New World is dying and I know why

I played New World at launch and loved the game for the most part. Graphics were good, audio was of high quality, and gameplay was a lot of fun. But what made me stop playing New World?

There were several reasons, but my biggest complaint was accessibility to the fun content. The thing that attracted me the most to New World was the Wars and Outpost Rush, but the only wars I was able to participate in was the ones my faction were throwing and outpost rush though be it a lot of fun had 40 minute wait times.
The current rewards from OPR is great but having to constantly server hop (If I could) to a server that had consistent OPR got old quick. I literally cannot play on a server with friends and have consistent OPR at the same time. This as of right now is the sole reason why I can not comeback to New World.

I have suggested this before, but the best solution is to have cross server matchmaking so New World can consolidate PvP players. I heard it is in the works, but until then I can’t bring myself back to new world.

My second reason is how New World inhibits solo players. I am a 35 year old Dad who has a career job. It’s not that I want to play New World alone it is that I don’t want to deal with the politics and the drama of a company. I just want to log on and play how I want whenever I want. I don’t care about what some man child wants me to do for him. Screw that noise.

My suggestion would be a fourth faction that is corrupted. I think adding a fourth faction could give solo players who didn’t want to deal with the politics of the game a chance to participate in the fun content.

First if you are in the fourth faction you can not organize into companies. This will eliminate the kind of politics that all solo players wish to avoid, but give a clear reason why the fourth faction exists while distinguishing it from the other three.

Second the forth faction does not pick their 50 players to attack and defend it should be earned through contribution in completing PvP missions. I say PvP mission and not the pve missions that gain influence. The more influence you generate that hire in rank you are to be picked for war.

Third, no town boards and governors. If the corrupted faction wins a war the territory isn’t owned it is greyed out, like it was on launch and all shops in the town is returned to base level.

I hope these ideas will be considered. New World has become a game for elitist and I think a fourth faction with no companies can give solo players a chance to have fun in wars. Also the cross server matchmaking can not come fast enough.

The initial mass exodus of the game was caused by the gating to expedition content, there is no doubt in my mind and it seems in the ags’s team knows about this (specifically with the people who’s job it is to know these metrics and why people join or leave).

As it stands, because of the mass exodus of people, the remaining population is very likely pvp oriented since it happens to not largely be involved with that part of the game that drove so many away.

Because lots of the remaining population seems to be related to pvp, it would seem to suggest the reasons for the remaining population leaving are things that would generally upset that population. In this case, its very likely things to do with either

  • The economy and ease of access to making gold
  • The Crafting or gear progression system
  • The Stability of the game
  • Balance of the game.

We can cross off the last, because as designers we intentionally design some classes to be broken to encourage equalized class distributions because having equal class distribution often involves people having multiple sets, and because they have multiple sets they need to play more to build and maintain them.

We also learn that not only does it keep them more active, it seems to provide “fresh” experiences with each type of class when they have their “moment in the spotlight” because they are “overtuned” or “op”.

So we can cross balance off the list because its very unlikely the result of people leaving since many AAA games have proven that intentionally (not unintentionally which is what we have here) buffing classes is good for the game; Meaning, that op classes and undertuned classes is not destructive or has any massive impact on retention rates. There are exceptions to this which we will talk about now.

We can use the forums to get an idea of what the major problems are with the game. The complaints reflect the players opinions about the situation. In this case, we see that the majority of complaints on the forums are not related to economy or ease of access to gold making. generally speaking that is what crafters complain about.

This means our problem is likely in the realm of stability. content access is something that does cause people to leave, but they also come back because of that and we have not seen an uptick in the games population since launch, so its likely they are not leaving because they are bored, but because they are frustrated this provides a vital hint at why people are leaving.

So we are down to stability at being the most likely cause, but it can be said that there are probably some minor issues that are contributing to it (like ice shower and grav well) which are causing not only stability issues but also frustration at not having counter-play options.

This seems to suggest that after the stability issues are resolved, and the balance is done to IS/GW we will see an uptick in population or at the minium a reduction in the loss rate of players.

I also want to comment that there is another option and that is people just cant find places to fit in. This is undoubtedly having impact on the game in some way and because its a subtle thing its very hard to measure it and the only real solid way to tell if the low population caps are causing loss is to add it to the “why did you uninstall” list and pull that data that way.

Lastly,

I want to say that population of new world is around 30k at the moment. This is where eve has been for over a decade. Its enough to sustain the game for a while, but we cant keep losing 10k people a month.

We need an influx of new players. Ags really needs to make the game free for a weeked, week, or month to add more blood into the game.

I think when we boil it down, it is the accessibility to the things that we each want to do and the gameplay loop at endgame. PvPers are not hard to please as long as the game is balanced and stable like you said. However the vast majority of players are dungeon divers and life skillers. So why did they leave?

To be honest the pve content is small, easy, and unappealing. Mutators is a cheap way to recycle content. The difficulty of the expedition is a joke once you figure out the boss mechanics. And the lifeskillers can not make money due to low population servers and limited nodes for resources in high population servers. Also, last I played, there were insane price gouging that killed the economy on my server. I think the best way to fix that is to increase the amount of ways to make gold. For example dungeons and PvP modes should give more gold to players who wish to play the content. That way we free up the resource nodes for lifeskillers who enjoy that content.

I did say I wouldn’t return till they added cross server matchmaking, but I’ve decided to give it another shot after reading the recent patch notes. By allowing players to join OPR from anywhere in the game, it might increase the flow of players into OPR. If that is true, if I can consistently log in and play outpost rush, I will officially comeback for the long term.

OPR needs to be something you can queue up for from the menu (not a NPC) and be searching cross realm to gather players for a match.

Orbs, without any doubt this is the cause.

I want to say this as a blizzard systems designer, one whos job it was to create these systems.

These multiguild, lfg, lfr, orb, cross server systems are horrible for games. If your issue personally is the lack of constant queues for pvp, then we have other solutionts to that. an example of that would be higher population caps on a server, which just so happens to help the servers be healthier.

Cross server matching invalidates server based player skill ranks. This helps drown out good players and their recognition on a server. Its destructive to the social aspects of the game and the accomplishments of players.

There are a lot of solutions which should be done anyways that help queue rates. Examples of that are:

  • Reductions in the player count required for opr from 20v20 to 10v10 or 15v15.
  • Reductions in the max timer for an opr
  • increasing the capture and point generations rates on opr.

any of these will yield much faster times. For example, a reduction to 10v10 would double the queue rate. A massive boost to queue speed.

for me they nerfed things to much and game doesnt feel fun anymore, also latest patch messed desync even more than it was so its even harder to land shots! Everything got nerfed but dexterity is untouched in result you see outside WW duelers running dex builds most of them! Finally fix desync and balance ur game or else i quit also, i am getting tired of this

When I see people posting, LFM OPR, I don’t (and usually won’t) drop what I’m doing to run to a NPC to queue up. Let me do it wherever I’m at, enter, do BG then when done put me right back where you took me from, it’s in most games nowadays for a reason.

Talk about melodramatic lol
What is this the first iteration of the WoW PVP system?!

Not finding or taking forever to find a match is more destructive wouldn’t you think?

This is a change in todays patch notes, you’ll be able to do that already
