My opinion on DR's on Attributes and Hard/Soft caps on Buffs/Debuffs by iDarkStar

I went to see if there were any MMO’s that had DR’s on attributes and found a pretty good read.

Diminishing Returns for Balance - TV Tropes

(DR’s references Diminishing Returns)

Basically says that when using Diminishing Returns for balance purposes you should…

  • Tweak regularly and specifically not generally.
  • Monitor closely and adjust minimally.
  • Causes confusion and a Min/Max nightmare.
  • Compares DR’s to bottlenecks, which is what they are.

Diminshing Returns can be useful for many things to help keep things relevant and put a cap on the top to prevent it from being OP.

New world uses DR’s on CC, Haste and Attributes.

Anything not using DR’s is Hard Capped or Soft-Capped on a slider of debuff to buff ratio while some Soft-Capped buffs are countered by Hard-Capped buffs.

The Gist of DR’s on stats

  • The entire thesis behind DR’s is raising the minimum and lowering the maximum for a better, “balance.”
  • DR’s makes more sense if it was on buff’s and debuffs
  • DR’s raises the minimum damage and lowers the maximum damage
  • DR’s raises the minimum squishiness and lowers the maximum tankiness when Con is included in the DR’s
  • No DR’s on buffs and debuffs and Soft-Capped buffs with Hard-Capped debuffs bottlenecks the players ability to have options for countering and gives players limitless options for stacking stats resulting in little to no depth or freedom.
  • Buffs and Debuffs not having DR’s while base stats are heavily weighted with DR’s creates a baseline of stats and makes buffs and debuffs the main thesis for combat.
  • When Buffs and Debuffs are the main contributor for combat mechanics you have buff/debuff dependant combat.

If they want stats on a DR scale then they should start with implimenting DR’s on all of their Hard-Cap and Soft-Cap buffs and debuffs then removing the caps.

Remove ALL DR’s on stats because the only reason we would want DR’s on stats is if we had more stat points. DR’s on stats are supposed to stop people from spamming one attribute and becoming super strong. If we had the ability to run 300/300/200 it would make sense to add DR’s to attributes. What is the point of DR’s on stats?

I had more to put but… you get the picture.

DR’s on buffs and debuffs makes much more sense.

10% could be where DR’s begin.

20% → 19%
30% → 28%
40% → 36%
50% → 44%
60% → 50%
70% → 55%
80% → 59%
90% → 62%
100% → 64%
