New World Crashing my GPU - EVGA 1080 FTW

Game keeps crashing with black screen, all on low settings at 2k with a 1080ti (not high temperature). Devs need to give us a solution, at least recognize the problem and work on it.

Hey Bewadh, have you tried lowering you power limit/target? Not sure what card you have but if EVGA you can use their precision x1 software or if another brand try MSI Afterburner.

I have found stability at 60% power limit - it will spike up to 75% but I think this was what was causing crashes when it would be at 100% it would spike to 114-115% and trip the OCP.

I also set the clock speed at -400 and such but thermals have not been an issue.

I have a GIGABYTE 1080ti and I was playing at 2560c1600p on window mode.

I lowered the power limit to 80%. I will try to put it on 60%.

Thanks!

I’ve set my 2070 Super to 70% power limit: playable at the default settings applied by nvidia GeForce experience

I’m running a Gigabyte 2060S Gaming OC which was supposed to be a high-end 2060S model. I’ve never had a single problem with this card nor has it ever went above the power limit.

I’ve bought the game yesterday and upon getting to the first town I was hit with a whopping 115% power usage when it’s supposed to be limited by MSI afterburner to 100%. I’ve then reduced it down to 85% power limit, thinking it’ll be alright, only to be hit with a 105% power usage. I’m quite literally afraid of booting the game up.

I’ve also gotten down as low as 80% power limit and still hitting 100%+ power usage…

I am fairly confident I fixed my game freeze issue!!

I purposely waited 24 hours, after plenty of playtime, to make sure I wasn’t crazy and this fix is stable.

Backstory: I played beta in early September and had zero freezing issues on medium settings and an overclocked GTX 1050 Ti. After the game release, I started having these freeze issues that we’ve all been reporting on, especially in menus and the character select screen and noticing what appeared to be a weird power spike. After many many hours of troubleshooting, I could only play by setting MSI Afterburner Power Limit to 70% and on low graphic settings.

NOW, I am running AS EXPECTED with the below fix with everything normal. I am using default settings in MSI Afterburner (power limit at 100%; core and memory clocks at 0%), medium graphic settings, and uncapped FPS (I can only get 40ish fps with my card - but you may still want to cap until you feel it’s safe). PLUS, I am able to have my apps running like GeForce Experience with the overlay and Discord (no overlay as I never use its overlay). Bottom line: this is exactly how I intended to play and I am no longer freezing.

STEPS

  1. Hit start or windows key
  2. Type “cmd”
  3. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open an elevated command prompt
  4. Copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth”
  5. Let it run and complete
  6. Copy and paste “sfc /scannow”
  7. Let it run and complete
  8. Review any messages after it completes and refer to the MS link above to their meaning. For me, it said it found and fixed some corrupt files.
  9. RESTART YOUR COMPUTER!!!
  10. Start New World and try it out
  • Pro-top: be patient and run the game without a bunch of apps or overclocked settings. If it seems stable, introduce one change at a time to see if it’s stable. Then make another change such as changing graphic settings, uncapping FPS, other apps, overclocking your GPU, etc.

I hope this helps!!!

Thanks to Keneth Andres from AGS support for their help.

Side note: he said the devs are aware of the issue and tracking in a document titled, “Crashing general issue within New World - Developers reporting historical issue.” If you decide to contact live support, you may want to refer to this document.

This fix worked for me! Thank you

It is certainly poor design. it is not due to anything related to graphics details within the game. The game most often just kills the GPU in the main screen showing the logo. I agree with defsdoor it seems to be poorly designed.

I’ve sent my card back to the supplier - I’m hoping they swap it.

In the meantime I’m trying on my old GTX - and it’s even more apparent that, even if the problem is poor cards, it’s the software doing daft things that triggers it.

The PSU/Caps squeal on this card/PSU combination too (I have 1000W PSU) and at all the points where my 3090 would crash, the GPU goes from really busy, to bone idle, and then straight back up to really busy.

I reckon its the sudden change is demand that is causing the issue.
I never had any problem in game - only when fast travelling, at the Amazon Games logo, and just before the main continue and character select screens appear.

Glad it worked for you! I hope others see my post since I now have zero issues and even overclocking and running my system as normal. I asked the agent and gave feedback to AGS customer support they should post this asap for players experiencing the freeze issue as a possible fix. If more respond here saying it worked, I’ll make a brand new post on the forums.

This fix worked for me! Thx <3

I’ve had constant crashes a day after the new patch, around every 5-15 minutes, pretty randomly. Never had one before the patch. So I’ve tried all the steps Amazon suggests, didn’t work. I rolled back to the previous nvidia driver, again didn’t work. Then I saw @Cargol 's post about Physx, but instead of reinstalling without it, I just set it to CPU instead of the recommended option.
Worked like a treat, played about 10 hours without a single crash. Didn’t change my GPU’s power limit, no need to cap FPS or lower any settings.
Might not work for everyone but it was an instant fix for me.

Note that I’m still on the previous nvidia driver but I have a feeling it makes no difference, if the problem is with Physx.

I’m playing on a 3070ti and 5800x

So I’ve been having this same exact issue except on an Nvidia RTX 2060 Super Founder’s Edition. I tried everything I could think of and finally decided to swap my GPU to another PCI-e slot and I’ve been running the game for about 40 min with no issues. I even closed and reopened the game a couple of times to see if the crash would trigger again and got nothing.

Now, I’m no expert in computer hardware, but I do wonder if my GPU pulled too much power when launching New World and messed up my PCI-e slot somehow. I’d be very interested in seeing what other people’s experience is after trying this.

My Gainward GTX 970 just died, thanks to New World. Never had any issues, then black screens started in New World (and only in NW, no other Game or Desktop application I had any issues). Tried other drivers and started NW again and got more and a final and permanent backscreen: No more signals from the GTX970. Fans still working but cant get any output. Talked to Amazon NW Support and they said I shall reply my issue in the Forum. Working in Homeoffice with this pc so im forced to get an expensive GPU since GPUs are on peak price right now. The only help from support is the redirect to this thread.

And this will continue to happen because they’ve stopped investigating the issue.

@Lynne This happened to me (been testing NW since 2019) as well. With a very similar card. Also this is a WFM machine. In a way, it’s not the fault of NW. NW is a very new game, and my machine was built to play games from 5 years ago. Still, it sucks.

My machine is a solid device that has NEVER given me any problems. Not even with NW, until LAUNCH day, after waiting in queue for 5 hours, got to play for 2 hours before my GPU kicking the bucket.

The AGS team really needs to put a warning in the Game Requirements page. Just because you CAN run NW does not mean you should.

Please note that my angst about this is not showing in this post, and I am in more or less the same boat as you, but had been intending to buy a NEW PC this fall. Now, not sure because of the price for GPU’s. I’m currently awaiting a similar GPU to my last one from a friend who had one in box never used. If I do not think I can secure it against the same thing happening, for a game I paid for and was led to believe I could play…well, we shall see.

You know what is interesting? I play the game with a 60 FPS Cap, and vsync at 60 Hz on an RTX 3080.

Today I decided to play with the power limit, to see what effect it would have on game performance.

I was able to drop the power limit down to 55%, and save 80 Watts of GPU power consumption, while still running at a steady 60 FPS.

Why is the game wasting 80 Watts of GPU power and stressing out my card, when it can obtain the same 60 FPS with 80 Watts less?

It’s a massive waste of power if it’s doing this with thousands of video cards, without providing anything extra for it in game.

It’s the most bizarre thing I have ever seen, as I was sure the FPS would take a big dive down to 30 FPS or so…

See my post above. I do not have an RTX card. I’m Radeon 6800 and having the exact same issue. I’ve seen many other people with non RTX cards also reporting this same issue.

As of today, 9/10/2021, we have 540 replies from 209 users reporting crashing issues. Over 10+ more GPU’s fried because of New World. Are you still going to sit there and tell me that ALL of us with many different types of GPU’s have defected hardware?! With all evidence pointing to New World being the culprit, Amazon Games is on a very slippery slope headed towards a massive lawsuit, not from us, but from the hardware manufacturers you’ve been costing thousands of dollars for dead cards that needed a RMA.
Manufacturers are warning their customers not to play New World, are you still going to stand by your “it’s safe to play” claim or are we actually going to get a fix sometime this year?!

In this thread alone, between the 209 people who’ve posted issues, depending on what country the game was bought in, that’s between $12,000 to $15,000 you have of our money and we haven’t even had a chance to play the game. There’s no way on Earth I’m going to let AGS take all of our money like that and get away with it. We deserve REAL answers, we deserve the TRUTH but most of all, we deserve a fix so that everyone in this thread are able to play the game they payed for. I’ll push this until my dying breath if I have to, I’ll always fight for what’s right and the way we’re being treated at the moment by being lied to will NOT be tolerated.
