Nameplates give an advantage to ranged players in small scale PVP

A similar thread has been posted already but it closed back in February without a moderator response. My issues with player nameplates are with both the design and how they work.

If you tag (hit) a player their nameplate will stay on them for a few seconds, even if they hide behind cover. This in my opinion gives an unfair advantage to ranged players who can see the enemy’s location despite the character model itself not being within their field of view. You can infer when they’re about to step out of cover and basically just be ready to click on them from a safe distance when they do.

Then there’s the nameplate design itself, it has a little diamond above the enemy’s head and a lot of ranged players use that as reference to shoot even if the character model is being obstructed by things like bushes, plants and whatnot.

Here are a few examples with what I mean:

As far as large scale PVP goes I don’t think this is an issue, in fact it might be a debuff since there are so many things cluttering your screen (nameplates, control point icons, skills, etc) you don’t really know who or what you’re shooting at.

What do you think?

What do you propose?
A threshold distance for the nameplates?

What would the distance be? Bows and muskets need to know who are they aiming to. A distance threshold would do some good maybe, but how far? I don’t want to fk muskrats even when I hate them deeply, same as bowmen, they need to know who they are aiming before wasting a shot or skill.

Or we talking only about nameplates visibility when you lose LoS? I’d go for that, same healers mechanics, but for nameplates. No LoS, no names.

Yeah, this is a big issue, I hate it when ranged players stand in their spawn shooting and hitting constantly, the nameplate does really need a nerf. If I as melee can’t see ranged players nameplate, they definitely shouldn’t see mine. You shouldn’t be able to camp and shoot people almost another outpost in distance away.

This is a good idea. Reducing the nameplate range to 50m would deny Muskets the ability to aim at the bottom of the nameplate for headshots.

i think hiding the nameplate if the character model isn’t in your field of view and removing the diamond from the design, or maybe centering the health bar would do

So now we’re down to nerfing nameplates :joy: I can’t with pvpers nowadays

This isn’t really a bad concept… Line of sight is legit, and you should be able to duck and hide. This increases the pursuit. At least over a certain range amount. Maybe 50% of the view angle.

I like the idea, being able to track because you hit when you’re wicked far away is detrimental to anyone non-ranged.

Markers should only be on characters when they’re moused over imo

I propose simple solution. If you are aiming with ranged weapon like bow or musket, you should not see any nameplates from distance.

This could work too. It would also solve the issue with large scale PVP clumps.

bump for visibility

It is already like this. The only name plates I can see when at range are the ones I am shooting at, and it quickly disappears.

Contrary to what people think, its not easy to hit specific enemies at range. This is in part why I suggest so many are using cheats. How they know how to pick out the low health targets to rack up mortal empowerment is beyond me. Name plates do not randomly show, health bars do not randomly show and my nameplates are set to 50.
