it will either show green and snap or show red and still let me reel in. Also there is occasionally major delays between me letting go/pressing and the response to the tension ( no spike in latency or input on the top left )

  • Sometimes my character gets a combination of the glitches above which result in very specific and odd behaviors - like when I go to mine rocks I use the wrong animation ( herb gathering ) or i punch with any weapon. Sometimes other people see me T-Posing or just glitching around when on my screen I’m walking normally.

Something to note - I’m approaching level 200 fishing, and for the majority of my time fishing I never had a real problem. I would very occasionally have issues with tension, bad animation, or stuck characters - but now it happens within my first 10 casts. This started as far as I could tell since update 1.4 and seems to be getting worse. I am not experiencing issues with other parts of the game. I still have the same experience crafting/boss farming/etc. with no irregularities participating in those events.

Also I have the same issues when trying to fish on PTR.

Between version 1.4 and now I have uninstalled/reinstalled both the PTR and Live New World.

FYI, Devs reproducing this is as easy as fishing for a long time. I always have to restart after a while to get rid of the freezing.

Gonna tell you right now you need 16g of ram period. As you near that 8g limit windows starts swapping unused memory to disk which starts slowing the system down. The bug I had seen was eating gigs every few seconds. Windows runs best at 16 today, 8 was best several years ago.

It’s not a “need 16GB of ram period” situation;

  • I have no gameplay impacts doing everything else from world tour chest run zergs, expeditions, to farming for hours straight. It’s just fishing that’s the culprit. In the screenshots above I had everything shut down except new world. Today I’m playing with a second screen connected and running youtube videos on my 2nd screen while having NW up and it’s only putting around 70%-75% so long as I don’t fish.

Do I want 16GB RAM - sure, there is no such thing as too much RAM. Do I need it? No I don’t need it atm.

Well, I can’t reproduce this bug after the last patch anymore. So it can’t be so easy.
