I’ve been playing MMOs as long as they’ve existed as a category and I’d have to agree with you and the OP.
It’s sufficiently different to not feel like, “yeah, been here, done this” but has enough familiarity in mechanics to feel like home.
I have my issues with the game but to the OP’s point, this IS the best MMO to release since WoW and if you weren’t around when that launched, New World has been a picnic compared to that launch.
Many have tried to be the next WoW and perhaps nothing ever will be because the landscape has changed and the conditions may never be the same to make an apples to apples comparison but I’ll be around a while longer to see what happens.
Yeah and of those listed many I’d say are better (or let’s be more accurate here WERE better in their heyday) than New World as a whole complete MMORPG experience.
Bless, Albion, MapleStory, Wildstar, Defiance, Neverwinter, Tera…yes I’ll take New World over those, they were not good IMO.
Again anything that’s browser based in the list…meh right off the bat.
WoW Classic, your are pulling a technical…that game is from 2004 and in 2004 it was beast of MMORPGs and WoW in general ruled until I think Wrath, though I did think Legion was pretty good as well, as of late – I can’t argue on WoW’s behalf the game is a shell of its former 17 year old self.
ESO FANTASTIC from a story perspective, I haven’t played the latest expansion though, but yeah pretty nice story experience.
SWTOR fantastic leveling BLOWS away the grind of New World leveling hands down.
Guiild Wars 2 , I died a lot in that game, but its quality.
Rift, another cool one the Rift concept very nice, but Rift kind of had a touch of New World-itis for me in the early days I felt “ok now what do I do?”
New World is definitely the best MMO I have ever played. This does not make them immune to highly warranted criticism.
A game being infested with bugs and a game being a fantastic game aren’t always mutually exclusive.
This game has issues that people aren’t (and shouldn’t be) willing to overlook. Little bugs here and there can be expected, but countless game-breaking bugs, economy breaking bugs, econ halting, etc… is a massive issue that needs to be addressed by both the community and the developers.
I will continue to play this game because it is the most fun MMORPG I have played since early WoW, but that doesn’t automatically forgive developmental oversight.
Funilly enough, the bugs NW have is not a concern of mine at all. I am used to dealing with bugs and even exploits in a game. Despite the exaggerated threads being posted about them destroying the game, they are of little consequence. They will be fixed.
My issue is the fundamental designs of the game which currently consist of lots of big grinds without any challenge involved in them to disguise it. MMOs are timesinks by design, but NW’s design fails to make them fun, simply inconvenient (which helpfully opens the door to lots of store items that can be considered Convenience instead of P2W).
I am enjoying myself well enough now, but I don’t see much longevity in the game and so currently don’t really see it as an MMO but simply a game to enjoy in passing.
ESO pvp was very good, just not if you´re very bad and dont even understand whats happening.
they did make it worse with every patch in the last few years tho.
