I’m an East coast player on a west server (El Dorado) I played through all the Alphas of NW, even on west servers to check latency and I never had big issues.
My ping on day 1-2 were 100ms regularly and 120ms when it was “bad”. Since you guys have added server capacity and maintenance my ping now regularly sits at 117-125ms and spikes up to 180ms.
100ms is playable, 125 is just playable enough, and 180 is not feasible for a good experience.
I know the simple solution here is “bro play on an East coast server” but, The guild I’m with that I’m really enjoying playing with and played the Ashes of Creation Alpha with is over on West. I’d really prefer to not leave them and find a new guild.
Will server stability come back, or will it continue to get worse for East players on West servers as you continue expanding server capacity?
one good solution would be with a high quality VPN an an exit point next to the WEST server location. i’ve had that help a lot if GW2 (they use amazon too) and it cut down on server lag .
Will not make a difference as the information from the servers will still need to reach you in the end. By doing what you said will increase the ping not decrease. You’d adding another stop.
actually it really depends. if hes on the east coast, natural ping/latency is high if he connects directly to US WEST node, thus he may actually get a boost using a gaming or high end VPN that has him doing a LOT less hops in between. OF COURSE it would be best for him to connect to the closest direct end point (US EAST) but if he can’t or does not want to (due to him wanting to play on west but being on east coast) vpn is his only solution.
keep in mind of course the gain is all based on how many hops his ISP routes him through to connect him from his location to the US WEST end point… compared to what a VPN would offer (he may get 1/2 very direct and high end connections within the VPN network as opposed to 4-10 that his ISP would have him do).
